There is little doubt that America has become a culture of death. Two of the most dangerous places to be are so-called women’s clinics and nursing homes. We do not value life that is not at its prime. So maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that a doctor was killing babies with scissors. Maybe we should be surprised he’s actually been arrested for it. On Wednesday an abortion doctor in West Philadelphia was charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors. Dr. Kermit Gosnell has...

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - An Amsterdam barber has been arrested for stabbing a client with scissors, the second such incident involving the barber, Dutch police said on Saturday. The client was stabbed and seriously wounded after a fight broke out earlier this week at the barber's shop, police said. The barber stabbed another client with scissors in 2000. The summer I turned 6 years old, some of the neighborhood boys started bullying me. Back then, I owned a pair of cabbage patch kid roller-skates and my favorite activity was skating around the block singing nursery rhymes at the top of my lungs. One day, a few boys in the 8-10 range thought it would be pretty humorous to push me around and watch me flail. I tried to run from them, but I couldn’t skate faster than they could run. They taunted me for a while and then knocked me down. Angry, humiliated, and with two freshly skinned...

Serious knife injuries are increasing, say trauma experts at the Royal London Hospital in a letter to this week's BMJ. Several recent deaths have fuelled the perception that forensic knife injuries have become an epidemic, resulting in a knife amnesty and government discussion of new punitive measures, write Charles Knowles and colleagues. An increase in such injuries is supported by data from regional police forces and the Home Office, with 1200 reported attacks in London last year and 30% of homicides caused by knife injury. Crimes defined as "more serious wounding or other act endangering life" almost doubled nationally from...

Health officials are worried that a sharp object used to stab about 20 students at a school dance could have transmitted the hepatitis C virus. One boy who was stuck at the Warren Hills Regional Middle School in Washington on Feb. 11 has tested positive in an initial screening for the virus, and more tests are pending to confirm the result, Warren County health officer John Hawk said. Officials do not believe the boy got the virus from being stabbed at the Valentine's Day dance. "But the problem is, whoever attacked this student stuck other people. So others could have...

It appears the Brits have climbed the Cliffs of Insanity and taken a collective nosedive into the River of Outright Absurdity. My friend, author Michael Z. Williamson, and I used to laugh about Britain, their unreasonable ban on armed self defense and their hysterical attempts to further correct the problems caused by said ban by implementing yet more stringent and bizarre restraints on people's rights. Mike was born in the UK. I used to kid him about the future of Great Britain. I used to tell him that soon, sharp implements will be banned, and people will be forced to...

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- An appeals court has granted a new trial to a man convicted of stabbing a potbellied pig, then blurting out in drunkenness that he wanted pork chops. Edwin "Louie" Deason, 45, was convicted of two counts of felony cruelty to animals in March 2003. His attorney had argued that a neighbor, Bob "Big Bob" Wehrheim, was the one who plunged a rusty knife into the pig, severing a main nerve and forcing county Animal Care and Control workers to euthanize the 50-pound animal. The 4th District Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday that the "trial court...

EDMONTON -- Corrections Canada won't let guards at maximum-security prisons wear stab-proof vests because it sends a confrontational "signal" to prisoners, says a department spokesman. "If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause. "It interferes with what we call 'dynamic security.' We want staff to talk to prisoners, to see how they're doing." At Stony Mountain Institution only guards in the emergency response unit are allowed to wear the stab-proof vests, said unit manager Linda Garwood-Filbert. The...
