  • Sen Tom Harkin: Clint Eastwood 'angry white' nonsense

Clint Eastwood is the “perfect icon” for the GOP, Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin said Tuesday, describing the legendary actor as “an old angry white man spewing incoherent nonsense.” The Des Moines Register reported the 72-year-old Harkin made his comments on the Iowa delegation’s breakfast this morning in Charlotte, N.C. “We’ve got our work cut out for us this week, folks, following the Republican convention,” Harkin told the delegates. “I mean, how are we ever going to match Clint Eastwood? I got to thinking he is the perfect icon for today’s Republican tea party: an old angry white man spewing incoherent...

Wow! We’ll soon cross Sixteen Trillion Dollars in Federal Debt! S-i-x-t-e-e-n T-r-i-l-l-i-o-n D-o-l-l-a-r-s. That’s a lot of vote buying even for Washington. Is this ruin? Have we indentured our children into servitude? Solomon warned borrowers will be slaves to their lenders. Add $120 plus trillion in unfunded forthcoming liabilities and, well, we’re doomed. Yet, as significant as this looks, and sixteen trillion of anything cannot be insignificant, the economic repercussions are the least of America’s worries. We still finance this cheaply. Rates on Treasuries remain low. Moreover, America endures as the world’s preeminent economic engine. Obviously, debt weighs heavily on...

It's nearly impossible to find a subject on which the left and right agree in modern-day America. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm sure that the current Congressional gridlock is driving the centrists and moderates of both parties absolutely nuts. While the gridlock will undoubtedly remain until one party achieves some sort of clear edge in November, I believe that there are a few topics on which many on the left and the right do agree. First and foremost, there's the issue of corporate welfare. Chances are, you don't like corporate welfare. Neither do I. Nobody does, and who would? Big business...

The first season of The Newsroom, HBO's drama about a cable news broadcast that decides to take on the Tea Party, came to a merciful end last week. The show began as a masochistic hourly ritual of pompous harangues, left-wing agitprop, clichéd love triangles, and error-riddled "news" presentations. It got even worse from there. Much of the finale was spent in a hospital ward after news anchor and KeithOlbermann mimic WillMcEvoy, played by JeffDaniels, overdosed on antidepressants. At one point, Will jokes that his nurse is trying to euthanize him. After nine episodes, I think many of us were wishing...

By Mr. Curmudgeon:Are you feeling lucky? Well, are you, punks? Inspired by Clint Eastwood's Republican Convention soliloquy to an empty chair, representing the vacant years of the Obama presidency, many have been inspired to emulate Eastwood by declaring Monday (formally known as Labor Day) "Empty Chair Day."As you may recall, the action hero of such film classics as "Dirty Harry" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales" used an empty chair as a prop to address our failed president. "We own this country," Eastwood said to the chair, "Politicians are employees of ours ... and when somebody does not do the job,...

Just a day after Mitt Romney made the most important speech of his life, the edges of it are slipping away. You can remember some of the themes and Romney's wonderful chin and his big soft eyes. The rest is fading out. But Clint Eastwood, standing before a blank teleprompter, muttering at a chair - that is an image no one is going to forget soon. By 10pm on Thursday night, the 50,000 odd delegates, party members and reporters who had travelled to Florida for the Republican National Convention were tired. There had been 18 hours of speeches over three...

MSNBC's Touré Neblett Reacts to Ryan's Speech: For Women and Minorities, 'Our Rights Do Not Come From God or Nature' Near the end of his Wednesday night speech at the Republican National Convention, vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan told his audience and the nation that "sometimes, even presidents need reminding, that our rights come from nature and God, not from government." American pollsters will tell you that the presidential candidate who is in the lead going into the party conventions usually wins. Four polls last week showed a tiny lead for Barack Obama, two for Mitt Romney and one was level; all seven were well within the margin of error. Another rule is that the Gallup poll taken 100 days before the poll foretells the winner. Only once in the past 60 years – the Bush-Dukakis race of 1988 – did that predictor fail. So, what did Gallup show on the date in question? A dead heat, with both candidates on...

Is the tea party changing the Republican Party from the inside -- or selling out to the GOP? As Republicans prepare to officially roll out Mitt Romney as their party's presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention this week, major tea party groups and figures have descended on Tampa, Florida, to schmooze with party bigwigs and rally for Romney. But Romney's conservative credentials have long been viewed with suspicion by the movement. So it came as a surprise when, before at least one event, tea party organizers committed what some activists would consider heresy: seeking approval from establishment Republicans to...

