TULSA, Oklahoma, AUG. 19, 2009 ( The bishop of Tulsa explains his decision to celebrate Mass at the diocesan cathedral "ad orientem" -- facing east -- as an effort to recapture a "more authentic" Catholic worship. Bishop Edward Slattery affirmed this in an article featured in the September edition of the Eastern Oklahoma Catholic, titled "Ad Orientem: Revival of Ancient Rite Brings Multiple Advantages, Some Misperceptions." In a discussion about liturgy, the prelate said, it is necessary to grasp this "essential" truth: "At Mass, Christ joins us to himself as he offers himself in sacrifice to the Father for the...

A Christian evangelical group that works to improve the lives of underprivileged children says it has been prohibited from conducting Bible study classes in public housing projects in Tulsa, Okla., potentially violating a Supreme Court ruling that upheld religious groups' right to the use of public institutions. For more than 70 years, the Missouri-based Child Evangelism Fellowship has worked with underprivileged kids, not only to convert them to Christianity, but to improve their lives through education and after-school activities. In one program, fellowship missionaries visit prisons and sign up inmates' children for Bible study programs in an effort to keep...

With some amount of physical effort, I dragged this broken old body to the Tulsa Tea Party, one of the three, held downtown from 11AM to 1PM. There was a sizeable turnout, though it was not easy to estimate standing (actually sitting as I am unable to stand too long) at the fringe off to the left side of the stage. If I had to guess, I would estimate 1000 to 1250 people were attending, which I feel is a fairly decent turnout for anything downtown here in Tulsa. I am glad to point out that almost every speech accused...

We covered this on the air yesterday, but again people are demanding details. We've often asked on the air why, if Islam the peaceful religion that many Muslims want us to believe it is, we don't hear more Muslims speaking out against Islamic terrorism. Well, now we may have an explanation. Jamal Miftah is a Muslim residing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is an immigrant from Pakistan. Jamal Miftah is a member of the Islamic Center of Tulsa Mosque. On October 29th Jiftah wrote an article for the op-ed page of the Tulsa World. Here is what he wrote:

The governing board of Tulsa's Al-Salam mosque ruled Wednesday night that a Pakistani native who had been banned from the mosque can return. Houssam Elsoueissi, president of the operating council at the mosque, said he would announce at Friday's service that Jamal Miftah is free to attend services as long as there is no disturbance, and that no one at the mosque should confront him. Miftah was banned last week after a confrontation at the mosque over a guest commentary he wrote that appeared Oct. 29 in the Tulsa World.

Some gasoline station owners in Oklahoma are dropping the Venezuelan state owned Citgo brand, saying sales have dropped significantly since the VenezuelanPresident Hugo Chavez criticized President George W. Bush in a speech last month. The president of Tulsa based Arkansas Valley, a wholesale distributor which delivers Citgo gas to about 30 stations in Oklahoma and Missouri, said sales fell 10 percent to 15 percent after Chavez's United Nations speech in which he referred to Bush as “the devil.” “We started losing business at our stores,” company president Weister Smith told the Tulsa World newspaper. “Some of our independent retailers came...

Fifteen months after Tulsa's Church of the Holy Spirit Episcopal became the only church in the state to cut ties with the Episcopal Church over the issues of gay clergy and biblical authority, the congregation has found a permanent rector and a permanent site. "We're not angry, and we're not frustrated," said the Rev. Briane Turley, whose first Sunday service in Tulsa was Aug. 5. "We want to have a positive message for this community. "We have a very strong sense of mission; we want to reach this neighborhood for Christ. We want to reach out to people in all...

Tulsa’s chief law enforcement agencies have conflicting philosophies over dealing with illegal immigrants. The Tulsa Police Department intends to continue its hands-off approach, while the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office wants to tackle enforcement head-on. “Right now we don’t have an immigration office in Tulsa, and in Oklahoma ICE (U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement) is stretched pretty thin,” said Tulsa County Undersheriff Brian Edwards. “There’s not many of them and there are 200 deputies.” Edwards said the Sheriff’s Office recently sent a letter to ICE requesting training that would enable deputies to be “cross-deputized” as immigration enforcement officers. “We operate the...

Police Chief Dave Been said Monday that the reaction of a group opposed to illegal immigration over the city’s hands-off policy on illegal immigrants makes it sound as if its members are “bigots.” Immigration Reform for Oklahoma Now (IRON) demanded that Mayor Kathy Taylor fire Been after comments he made in a Sunday Tulsa World article about how the city deals with illegal immigrants. Carol Helm, the director of IRON, said, “Chief Been is basically letting the citizens of Tulsa know that he is not enforcing all laws for all citizens.” Been said the Police Department’s nearly 20-year-old policy was...

TULSA, Okla. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Tulsa today announced a restriction on kite tubing on all Corps lakes in the Tulsa District. Col. Miroslav Kurka, commander of the Tulsa District, imposed the ban because of the potential for serious injuries caused by uncontrolled flight of these devices. Kite tubes are a relatively new derivative of large inner tubes towed behind speedboats that become airborne. One person died as the result of a kite tube accident this past week in Texas. Many kite tubing injuries are the direct result of the tubes reaching heights of 20...

A Creek County jury late Thursday convicted a former judge who was accused of exposing himself by using a sexual device while he presided over court cases. The panel deliberated more than five hours before returning a guilty verdict against Donald Thompson on all four counts of indecent exposure. The jury had requested a dinner break around 6:30 p.m. and sent a note to the judge at 8:49 p.m. that a decision had been reached. Jurors recommended one year in prison and a $10,000 fine on each count against the judge, 59, who served more than 20 years on the...

BRISTOW, Okla. (AP) -- Former Judge Donald D. Thompson, a veteran of 23 years on the bench, is on trial on charges he used a penis pump on himself in the courtroom while sitting in judgment of others. Over the past few days, the jurors have watched a defense attorney and a prosecutor pantomime masturbation. A doctor has lectured on the lengths the defendant was willing to go to enhance his sexual performance. The white-handled sexual device sits before the jury box for hours at a time. Occasionally an attorney picks it up and squeezes the handle, demonstrating the "sh-sh"...

A new law to protect the public from sex offenders has some people complaining it's too harsh. That law greatly restricts where sex offenders can live. They can't stay within two thousand feet of any school, public or private park or any day care facility. That narrows the options. NewsChannel 8's Joel Doepker spoke with a sex offender to get his story. No sex offender can live near a park. That includes golf courses. Adding all of those areas up, 97-percent of the city is off limits to a sex offender. And, one man tells us he has to sleep...
