A Queens party advertised on Facebook and Twitter as "Drama Free" turned into a shooting gallery early Saturday. Eleven young people were shot, including a teenage girl left paralyzed, when a gunman opened fire into the crowd. About 100 people were packed into the backyard of the single-family home on Inwood St. in South Jamaica shortly before 1 a.m., when the shooter sneaked up a back alleyway and opened fire into the yard through a chain link fence. Police said six males ages 15 to 23, and five women, ages 15 to 21, were shot, with bullets hitting them in...

A New Jersey first grade teacher who wrote that she was a "warden for future criminals" on Facebook says she was speaking "out of frustration to their behavior." Jennifer O'Brien defended herself Wednesday at an administration hearing that will determine whether the tenured Paterson teacher should lose her job. O'Brien told an administrative law judge she wrote the post in exasperation because six or seven unruly first-graders kept disrupting her lessons. She said one boy had recently hit her. The teacher posted her remark to 333 friends on March 28. However, it was forwarded and led critics to call her...

MANDEVILLE, La. - St. Tammany Parish deputies have arrested three 15-year-olds on charges of conspiracy to commit terrorism after they say they thwarted a plan for a possible attack on Lakeshore High school Monday. Deputies said the alleged attack was to include shootings that would have coincided with the start of classes on Monday. Deputies became aware of the plan on July 17th, when school officials notified the Sheriff’s Office of the existence of a group, called “Day Zero,” members of which were all students at the school. Sheriff Strain credited school officials for helping to avert a potentially deadly...

While Colorado’s soft on marijuana laws, were welcomed by adults-first libertarians, so-called unexpected costs are being felt. “The dark side of the issue, however, is the unintended consequences on Colorado’s young people,” reports Our Colorado News. “Since the state legalized marijuana for medical use, treatment centers are treating more teens for marijuana addiction, according to a report from Thomas Crowley, director of the Division of Substance Dependence at the University of Colorado.” The consequences are alarming: “Denver Health Medical Center reports that treatment referrals have tripled, with 83 percent of the teens that smoke marijuana daily saying they obtained it...

How did we reach the point where the only group whose feelings need to be consulted are minorities? Liberalism. Part of liberalism is the notion that minorities need special help, attention, and heightened sensitivity. Along with that, liberalism promotes white guilt and the peculiar desire to "help people" at any cost. The result is that the media gives credence and coverage to mere feelings when real people are being attacked. Of course, the worse the violence gets, the more sensitive we'll have to be. The flash mobs and mob attacks will require the utmost sensitivity from us, as they are...

How about people who took up toking later in life? The same research showed they were much less likely to have such difficulties. For the research, scientists at the Federal University of Sao Paulo in Brazil used a stardard "card sorting" task to evaluate the cognitive ability of 104 long-term cannabis users, including 49 who had started using before age 15. Most people say that a job is good for making money. So, if you don't need money, what's the point? The fabled English aristocratic class of the late 19th and early 20th century apparently thought that way, if the caricatures painted by Jeeves and Wooster, Brideshead, and the like have any truth to them. Their main job was getting dressed and undressed. It seems like young Americans are thinking the same way. When most women are expecting their fourth child, they don’t decide to start taking in foster children. But that’s what Michele Bachmann did. For six years, from 1992 to 1998, she opened her home to a total of 23 teenage girls who needed a family. She juggled raising up to nine kids at a time, homeschooling her grade-school-age and younger biological children during the day and bonding with her high-school-age foster children at night. Children including teens (yes even your children and grandchildren) have almost certainly been exposed to pornography. A predator has already approached many. The lure, if not cash, is usually alcohol or some other drug, occasionally cigarettes for the very young. Statistics are spotty as most children, even older teens, whether they take the bait or not, do not tell anyone in authority. Do not help these pigs. There are clear statistics that the earlier a child is exposed to drugs, the higher the likelihood of trouble. The nonsense that it is somehow responsible to show a child how to drink...

