An Upstate man is in custody, accused by the FBI and local law enforcement as being part of a “domestic terrorist group” that broke into and took over a foreclosed home, according to a release by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. The home is listed as being valued at $2,599,000. A realtor checking on the home found a notice, apparently posted by the extremists, saying that they were taking possession of the home. The Sheriff's Office release said, “On April 24, a deputy responded to a report of a burglary at 112 White Violet Way in Sunset. A lock on...

On May 3, 2007, ten aspirants to the Republican presidential nomination kicked off the long campaign with a debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. The candidates disagreed about the issues and their respective qualifications--but each claimed Reagan's mantle. "I think it's important to remember," said Mike Huckabee, "that what Ronald Reagan did was to give us a vision for this country, a morning in America, a city on a hill." John McCain talked about Reagan's fiscal austerity: "Ronald Reagan used to say we spend money like a drunken sailor." Tommy Thompson threw in a stilted...

AN URGENT MESSAGE TO NRA MEMBERS: ONE MORE PUSH TO END THE CLINTON GUN BAN With only five days to go before the September 13th expiration of the 1994 Clinton gun ban, anti-gun activists across the nation are making a last stand to re-enact this ineffective legislation. But now time is running out. Congress is only in session three more days before the sunset, and because time is short, anti-gunners will be redoubling their efforts to extend the ban. Originally enacted in 1994, the Clinton crime bill banned gun ownership by law-abiding citizens as the solution to violent crime. But...

The so-called assault-weapons ban is about to sunset. About time. It was one of the goofiest gun laws on the books. It outlawed guns because they look mean — the perfect law for a superficial world. The assault-weapons ban was racial profiling for guns. Before we start, you should know I used to be like you when it came to firearms. I had a religious-like hatred of guns. In fact, I was a member of the anti-gun organization Handgun Control Inc. WASHINGTON, July 23 - During his campaign for the presidency in 2000, George W. Bush took a dramatic step: a vow to support the ban on assault weapons, enacted in 1994 for a 10-year period. "It makes no sense for assault weapons to be around our society," Mr. Bush declared. Since then, the president's advisers have repeatedly affirmed his support for the ban, a position that has helped him appeal to moderate voters and demonstrate independence from the powerful gun lobby. But in the middle of a presidential election year, and with only five working days left in Congress before...

This was an invitational event, I was still surprised and disappointed that it was not better attended. So, now that the post-election dust has settled, how are things looking for us in the House, Senate, and White House? Let's start with the President. WHITE HOUSE Though President Bush did voice support for the "current ban" during his campaign, he appears to be backing away from this stance now. During recent Senate testimony, Attorney General John Ashcroft would not give a firm answer to the relentless ban renewal questioning from Sens. House OKs GOP Measure on Estate Tax WASHINGTON- The Republican-controlled House voted Thursday to permanently repeal the estate tax, turning aside a Democratic effort to retain the tax but limit its impact to a few thousand of the very wealthy. The GOP bill, passed on a bipartisan 256-171 vote, would remove the Jan. 1, 2011, expiration or "sunset" date that blocks permanent repeal under current law. The entire 10-year, $1.35 trillion tax cut enacted one year ago this week - including repeal of the estate tax - will disappear in 2011 because of an arcane Senate budget rule. Senate Democrats...
