Spectacle is a TV show you can find on cable or Netflix. It is an Elton John production featuring Elvis Costello as the interviewer. Elvis Costello introduced Smokey Robinson with a musical number. Then he said something that I thought was a great and succinct summation about meeting Smokey Robinson: "If Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Groucho Marx came out and sat down, I could not [be more pleased and impressed.]" If found it fascinating that Smokey showed up with a necklace and a Christian cross displayed prominently. I don't know anything about Smokey's faith or practice, but this little...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Secretary of State Kevin Shelley's expected appearance before an obscure legislative committee next week presents a rare spectacle in a state Capitol where few statewide elected officials have ever found themselves so engulfed in controversy. While many lawmakers have endured scandals and some seen the insides of prison walls, Shelley has few precedents as he prepares to testify before a committee that has traditionally concerned itself with auditing humdrum issues such as grazing fees and Medi-Cal overpayments. Though the 14-member Joint Legislative Audit Committee is also making headlines with its probe of cost overruns on the Bay...

Look out for rare space spectacle June 06 2004 at 04:12PM Hamburg - Tuesday's transit of Venus in front of the sun will be only the sixth such event observed by humans, and astronomers say nobody alive today has seen the phenomenon, which is barely noticeable because it only imperceptibly reduces visible sunlight. Past transits in 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874 and 1882 were monitored from Earth. Slight differences in the start and finish time were used to roughly calculate the distance of the sun from the Earth. The transit will be visible from all parts of Earth where the sun...

<p>The title of the "briefing and discussion" that was to be staged last Thursday in a wing of the U.S. Capitol in Washington was intriguing to anyone who has been following California's historic recall election.</p> <p>"American Democracy's Uncertain Future -- And Is California an Unsettling Vision of Our Democratic Destiny" implied that learned, serious people were to look beyond the hoopla surrounding the recall and seek the deeper meaning of what was occurring in the state.</p>
