Mackinac Center analyst Jack McHugh has called the long process of hollowing out a private economy to prop up an unsustainable government "Detroitification." Detroit's most recent comprehensive annual financial report shows just how much the title-city itself has been hollowed. The report lists the number of jobs provided by the city's largest employers, which indicates how sensitive its finances are to the actions of a particular firm. In Detroit's case, six of the top 10 employers are not private businesses at all, but government entities: public schools, the city government, the U.S. government, Wayne State University, the State of Michigan...

Evelyn Burgess was in a jealous rage when she assaulted her teenage cousin for wearing what she considered an inappropriate outfit to Easter dinner. But she relaxed after chasing 19-year-old Danielle Pickens outside and fatally shooting her in the face as she cowered in a car parked in front of Burgess' North Side house. "(Burgess) calmly walked away and stated, 'I killed the bitch,' and placed the gun on the mantel above the fireplace," Assistant Prosecutor Laurie Arsenault said in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. How easy is it to pop the bubble of safety we all walk around in? How suddenly can a town of smiling friends and neighbors turn into a den of contorted-faced ghouls? It only takes a moment. I realized this when I got a letter from a local family who wanted to recount a horrifying incident. The young parents — who asked that their full names not be printed — were visiting Columbia’s Activity & Recreation Center on a recent Sunday. Their 20-month-old son is learning to swim, and they spent the afternoon splashing in the indoor pool. But as...
