The purple colour is down to the potassium perchlorate © WileyIt might seem counterintuitive but one way of making decoy flares for fighter planes better and safer is to make them out of TNT, say European scientists.Decoy flares are pyrotechnic devices shot out of aeroplanes to confuse heat seeking missiles. For the simpler missiles a hot flame will suffice but technology is always improving and advanced missiles now look for the tell tale signatures of water and carbon dioxide to distinguish between a plane and a flare. Yes, there is a right way to blow up an animal carcass This, according to the US Forest Service document entitled "Obliterating Animal Carcasses with Explosives," is the right way. See those rectangles? Those represent sticks of dynamite. Their placement demonstrates how they should be positioned in order to achieve what the document calls "total obliteration." Pro-tip: The diagram up top illustrates how to explode a carcass when it needs to be eliminated quickly and absolutely. Under less urgent circumstances, the explosive placement illustrated below (corresponding to "partial obliteration") should suffice. Pro-tip #2: In some cases, it is probably best...

<p>NEW YORK -- We'll return to our regularly scheduled program right after this brief message. And before we get to that brief message -- well, here's a briefer one.</p> <p>Pop!</p> <p>As an "NYPD Blue" rerun unspools on Court TV, the screen shrinks and shifts. Up from the bottom rises a message: This episode of the famed cop show is brought to you by Planters' nuts, the salty Kraft Foods Inc. snack. As a movie plays on AOL Time Warner Inc. cable-counterpart TNT, a quiz runs across the bottom of the screen, asking viewers a question about the film. It's sponsored by United Parcel Service Inc. Earlier this year, TNT tested a tactic that had a message from an American Express Co. financial-services operation appear -- just as Steve Martin faced a particularly thorny money decision during "Father of the Bride II."</p>

Three days after a made-for-TV movie catapulted him to national fame, Portland's best-known door-to-door salesman, Bill Porter, has found himself knocking on doors at the rate of 80 per second. A nice pace for a 69-year-old man with cerebral palsy who overcame the label "unemployable" to become a top-grossing salesman. This week, following Sunday's premiere of the TV movie "Door to Door," Porter is getting 80 hits a second on his Web site, where he now sells Watkins household products. That's not all. The movie, starring Academy Award nominee William H. Macy as Porter, drew U.S. television's biggest audiences Sunday...

The cofounder of CNN has suggested that AOL Time Warner pulled the wool over the eyes of the public when it reported that its Turner Broadcasting unit is successfully roping in advertisers. On his website http://www.meandted.com/bits.htm, Reese Schonfeld notes that in reality the Turner cable networks' biggest advertiser may be AOL Time Warner itself. Turner Network Television (TNT) and TBS, he says, both showed sizable gains in 2001, with TNT up 189 percent and TBS up 16 percent. But, Schonfeld observes, "More than 30% of all the money spent on TNT and more than 34% of all the money spent...
