Texas accounts for almost half the nearly 1.3 million industry jobs associated with unconventional oil and gas production in the 16 producing states this year, according to a new study. Some 576,000 Texans were in jobs linked to unconventional oil and gas in 2012, and that is expected to rise to almost 930,000 by the end of the decade, the IHS Global Insight study released Wednesday says. Oil shales, oil sands, gas-to-liquids and coal-to-liquids are examples of unconventional oil and gas resources. The resources are often extracted using techniques other than traditional ones like wells. There are big economic impacts...

It may be the biggest insult since salsa made in New York City. Texas, long the nation’s oil capital, could get upstaged by California. That’s right, California. Enron’s prey-ground. Cap-and-trade fantasyland. Home of fossil-fuel-hating, electric-car-driving, green-dreamers. Last week, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management sold 15 leases for about 18,000 acres in California’s Monterey Shale, which stretches 200 miles south from San Francisco. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates the shale formation could hold 15.4 billion barrels of oil, which would be double the combined reserves of the Bakken formation in North Dakota and the Eagle Ford shale of South...

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro and his twin brother Joaquín, a Democrat set to represent Texas in the next Congress, think a reexamination of gun laws is in order in the wake of the Newtown school shooting that left 20 children dead. The two men discussed the gun control debate with journalist and television host Charlie Rose during a roundtable on Monday, with Julián saying he backs the renewal of the assault weapons ban. "I believe that Senator Feinstein has it right with regard to the assault weapons ban, that it ought to be reintroduced," he said. But the mayor...

Lawmakers and educators in Texas say the way to guard against school shootings like last Friday's at a Connecticut elementary school is to make sure teachers can shoot back. While the rampage that left 20 young children and six adults dead in a small Northeastern community has sparked a national debate on gun control, assault weapons and a culture of violence, David Thweatt, superintendent of the 103-student Harrold Independent School District in Wilbarger County, said his teachers are armed and ready to protect their young charges. “We give our ‘Guardians’ training in addition to the regular Texas conceal-and-carry training,” Thweatt,...