Fewer teens and young adults are having sex, a government survey shows, and theories abound for why they're doing it less. During the eight years I lived in Japan, there occurred a rash of horrific murders committed by young men in their teens. Almost all of these crimes were the acts of lonely outcasts, teens with especially low self-esteem who had been victims of bullying and ostracism their whole lives. They lived uneventful lives until one day, they snapped. Then, all of the resentment they felt came to a head, and they lashed out at peers, parents, or complete strangers, often committing multiple murders with such weapons as kitchen knives, baseball bats, or samurai swords. Some nights, Adams slept at Stafford's house. Now the teens, both 17, spend their nights in detention cells, facing murder charges for killing each other's brother.

Why do teens and adults self-mutilate? There doesn't seem to be clear cut answers. Some tie the self-mutilation to abuse and not just to physical abuse but also neglect. Some cutters have said that when they cut they can regain control of their anger. While no one appears to have pat answers to cutting, self-embedding and self-mutilation, no one denies that it is a troubling trend.

An act of teenage male bravado on the part of at least one boy may have led to Sunday’s beating death of an 81-year-old man visiting Lynchburg for his granddaughter’s wedding, police said. Two 16-year-olds and a 13-year-old were arrested Tuesday and charged with the murder of George Leroy Baker III, of Tempe, Ariz. {snip} Though police have said they are prohibited by law from naming juveniles, a search warrant filed in Lynchburg Circuit Court on Tuesday identified Kenneth Davis as the person who ran up to Baker “in an aggressive manner” before witnesses heard what sounded like a blow...

Here's some disturbing news about religious trends among teenagers -- what you might call Teenage Mutant Ninja Christianity. From CNN: If you're the parent of a Christian teenager, Kenda Creasy Dean has this warning: Your child is following a "mutant" form of Christianity, and you may be responsible. Dean says more American teenagers are embracing what she calls "moralistic therapeutic deism." Translation: It's a watered-down faith that portrays God as a "divine therapist" whose chief goal is to boost people's self-esteem. Dean is a minister, a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary and the author of "Almost Christian," a new book...

ST. PETERSBURG — Police say it was shortly after midnight Thursday when the two men climbed over a security fence at the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel. Nearby was the pool. But Michael Cline, 19, and Andrew Harris, 18, weren't there to swim, police say. In fact, their actions forced the hotel to clean and bleach the pool. The two were watched by Vinoy security guards as they befouled the swimming pool with human feces. Guards called police, who found the men in the hot tub. Harris told police he wasn't a guest at the Vinoy and wasn't visiting anyone, but he...

I received this Prayer Request from big'ol_freeper a few minutes ago. I have a Facebook friend who’s daughter was ganged up on and beaten unconscious by another teen girl a couple of days ago. They are a really great family and it is an incredible tragedy. I would ask that through prayer she may heal both physically and emotionally. I would also ask prayers for her mother, who is a single mother putting herself through college to make a better life for herself and her family. I can only imagine the burdens her soul is carrying on behalf of her...

Several factors have aligned to hurt what was once a vibrant and reliable labor market, experts say. In some cases, unemployed older Americans or illegal immigrants have taken the jobs, while an increase in the minimum wage has made it too expensive for some employers to hire teens. Small says that among a group of 25 friends, only one has found consistent work for the summer... In construction and landscaping, illegal immigrants have pushed teens out of jobs, “It’s too expensive for us to hire teens that don’t have experience,” said Karin Devencenzi... also blames the minimum wage. At $8.40...

ALL president Judy Brown. A U.S. government study has found that most teens are virgins, a finding which one pro-life group says has “huge significance” for sex education curricula which assume that teenagers are sexually active. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s June 2010 report is titled “Teenagers in the United States: Sexual Activity, Contraceptive Use, and Childbearing.”It shows that from 2006 to 2008, 58 percent of never-married teen girls and 57 percent of never-married teen boys between the ages of 15 and 19 reported that they had never had sexual intercourse. The numbers were substantially unchanged since a...

Talking with an adolescent can be like walking through a minefield. At any moment you could be asking what you thought was a simple, sincere question only to find it triggering an explosive response. You know that communication keeps you connected to your child, but it often seems to backfire because of the type of questions asked. Research proves our instincts: The number one antidote to risky-kid behavior is a strong relationship with a parent. Believe it or not our kids even like us and want us in their lives! (Really!!!!) A recent Girl Scout of America survey found that...
