  • Dave Says Pick the Right Trustee

Dear Dave, I’m going through a divorce, and I’m about to buy a $600,000 life insurance policy. My 9-year-old daughter would be the beneficiary. I need a trustee, but how do I pick a good one?MarieDear Marie,First, your daughter wouldn’t be the beneficiary. You would leave it in a trust for her benefit. And I’m not sure I’d depend on an ex-husband to handle something that requires this much integrity. You’d be better off hiring a good attorney to execute the trust upon your death, or you can look for a bank that has a trust department.Once you decide on...

Wilmington, Del. - Customer contracts figure prominently in the FBI’s criminal investigation of solar panel maker Solyndra LLC, which went bankrupt despite receipt of more than a half-billion dollars in federal loans, according to testimony on Monday. A top company official testified in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware that the FBI’s search warrant affidavit specifically sought information about company contracts. (Snip) His refusal, government lawyers argued, proved that a trustee should be appointed to take over the company. But U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Mary F. Walrath refused, saying there was no indication of any fraud or mismanagement at the company.

If you have fallen on hard times like my wife and I and you file any type of personal bankruptcy be very careful that your assigned US bankruptcy trustee has disclosed all pertinent information to you. In our case we used a licensed bankruptcy petitioner who gave us incorrect information about our income tax refund which was not filed for 2010 yet. We were told we need not list anything about our 2010 income taxes since we had not filed yet nor had any w-2s etc. Our bankruptcy case was filed august 2010 and was discharged in dec 2010. In...
  • Trustee's speech to kids turns into sex talk

HITCHCOCK — What was supposed to be a motivation speech to a collection of sixth- through eighth-grade girls at Crosby Middle School instead turned into an explicit sex talk, including descriptions on how to perform oral and anal sex, Hitchcock school officials said. The motivational speaker turned out to be a Hitchcock school board member, Shirley Price. Hitchcock Superintendent Mike Bergman said the Jan. 15 pep talk was supposed to be a motivational speech. Price, who was born with physical handicaps, still managed to earn a doctoral degree and also won a seat on the school board. Bergman said when...
  • Mayo Trustee Daschle in Health Reform Negotiation

Look who's at the health care negotiating table -- Tom Daschle. The former Senate Democratic leader's nomination as health and human services secretary was derailed over a back taxes flap earlier this year. But that's not stopping Daschle, a close ally of President Barack Obama, from playing a significant role in Capitol Hill health care talks -- much as he'd be doing if he'd actually gotten the job. The outsized role is unusual for someone who's an adviser to lobbying firms, especially given Obama's campaign vow to change business as usual in Washington. Daschle was in a strategy meeting earlier...

Extreme Financial Crises in the State of Nevada! In a time of extreme financial crisis in the State of Nevada those most critical of the Governor and other elected officials fail to be looking in those areas most responsible for wasteful spending. The first person that comes to mind is Jim Rodgers. Rodgers continually asks for more money for education, but when was the last time he asked one of his reporters to investigate the Clark County School District and the rampant wasteful spending? In what appears to be a case of “school board gone wild”, the school district keeps...

MORGANTON, N.C. -- A 67-year-old Burke County man is accused of molesting a 5-year-old girl. Russell Junior Hartman was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. Hartman is a trustee at First Advent Christian Church in Morganton. Deputies said he was also very active in the church’s youth group. Deputies said the girl he is accused of molesting was not a church member. The victim told officers Hartman molested her several times. Hartman was brought in for questioning Tuesday and was then charged afterward. He was put in jail under a $40,000 bond....

Scandalous Decoys by: Malcolm A. Kline, April 22, 2008 When legendary director Alfred Hitchcock wanted to build suspense and throw off moviegoers he would distract them with what he called a MacGuffin, which Webster’s defines as “an object, event, or character in a film or story that serves to keep the plot in motion despite usually lacking intrinsic importance.” Arguably, some of the wayward college presidents fired by boards of directors in recent years fit this description. For example, the former president of American University, Benjamin Ladner, racked up about half a million dollars a year in expenses that included...
  • Felon trustee says he will resign from SoCal school board

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A man who won a school board seat while jailed on a parole violation says he will resign. Randy L. Hale said Tuesday he will step down from the Romoland School District board to save the district from spending money to contest the election. Trustees in the district 70 miles north of San Diego voted last month to take steps to prevent Hale from serving. "My goal is to help the community and help inform people about what they need to know," Hale told the Riverside Press-Enterprise in a phone call from the state prison in...

ESTES PARK - Estes Park residents voted Tuesday to recall a town trustee who refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance before board meetings. The final vote was 903 to 605 in favor of recalling David Habecker. The turnout was much higher than for a typical municipal election. Some voters, like Trudy Hewitt, said they though Habecker was being unpatriotic. "When you sit down during the Pledge of Allegiance, which is to our flag, which is about patriotism, which is about our country, you dishonor everybody that has fought and sacrificed for our country," she said. "I think his constitutional...

DENVER (AP) - A judge ruled Wednesday that a town can hold a recall election to decide whether to oust a trustee for remaining seated during Pledge of Allegiance at Town Board meetings. U.S. District Judge Edward Nottingham ruled that citizens have a right to disagree with Estes Park Trustee David Habecker and that recall organizers did nothing wrong when they gathered more than 200 signatures supporting the effort. The judge withdrew a temporary injunction that had blocked a recall election that had been scheduled for Feb. 15. The injunction was issued after the trustee filed a lawsuit to stop...
  • CA: Pension trustee: Dead retirees receive pension checks

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Hundreds of dead San Diego city retirees continue to receive pension checks and the city scans the obituaries to determine whether its beneficiaries are still alive, according to a whistle-blower on the city's pension board. San Diego's pension system has a nearly $1.4 billion deficit and is at the heart of investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. attorney and FBI into city finances, possible public corruption and securities fraud. Those investigations were sparked by revelations from Diann Shipione, who testified Monday at the first hearing before the City Council's new Government Efficiency and Openness...

In Estes Park, there's discomfort on all political sides that the flap over a town trustee's refusal to recite the Pledge of Allegiance is redefining the community. "Estes Park is becoming known as a town that wants to recall someone instead of as a tourist attraction," said Linda Wagner, a 12-year resident.
