Western PA Dem leader confirms Matthews inquisitive

The chair of the Allegheny County Dems, Jim Burn, has confirmed that “Hardballer” Chris Matthews has kept in touch with him about where things stand in "the west” since the weeks leading up to the Pennsylvania primary. “Chris was very inquisitive about the dynamic here in the west,” said Burn, “but equally as coy regarding whether or not he would actually run for the U.S. Senate.” Burn said before this year's primary that he and Matthews mostly discussed the presidential race between Senators Clinton and Obama. “In fact,

Are Rendell, Casey sure things?

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - The harder U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum campaigns, the more voters dislike him, a new Franklin & Marshall College poll suggests. The two-term Republican has fallen farther behind Democrat Bob Casey Jr. in the race for U.S. Senate as voters grow more concerned about the war in Iraq and less comfortable with his often combative style. “There’s been a huge shift away from a fairly tight race to a demonstrable — if not insurmountable — lead for Casey,” said G. Terry Madonna, the director of Franklin & Marshall College’s Center for Politics and Public Affairs. Casey has...

Lynn Swann:With star power and storied life of successes he makes first electoral bid (BIO INFO)

SLATINGTON, Pa. - Even a cinder-block fire hall, a sparse crowd, and bad lighting can't diminish Lynn Swann's star power. When he enters the Vigilant Fire Company, looking football-fit at 54 and wearing a suit and tie, the few dozen audience members pop out of their fold-up chairs to cheer him. Swann flashes a megawatt smile, grabs a stool at the front of the room, and tells them why he left a comfortable life as a celebrity broadcaster to run for governor of Pennsylvania. "If I didn't think we needed a change, I'd be content to stay at home, do...

30 Reasons To Vote Out Ed Rendell

If you believe the polls and the political insiders, millions of Pennsylvania voters will go to the polls Nov. 7 to re-elect Gov. Ed Rendell. This will mean another four years of rising taxes, runaway state spending and a declining standard of living for Pennsylvanians. Ask yourself if you’re better off today than you were four years ago when Rendell took office. If you’re still considering voting for Rendell, consider the following reasons why Rendell does not deserve re-election: 1) Rendell signed the scandalous July 2005 pay raise bill into law and praised it as "good legislation." That breach of...

RENDELL TO SENIORS ON GAMBLING: LOSE $30 DOLLARS A DAY? OKAY!

After several days of criticism over his insulting and offensive remarks about what "unbelievable brightness and cheer," gambling brings to the, "very gray lives," of seniors, Ed Rendell yesterday sought to, uh, "clarify," his views on the positive role of gambling in their lives. "Congratulations on your clarification, Governor," said Swann Communications Director Leonardo Alcivar. "Pennsylvanians are now comforted by your belief that seniors losing $30 dollars a day is just fine." "The past two weeks of front page headlines on the Governor's abuse of the state plane, and now on his disgraceful views about the lives of our seniors,...

Swann vs. Rendell on the 2nd Amendment

Compare and Contrast: Swann vs. Rendell on the 2nd Amendment Friday, October 13, 2006 For years, Ed Rendell has been a liberal anti-gun politician from Philadelphia, but at the third and final gubernatorial debate, he outdid himself. He basically told gun owners that if he gets a second term, they can expect an all out assualt on their right to bear arms. Just look at what Ed Rendell said: "And for an ordinary citizen, one gun a month means the ordinary citiizen can buy 12 a year. How is that a possible intrusion on the rights of ordinary citizens? We...

The firewall strategy Posted by Brett Lieberman /The Patriot-News October 13, 2006 08:11 Pennsyltucky Politics Index Print | Email National Republicans remain hopeful that Rick Santorum can turn the election around, but they're not opening their checkbooks to help him out. Instead, they're focusing on a firewall strategy to save more competitive seats in Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee and some would say Virginia. The Washington Post writes about the broader GOP fallback strategy, which includes pulling airtime reserved in areas that favor Democrats in order to protect vulnerable Republicans.
Swann Battles Ed Rendell's "Politics as Ususal"

Today, Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann highlighted the urgent need to end pay raise politics in Pennsylvania during his statewide tour to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Scranton, Erie, Johnstown, and Pittsburgh. “The Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Ed Rendell’s midnight pay raise is just another example of what is wrong with Harrisburg,” said Swann. “The politics of pay raises and backroom deals are getting in the way of delivering results for hard working Pennsylvanians. This Governor squandered his bully pulpit by doing more to raise the pay of Harrisburg insiders than providing tax relief for the rest of us,” Swann continued....

HARRISBURG - In a decision that is renewing public anger, the state Supreme Court yesterday ruled that the legislature violated the state constitution by allowing lawmakers to take midterm pay raises last year. But the court stopped short of requiring House and Senate members who accepted the extra money to reimburse the state, ruling that they "acted in good faith" that the law was constitutional. Separately, the court reinstated the raises for 1,000 members of the state judiciary - including its own - that ended when the legislature repealed the pay hikes amid an outpouring of public outrage in November....

Swann vs. Rendell’s Harrisburg

PITTSBURGH—In his new book, A New Direction: My Plan for a Better Pennsylvania, Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann outlined his plan to increase job creation across Pennsylvania and stop Ed Rendell’s Harrisburg from hindering economic growth. The current administration’s burdensome business taxes cost Pennsylvania over 33,000 new jobs in 2004 alone. And in the Northeastern part of the state, manufacturing jobs dropped approximately 40 percent in Lackawanna County since 2000, 29 percent in the city of Scranton, and 15 percent in Luzerne County, according to newly released 2005 census data.
To whom does race matter?

Does race really matter in American politics? And if so, to whom? For some time there has been a disconnect between the party that wins most of the black votes (the Democrats) and the party that promotes black individuals into powerful positions (the Republicans). Who are the most influential African Americans today? Clarence Thomas and Condoleeza Rice are the first names that spring to mind. Of course, that is partly because there is currently a Republican administration. But, in eight years, did Bill Clinton make cabinet appointments of the stature of Rice or Colin Powell? Where are the next generation...
