Alone with John McCain (Univision Interviews McCain)

But, talking about secure borders... -Sure. -You voted for the construction of the wall between Mexico and the United States. However, the Mexican Government has just confirmed that every year, at least half a million Mexicans come to the United States. How exactly are you planning to secure that border? Every single minute there is an immigrant coming into the United States illegally. -I didn't vote for, I am not sure what you are talking about, but we can secure... -...about 700 miles. -I say we can secure our borders with walls and/or fences in urban areas, and then virtual...

Nielsen: McCain’s speech draws more viewers than Obama’s — while airing on fewer networks

Just across. BET and TV One apparently decided that with Barry O already pulling 90-95% of the black vote, they needn’t bother turning any precious airtime over to McCain. In fact, all four nights of the Democratic convention aired on both networks. The GOP convention didn’t air at all. Do note: Palin finished just shy of both candidates in total audience running on only six networks, two fewer than McCain and four fewer than Obama. Telemundo and Univision didn’t bother with night three coverage.

McCain linked to influence peddling claim

Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee for president, has been linked by documents and testimony to another alleged case of what critics are calling influence peddling, this time involving a minority broadcaster in Pittsburgh. The New York Times last week published a major, controversial expose that insinuated McCain had a romantic relationship with telecommunications lobbyist Vicki Iseman, whose clients had a large stake in decisions made by the Senate Commerce Committeee McCain headed. The report, however, was denied by McCain and widely discredited for lack of evidence. According to his own testimony, it wasn't until he decided to give...

Tancredo commended for boycotting Spanish language GOP debate

An English language advocate is praising Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo for boycotting a recent Spanish language debate with his fellow GOP hopefuls. The debate was held on the University of Miami campus on Sunday and was broadcast on the Spanish language network Univision. Candidates' responses, spoken in English, were simultaneously translated into Spanish. Congressman Tancredo (R-Colorado) was the only GOP candidate who turned down an invitation to attend the debate, saying his fellow candidates were "encouraging violation of the law" by taking part. Tancredo -- who has made a tough stand on illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign...

Tancredo asserts that Univision viewers are unlikely to vote

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) criticized his fellow GOP presidential hopefuls for pandering to Hispanics and asserted Tuesday that those watching Sunday’s Spanish-language debate are unlikely to vote. Tancredo is the only GOP candidate who skipped the Univision debate that was simulcast in Spanish. He blasted his colleagues for appearing, saying the only audience that matters is people who speak English. “If they can’t understand the English language, then, of course, they shouldn’t be citizens,” Tancredo said on Fox News. “They shouldn’t be voting.
GOP: Stop The Latino Pandering

Whose idea was it that the Republican presidential candidates have a Spanish-spoken debate? Obviously it was an attempt to woo Latino voters, at the same time, make an attempt to quell the perceived bashing “immigrants” are taking nowadays. After Sunday night’s debate, the media has taken many angles on this attempt. Some consider the olive branch a noble gesture, while some have taken the opportunity to lecture the GOP about our nation’s strong Spanish-speaking heritage, while reminding us of the strides Latinos have made to master America’s official tongue.

Univision Debate: Republicans Make Hard Sell to Latinos

Editor’s Note: By participating in the historic Spanish-language debate on Univision, Republican candidates finally realized that they need Latino votes. But is it “too little, too late?" NAM editor Elena Shore monitors Spanish language media. The first Spanish-language Republican presidential candidate debate couldn’t have come at a better time for the GOP. Latino support for the Republican Party has dropped substantially when the Latino vote is more important than ever. The candidates’ jostling over who is tougher on immigration has alienated Latinos even further. Seven of the eight Republican presidential candidates showed up at the University of Miami Sunday with...

Ron Paul: Not a panderer

(At Spanish Language Debate) He just walked into the lion's den by saying we ought to both talk and trade with Castro's Cuba. Loud boos followed. He then said our policies propped up the likes of Fidel and Hugo Chavez. More boos. And then there was a third round as he finished his statement. Needless to say, the Ron Paul post-debate party won't be at the Versailles over on Calle Ocho (though the ropa vieja and plantains are superb).

Why I won't do Spanish debate (Tancredo gives reasons)

By TOM TANCREDO www.tancredo.house.gov I declined the invitation to participate in the Spanish-language Republican presidential debate on Sunday because I do not want to endorse the further Balkanization of American political life. The debate is being sponsored by Univisión, the country's largest Spanish-language network, and the candidates' answers will be translated into Spanish. Spanish-language news broadcasts and public-affairs programming is an expression of our First Amendment freedoms. I have given many interviews to Univisión as well as local Spanish-language stations. However, a Spanish-language presidential debate is a different animal altogether.

Univision and The Republican Debate In Spanish (Don't Press One For English)

Talk about a turnaround: Republican presidential contenders who couldn't be dragged near a Spanish-language debate three short months ago suddenly are tripping all over each other in the mad dash to take part in the debate next Sunday at the University of Miami. Back in August, the Spanish-language network Univision offered the presidential candidates from both parties a chance to make history. For the first time ever, the network planned to put on nationally televised presidential debates in Spanish. The Democrats accepted. The Republicans, for the most part, scurried for cover. The notable exceptions, to their credit, were Sen. John...

The World According to Univision

John Edwards has not taken a definitive position on abortion. Hillary Clinton's position on the issue is that "she will fight for the defense of children." And Barack Obama wants taxes to be "as low as possible." Each of these statements is misleading, at best. Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Clinton support "a woman's right to choose" and Mr. Obama wants to repeal the Bush tax cuts. But on Univision, a Spanish-language TV network with an average prime-time audience of about 3.5 million viewers, these and other slanted statements about the presidential candidates are commonplace.
