Medford, Oregon - There's nothing so special about two gays living together, or two lesbians living together, that should cause Oregon's Legislature to treat them any differently than the members of any other special family unit. If those in non-married, non-traditional relationships, want the same benefits as marrieds, all Oregonians should all be treated the same. Discrimination by any other name is still discrimination. Gays and lesbians in Oregon have claimed that they are a discriminated class of Americans because they are denied the same legal status and the same tax and estate planning benefits as married, heterosexual couples. By...

The Attractiveness of the Tridentine Massby Alfons Cardinal Stickler Cardinal Alfons Stickler, retired prefect of the Vatican Archives and Library, is normally reticent. Not so during his trip to the New York area in May. Speaking at a conference co-sponsored by Fr. John Perricon's ChistiFideles and Howard Walsh's Keep the Faith, the Cardinal scored Catholics within the fold who have undermined the Church—and in the final third of his speech made clear his view that the "Mass of the post-Conciliar liturgical commission" was a betrayal of the Council fathers. The robust 84-year-old Austrian scholar, a Salesian who served as peritus...

Sacramento -- Leaders of a newly formed coalition of faith-based and conservative political organizations said Wednesday they will work to place a constitutional amendment before voters to define marriage as an institution between a man and a woman. The announcement by the group, ProtectMarriage.com, came a day after AB19, a bill to make the state's definition of marriage gender-neutral, cleared the first of two committees it must pass to reach a floor vote in the state Assembly.

Georgia’s legislature, like others around the country, must soon decide how it will respond to pressure from certain segments in our society to broaden the definition of marriage to include homosexual couples. In addition, a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman is before the national legislature. At issue is not just semantics but who will qualify for various legal rights, benefits, and privileges accorded to married people. Emotions on such an issue run high. But it is too important an issue to be decided by popularity polls or perceived political advantage. On...

Conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt made a good observation in recent days. He said that "most of the American media is simply ignorant of the pope's critics on the right," namely those who reject the doctrinal developments and disciplinary reforms of the Second Vatican Council, particularly in regard to ecumenism, inter-religious dialogue and the vernacular Mass. I agree. The media often quotes Catholic liberals when covering events in the Church. Usually, it's done to show that some, or many, Catholics really don't agree with traditional Church teachings on abortion, contraception, euthanasia, homosexual activity and the male-only priesthood. The picture painted is...

Ken Tanner informs me that my attempt last Sunday at blogging in epigrammatic style was not as successful as I hoped, for he has come upon some testimony that the following was found ambiguous by some readers: "As nearly as I can tell, the theological justification for the musical program of the megachurch is that it brings in far more people than it drives away." I shall here try to remedy the defect. The observation arose from meditation on the horrifying visit my wife and I made to the Evangelical church where I grew up, evidently now conducting itself as...

The March on Rome--1971 Editor’s Note: After the abundant coverage of the Pilgrimages to Chartres that has appeared in these columns over the last decade or so, I fear that the significance of the following report—Michael’s first in an American newspaper—may be overlooked. We must recall that when this report was published in June 1971, the New Mass was in its infant stage and the Liturgical Revolution’s destruction had not yet been realized. The Novus Ordo was still avant-garde, and those who opposed it were regularly lampooned as backward-looking Catholics who were utterly “out of sync” with the times. In...

"Expect the worst, and you’ll never be disappointed." Some people, and especially lots of liberal media pundits, seem to live by that philosophy. As I look forward to the New Year I believe that a spirit of optimism and hope is appropriate. I personally prefer great expectations instead of cynical pessimism any day. So here are some good things I’m hoping for in 2005. On the domestic front, I believe that we are going to see the influence of real, true blue conservatives continue to increase as we work overtime to build and strengthen our base nationwide. The fact is,...

The belief that children best learn the truth when they are surrounded by beauty is what, eight years ago, inspired a Congregation of Dominican teaching sisters to accept a 16th century chateau in ruins on the condition that they turn it into a school. In taking on the restoration of the ancient chateau of the lords of Kernabat, in Celtic Brittany, the Dominicans of the Holy Name of Jesus were living the words of Pope St. Pius X, written nearly 100 years before to the superiors of the Congregation. They had written to ask counsel, whether to flee an anti-Catholic...

SCRANTON, Pa. (CNS) -- Bishop Joseph F. Martino of Scranton has decreed the suppression of the Society of St. John, citing its financial instability, its failure to follow church law and the scandal caused by allegations of sexual molestation of minors by two of its founders. The society has caused "grievous financial burdens for the diocese" that could amount to several million dollars, he said. Priests who had left a schismatic traditionalist organization, the Society of St. Pius X, to return to the Catholic Church, established the Society of St. John in 1998. They received canonical authorization for the society...

The Catholic Church, particularly in Brisbane, has been embroiled in an ideological tug-of-war between traditionalists and those who have sought to modernise and liberalise the ancient institution. The Latin Mass is symbolic of the church's traditional base and it's striking a chord with young Catholics as well as old. At 25 years of age, trainee priest Damonn Sypher is learning the Latin rites at his seminary and is convinced it's the future of the Catholic Church. Mr Sypher said having Mass in a language foreign to most contemporary ears was no impediment to its impact on parishioners. "The Mass is...

Faith Factor Proves Key in U.S. ElectionsWednesday, November 03, 2004 By Sam KastensmidtIn an election that recorded the highest rate of voter turnout since the controversial 1968 Presidential election (Richard Nixon vs. Hubert Humphrey), President George W. Bush has been reelected with the highest number of popular votes in U.S. history. Amidst this flood of voters, pollsters have been thoroughly surprised by the number one issue cited by American voters — “moral issues.” The “Values Vote” Drives Results The morning following the election, the Washington Post summed up the Bush victory. “The Bush campaign super-charged the ‘moral minority.’ Exit polls showed...

Until modern times, there existed no form of legitimacy in the Middle East outside of Islam. Rulers ruled in the name of God; assassins struck them down in the name of God. The assassinations of the early caliphs and the struggle between the Sunni rulers and the Assassins in the Middle Ages took precisely this form: each side claimed to act in accord with divine will, revealed in divine texts. Religion played a crucial role in the rationale of assassination, but it also played a crucial role in the rationale of government, law, and warfare—indeed, of everything. This invocation of...

The doctrine of indulgences is, in my experience, one of the most difficult teachings of the Church to understand, and even harder to defend. This is, perhaps, because it exists on a spiritual plane that is so entirely other-worldly, it's hard to wrap our finite minds around it. Add to that the fact that there are no Scripture verses that explicitly refer to indulgences, and that the doctrine of indulgences rests more on Scriptural principles than anything, and you've got one very difficult teaching to grasp. I've read books on the subject, and I've listened to other speakers talk about...

Traditionalist crisis draws cautious Vatican response Vatican, Sep. 13 (CWNews.com) - Responding to a crisis within the schismatic Society of St. Pius X, Vatican officials are declining to make any official statement, but quietly reminding traditionalist priests that they can reconciled with the Holy See. Divisions within the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) in France reached a peak on September 5 when the traditionalist group's leader, Bishop Bernard Fellay, announced the expulsion of two French priests who had criticized the Society's leadership. The expelled clerics-- led by Father Philippe Laguérie, the pastor of a large French traditionalist community-- had...