Our military planners are openly discussing how to kill "Tea Party extremists" who have taken over a small town in the USA. Is this "operational lay-down" merely a "cartoonish and needlessly provocative scenario," as described by The Washington Times, or is it something much more malevolent? The military scenario appears in the July 25, 2012 issue of the respected Small Wars Journal and posits that, while Obama will be thrown out of office in 2012, ten years of race- and immigrant-bashing by "right-wing demagogues" will have whipped white Americans into gang-like attacks on non-whites. • Why Ryan is the new Palin (Flawed premise warning)

VP candidates who outshine their bosses cause problems After the traumatic experience with the choice of Sarah Palin as the Republican vice-presidential candidate in 2008, Mitt Romney wanted to appoint a running mate who would not embarrass his campaign as Palin embarrassed John McCain. Though Paul Ryan is a much more experienced, able and better prepared politician than Palin, their nominations share one negative externality for their respective running-mates. Ryan has become the central figure in the Republican camp just as Palin eclipsed McCain. Vice-presidents occupy one of the best known and least influential positions in American politics. They are...

The nation's largest tea party political action committee, the Tea Party Express, is calling on Rep. Todd Akin to step down as Missouri's Republican nominee for a Senate seat on Monday following controversial comments the congressman made about rape. Answering a question about whether he thought abortion should be legal in cases of rape, Akin said in an interview Sunday that in instances of "legitimate rape" the female body has ways of stopping a potential pregnancy. Video of the interview was posted online by the liberal super PAC American Bridge. Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer said in a statement...

About a year ago I called Occupy Wall Street a “tea party with brains.” Today, I’m the one who needs his head examined. Occupy Wall Street, the movement critical of banks, the super rich and their influence in our politics and daily lives, has failed to live up to its promise as an important social and political force. Though its core message — that big finance and greed undermines society and corrupts our political system — is fundamentally correct, Occupy hasn’t lived up to the standard set by the tea party in its ability to turn grievance into a political...

Are you ready to make a difference this Election Day? This Presidential Election is the most important in our lifetime. For conservative states like Texas and Tennessee, our work is complete in our own states. We won the US Senate race and many state legislative and down-ballot county races. Now, for November, the majority of races in Texas don’t have competitive or serious Democratic challengers in the General Election. We’ve worked hard and experienced many victories. So what do activists do now? How do we utilize our passion and experience to impact votes in the November General Election? Answer:...

It's a big step toward getting the Koch brothers' hand-picked star close to the presidency. When U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney tapped Paul Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman, to be his running mate, progressives went on a happy-thon. That Romney chose the House Budget Committee chairman known as the architect of draconian budgets that would make huge cuts in every aspect of the safety net -- not to mention his quest to turn Medicare into a voucher program -- just seemed like a major blunder. Many were gleeful and shocked that Romney would seemingly play right into the Obama...
  • Pat Buchanan explains why Democrats abandon civility more than Republicans

During Sean Hannity’s radio show Thursday, he and commentator Pat Buchanan discussed the hostility they have both experienced from liberals during past Democratic National Conventions. And Buchanan concluded that some activists on the left are so vicious about politics because politics is all they have in their lives. Accusations about a lack of civility are nothing new, and they are often flung back and forth between the left and the right. But Buchanan, the author of “Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?” sees a distinct difference between how the two sides handle it. ...more (w/audio)...

Ample rebuttal has been served against President Obama’s “You didn’t build that!” claim. Obama retreated, but then recently insinuated “Romney-Hood” will help the rich rob the poor via tax breaks and describes Paul Ryan’s budget proposal as “thinly veiled Social-Darwinism.” As absurd as these ideas sound, crowds cheered. We’re not witnessing rival visions offering different paths to similar ends. The gulf extends beyond whether borrowing and spending better ushers prosperity as opposed to saving and producing; aggregate demand maintenance versus supply-side economics. It’s deeper. A widening political divide besets America. The sides not only propose competing, even contradictory methods, Left...

I've been told that we must accept the liberal progressive abortion/homosexual pushing Republican Mitt Romney because we can do no better, that politics is the art of the possible. Respectfully, I place my faith in God, not politics. With God ALL things are possible. They say the man who for thirty or more years of his adult life advocated for abortion and homosexual rights and every other leftist cause that came down the pike is suddenly pro-life (and, according to Romney's recent lies, he's ALWAYS been pro-life). Well, if Romney is serious about the fight for life, he should be...
