In an interview with Germany’s Der Spiegel NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen had the following stunning exchange: “Rasmussen: The honest answer is that there is no military solution to this conflict. We need a political solution, and it’s up to the Libyan people to come up with one. We can only call upon the leadership in Tripoli to put an end to its acts of violence, to grant the people their legitimate rights and to permit a peaceful transition to democracy. SPIEGEL: What happens if Gadhafi doesn’t comply with these demands? Wouldn’t NATO at least have

A fresh Gallup Poll released this morning reveals that somehow 13% of Americans still approve of the job being done by Congress. The new Gallup survey did not identify those people, understandably. However, even though it is a surprisingly high number given the work not done there in recent years, the 13% is a record low job approval for Congress since Gallup began compiling such data in 1974. The same Dec. 10-12 survey finds a record high 83% of Americans disapprove of the job being done by the folks on Capitol Hill, also the worst

Ever since the shellacking Democrats suffered in the midterms, their strategists and donors have been meeting to discuss plans for 2012. Tuesday, the New York Times reported on the latest high profile effort by David Brock, head of Media Matters: David Brock, a prominent Democratic political operative, says he has amassed $4 million in pledges over the last few weeks and is moving quickly to hire a staff to set up what he hopes will become a permanent liberal counterweight over the airwaves to the Republican-leaning

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada's economy created six times more jobs than forecast in June, a near-record gain that pressures the central bank to raise interest rates again this month even as cracks in the U.S. recovery threaten to cool the country's scorching growth. The staggering employment gain contradicts a recent string of weaker data, including another report on Friday showing housing starts fell in June. Statistics Canada said on Friday that employment surged by 93,200 in June, flying past market expectations for 15,000 jobs, led by hiring in the retail and wholesale trade sectors, while factories laid off workers. The...

Three weeks after making this speech at the Treasury Department, Frank became Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee. Frank on Democrats taking over regulatory reform:“You will see far less difference with Democrats taking over in the Financial Services regulatory area than in virtually any other area of public policy, because we did work together on things like regulatory relief and we have more to do yet in the deregulation. One of the things we did was...

Under the headline “Stunning Pronouncement,” a new fundraising pitch sent Tuesday by Rep. Tim Walz’s campaign targets statements by one of his Republican opponents, Allen Quist. At a meeting of Wabasha Republicans in December Quist called liberals “radicals” and said the fight against Democrats was bigger than the fight against terrorism. “A stunning comment by one of my opponents has caught some attention,” wrote Walz, referring to national news outlets’ coverage of Quist’s remarks. “The comment is a clear picture into the mindset of those who are doing all they can to stop the change we are fighting for every...

  • A Stunning Demonstration of Why Good Science Needs Good Math

Everyone is scientific circles is abuzz with the big news: there's proof that dark matter exists! The paper from the scientists who made the discovered is here; and a Sean Carroll (no relation) has a very good explanation on his blog, Cosmic Variance. This discovery happens to work as a great example of just why good science needs good math. As I always say, one of the ways to recognize a crackpot theory in physics is by the lack of math. For an example, you can look at the electric universe folks. They have a theory, and they make predictions:...

"I think it's very important for our friends, the Israelis, to have a peaceful Palestinian state living on their border. And it's very important for the Palestinian people to have a peaceful, hopeful future." So spoke President Bush just two days after his re-election, just exactly as news reports were leaking Yasser Arafat's demise. The combination of Mr. Bush's stunning new mandate and Mr. Arafat's near-death condition will lead, I predict, to a quick revival of Palestinian-Israeli diplomacy after months of relative doldrums and to massive dangers to Israel. The doldrums will cease because the Bush administration views Mr. Arafat as the...
