In the desert within 35 miles of one of the nation's largest cities and about 70 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, Arizona authorities found a car ablaze with five bodies burned beyond recognition inside. The location of the smoldering car in a known smuggling corridor and the nature of the crime itself have Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu saying that he's all but certain a violent cartel is responsible. The area known as the Vekol Valley where the bodies were found has been the scene of shootouts among smuggling groups fighting over loads of drugs or illegal immigrants, high-speed...

He tells of underheated sublets, a night spent in an alley, a dead neighbor on the landing. From their fire escape, he and an unnamed roommate watch “white people from the better neighborhoods” bring their dogs to defecate on the block. He takes a job in an unidentified “consulting house to multinational corporations,” where he is “a spy behind enemy lines,” startled to find himself with a secretary, a suit and money in the bank.

"I think President Obama has overperformed," Flynt says. "He got handed on his platter when he became president more than any president in history ever had to deal with.... I think he's done a marvelous job." In the wide-ranging interview with Salam, Flynt talks about his brief but "profound" religious experience in the 1970s, as well as his views on why pornography is good for society.  "I did have a very profound religious experience," Flynt said. "I sought out a psychiatrist immediately after it happened to me."  "This is largely thought to be because of an iodine deficiency in your diet,"...

Picture this: A small Norwegian island dotted with pine trees, rocky coasts, rustic farms and private, wooden cottages. It sounds almost like the perfect romantic getaway. But the residents are actually inmates confined to what some are calling the "world's nicest prison." CNN has an excellent, in-depth look at Bastoy Prison, located on a one-square-mile island in southern Norway. It's unconventional to say the least; neither the prisoners nor the guards wear uniforms, and the inmates have keys to their own rooms. "It's still prison," said one inmate, "Luke," 23, who withheld his full name. "In your mind, you are...

He reportedly posed at a casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco, where Clinton attended a “Nights in Monaco” fundraising gala. At least two other celebrities, actresses Diane Kruger and Rose McGowan, were in attendance.

Facebook just joined a “troubled club,” warns the Economist. Now it’s just another “endangered public company.” Yes, endangered. The number of public companies has declined 37% since 1997. The number of IPOs has dropped from 311 annually before 2000 to 99 the past decade. Meanwhile, the smart CEOs and the Super Rich are “going private,” to avoid government red tape restricting capitalism. Reuters Over at BusinessWeek they’re warning investors that the growing number of “cutesy mascots” is a dangerous reminder “of the dot-com boom’s irrational exuberance.” They’re also red flagging new reports that “more Chinese investors are betting on U.S....

Patricia Krentcil, the New Jersey woman dubbed the "Tanning Mom" after she was arrested for allegedly taking her young daughter tanning, wants people to know she's not the leather-faced lunatic the media has made her out to be. "I'm up at 3 in the morning, making sure all the wash is done," Krentcil told the "Today" show from her Nutley home in a taped interview that aired Monday. "My husband goes to work at 4:30, he works from Wall Street. And then I make pancakes, pack their bags, and they're all off and gone. And then I work all day...

Harry Stone was on one of his usual jogs in a Kansas City suburb shortly before 7:30 a.m. Sunday when an approaching car slowed down and a passenger shot him. The vehicle kept going without stopping, and Stone, 60, later died at a hospital. Nearly a week later, police in Raytown, Missouri, say they have no suspects, and no one has any idea why he was targeted. He wasn’t robbed. He didn’t have any known enemies. And a gang-initiation hit appears implausible, Raytown police Capt. Ted Bowman said. “Even grasping at straws and imagining motives, we have been able to...

  • Man Arrested in Connection with Mississippi Fatal Shootings

    05/18/2012 9:06:27 AM PDT · by AngelesCrestHighway · 10 replies
Authorities in Mississippi have arrested a suspect in the two fatal shootings last week during what authorities initially thought were phony police stops in the northern part of the state. James D. Willie, 28, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the shootings. Willie, who has an extensive criminal record, was arrested Tuesday on rape and aggravated-assault charges. Police allegedly found a Ruger 9mm, semi-automatic handgun in his possession during the arrest, which investigators determined to be a match of the weapon used in last week's shootings.

Eduardo Saverin can escape the United States, but he cannot slip Facebook. “Everything I do in my personal life, in my professional life, it’s completely there,” said Mr. Saverin, a Facebook co-founder, in his first major interview. “A lot of what I do, what everyone does, is influenced by it.” Alone among Facebook’s 900 million users, Mr. Saverin is special: a billionaire with only the vaguest of causes. He co-founded Facebook at age 21, then left two years later with a legal settlement that cut him off from Facebook but left him phenomenally wealthy. His stake will most likely be...

We've all got to go sometime. But 67-year-old Robert Gene White did so in a way that some men would find enviable, after receiving several lap dances at a Texas strip club. And he managed to pass away before having to pay his bill. Local Fox affiliate KDFW reports that White "enjoyed several lap dances" on a Friday night at the Red Parrot Strip Club in El Paso before meeting his demise.
  • JPMorgan's Trading Loss Is Said to Rise at Least 50% (This Suckfest is only getting worse)

The trading losses suffered by JPMorgan Chase have surged in recent days, surpassing the bank's initial $2 billion estimate by at least $1 billion, according to people with knowledge of the losses. When Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan's chief executive, announced the losses last Thursday, he indicated they could double within the next few quarters. But that process has been compressed into four trading days as hedge funds and other investors take advantage of JPMorgan's distress, fueling faster deterioration in the underlying credit market positions held by the bank.

Don't try to friend MaLi Arwood on Facebook. You won't find her there. You won't find Thomas Chin, either. Or Kariann Goldschmitt. Or Jake Edelstein. More than 900 million people worldwide check their Facebook accounts at least once a month, but millions more are Facebook holdouts. They say they don't want Facebook. They insist they don't need Facebook. They say they're living life just fine without the long-forgotten acquaintances that the world's largest social network sometimes resurrects. They are the resisters.

At a campaign stop in Youngstown, Ohio, today, Vice President Joe Biden lit into Republicans and their presumed presidential nominee Mitt Romney for what he described as a failure to understand the plight of the middle class. "I resent when they talk about families like mine that I grew up in. I resent the fact that they think we're talking about envy: it's job envy, it's wealthy envy; that we don't dream," an impassioned Biden told a crowd of manufacturing workers. "My mother believed and my father believed that if I wanted to be president of the United States, that...

“We want to harness all the benefits of bricks to really propel student learning … but at the same time we find the lack of really good information about results and accountability really troubling,” said Dr. W.V. Lernen, a co-author of the report and the director of the Center for Study of The Apocryphal Cannon. About one third of all students in brick and mortar schools leave unprepared for college and work. Dr. Lernen finds that disturbing. “It’s hard to imagine that sitting in brick classrooms for 180 days works well for students, but that appears to be the primary...
