A 43-year-old DeKalb man was charged this week with the recent vandalism of a statue of Tupac Shakur at the arts center named for the slain performer. DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said investigators have no reason to believe the suspect, Kenneth Anthony Wilson, had a racial motive in the Oct. 20 incident. Wilson, who lives on North Hairston Road near the center on Memorial Drive, is African-American. A spokeswoman for the center last week said she was told a noose was placed around the neck of the statue and the incident was being investigated as a hate crime. Parish...

US congresswoman Cynthia McKinney is pushing for the public disclosure of all government records related to the life and death of Tupac Shakur. The Georgia state representative has introduced a bill before congress, entitled 'The Tupac Amaru Shakur Records Collection Act of 2005', which calls for the "expeditious disclosure" of those records. The bill is modelled on 1992's John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act which mandates that all material relating to the late president's assassination be housed in one complete collection. If it becomes law, it will mean that the Tupac records will be gathered together in the National...

Scandal Erupts at the L.A. Times By Jan Golab FrontPageMagazine.com | December 2, 2005 Times are bad at the L.A. Times. Competition from new media and “a lingering feeling of bias” continue to plague the paper and drive down circulation. Editors John Carroll, Michael Kinsley and leftist icon Robert Scheer have all recently been sent packing. Now, the once venerable paper faces a scandal of Jayson Blair proportions, one that may topple key players—including a Pulitzer Prize winner—and permanently sully its reputation. The Times’ questionable coverage of the Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. (AKA Biggie Smalls) murders has long been...

After 9/11, everyone knew there was going to be a debate about the future of Islam. We just didn't know the debate would be between Osama bin Laden and Tupac Shakur. Yet those seem to be the lifestyle alternatives that are really on offer for poor young Muslim men in places like France, Britain and maybe even the world beyond. A few highly alienated and fanatical young men commit themselves to the radical Islam of bin Laden. But most find their self-respect by embracing the poses and worldview of American hip-hop and gangsta rap. One of the striking things about...
