President Joe Biden's former coronavirus czar scolded Americans for not sacrificing enough during the past year to stem the pandemic. Andy Slavitt, who resigned as a senior adviser to the White House pandemic response team last week, suggested that Americans were selfish and have only themselves to blame for the tragedies of the past year. He made the snide comments Monday on "CBS This Morning" while shilling his new book “Preventable: The Inside Story of How Leadership Failures, Politics, and Selfishness Doomed the U.S. Coronavirus Response."

Gunfire from "heavy weaponry" was exchanged for much of Sunday outside a United Nations building on the outskirts of South Sudan's capital Juba, in fresh violence after a day of relative calm, the U.N. mission to the country said. The mission sent out a series of tweets at about 8:25 a.m. (1:25 a.m. ET) describing "gunshots" and a "heavily armed exchange" outside a U.N. compound.

There's a reason Florida is one of the most desired places to live: it's Jeb Bush. There is a reason that Florida is a strong Republican-controlled state: Jeb Bush. There is even a reason Marco Rubio is running for president today: Yep, Jeb again. !

I have a faded sticker on the back of my car that reads: I (heart) Scotland. I have a feeling it was stuck there by some fellows from Strathclyde police when they came down to help with the Notting Hill carnival, and I keep it there because it reflects my general feelings. I (heart) Scotland in the way that so many of us Sassenachs do: you know, fabulous place, lovely people, gorgeous purple moors, great white beaches and an incomparable contribution to Western thought and civilisation, from Adam Smith to Andrew Neil. I (heart) Scotland so much that I once...

A familiar air of indecision preceded President Obama’s pep talk to the nation. The first draft of his schedule for Monday contained no plans to comment on the downgrading of the U.S. credit rating by Standard & Poor’s. Then the White House announced that he would speak at 1 p.m. A second update changed that to 1:30. At 1:52, Obama walked into the State Dining Room to read his statement. Judging from the market reaction, he should have stuck with his original instinct. “No matter what some agency may say, we’ve always been and always will be a AAA country,”...

The mark of any successful political venture by Governor Palin often results a misrepresentation of her words that only leaves the media with egg on their faces. Governor Palin’s bus tour has been successful in allowing her to highlight the greatness of the history of America, meet everyday Americans and fellow politicians, and share her policy stances on everything from fishing regulations in New Hampshire to ethanol subsidies to the debt ceiling. Such successes leaves the media grasping at proverbial bendy straws. Today’s news is no different. Poised with the opportunity to more appropriately address political stories essentially pre-written for...

Donald A. Fox, a professor of vision sciences in UH's College of Optometry (UHCO), described his team's findings in a paper titled "Low-Level Gestational Lead Exposure Increases Retinal Progenitor Cell Proliferation and Rod Photoreceptor and Bipolar Cell Neurogenesis in Mice," published recently online in Environmental Health Perspectives and soon to be published in...

For Immediate Release Thursday, June 17, 2010 On Thursday, Texas State Representatives Bill Callegari (District 132, Katy) and Garnet Coleman (District 147, Houston) joined other Houston-area legislators calling for the inclusion of the University of Houston in the Big 12 conference. In a letter addressed to the president of each university in the conference and the Big 12 commissioner, the legislators noted that, "Despite UH's local and statewide prominence, the university does not belong to a strong BCS conference such as the Big 12. The Cougars, the City of Houston, and the State of Texas deserve better." Last week, the...

From the CNN transcript of 6/03/10, some 40+ days after the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and subsequent oil spill....... KING: Have the scientists discussed, what about a hurricane? OBAMA: You know, Wolf, I did -- I had a Situation Room meeting about a week-and-a-half ago where we got the report that this could be a more severe than normal hurricane season. And I asked, well, how does a potential oil spill interact with a hurricane?

Obama is the most remarkable Democratic communicator of my lifetime, I think, and even he's not rising to the task, yet. He needs to lay out his priorities, clearly; he needs to simplify his pitch, yet he also needs to add some depth to his and our understanding of how we got here. This economic crisis is not just about bad mortgages and/or the housing bubble bursting, and it won't be solved by reinflating that bubble, the Republicans' latest dumb idea. These problems have been building since at least the 1970s. Here's how Reich laid it out on Salon....

RUSH: Grab audio sound bite number 26 first, Mike. I didn't know we'd get to this this early. I asked Cookie to put together a little montage here of all the stuttering around that Obama did in his press conference today and I want you to hear this because -- and we didn't repeat anything here. It goes 46 seconds, and we're doing this because we hear constantly, "What a great orator and a great communicator! Ohhhh, this man is smooth!" Just listen. This is a great illustration here of what happened when you take the teleprompter and your prepared...

"Let me be absolutely clear," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, said today at a press conference in Amman, Jordan. "Israel is a strong friend of Israel's. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under a McCain...administration. It will be a strong friend of Israel's under an Obama administration. So that policy is not going to change."
