Springfield and its surrounding cities and towns lost a collective 5,600 jobs in July, a further sign of a stalling economy. “It’s a continuous story. There is just too little demand for goods and services,” said Karl J. Petrick, an assistant professor of economics at Western New England University. “Probably the best we can hope for is slow growth. The best we can hope for is to just narrowly avoid sliding back into recession.” Springfield’s unemployment rate rose last month to 12.5 percent from 12 percent recorded in June, according to the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development...

The report by the Food Research and Action Center, based in Washington, D.C., ranks the Springfield metropolitan area as having the 37th highest “food hardship” rate among the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the country. The rankings are based on data gathered in 2009 and 2010 as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index project, the center reported. “The food hardship rates in Springfield for households with or without children are unconscionable,” said Andrew Morehouse, executive director of The Food...

He didn’t have to know you very well. He was that kind of guy.” Similar sentiments were expressed by those who knew him at...

The ranking of the top 25 most dangerous cities was compiled by Business Insider using numbers from the FBI’s most recent Uniform Crime Report data based on 2010 crime statistics. Springfield, with a population of 154,314, warrants inclusion on the list because it has a violent crime rate of 1,354 incidents for every 100,000 people. That is a higher per-capita rate than Boston at 903, Lowell at 1,155, and...
