Mackinac Center analyst Jack McHugh has called the long process of hollowing out a private economy to prop up an unsustainable government "Detroitification." Detroit's most recent comprehensive annual financial report shows just how much the title-city itself has been hollowed. The report lists the number of jobs provided by the city's largest employers, which indicates how sensitive its finances are to the actions of a particular firm. In Detroit's case, six of the top 10 employers are not private businesses at all, but government entities: public schools, the city government, the U.S. government, Wayne State University, the State of Michigan...

Upper Marlboro, MD --(Ammoland.com)- It’s been ten years since Rev. Kenn Blanchard launched the URL, BlackManWithAGun.com. The provocative website announced a pro-gun primer of the same name that has been a stalwart introduction to gun rights from the view point of an African American firearms instructor for ten years. Blanchard has been involved in almost every event in the last ten years involving a person of color and gun legislation in the United States. He is a sought after resource for historical knowledge on the racist roots of gun control and common sense solutions for people that fear guns. Blanchard,...

Evelyn Burgess was in a jealous rage when she assaulted her teenage cousin for wearing what she considered an inappropriate outfit to Easter dinner. But she relaxed after chasing 19-year-old Danielle Pickens outside and fatally shooting her in the face as she cowered in a car parked in front of Burgess' North Side house. "(Burgess) calmly walked away and stated, 'I killed the bitch,' and placed the gun on the mantel above the fireplace," Assistant Prosecutor Laurie Arsenault said in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. The 42-year-old defendant pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of murder in the April 4...

How easy is it to pop the bubble of safety we all walk around in? How suddenly can a town of smiling friends and neighbors turn into a den of contorted-faced ghouls? It only takes a moment. I realized this when I got a letter from a local family who wanted to recount a horrifying incident. The young parents — who asked that their full names not be printed — were visiting Columbia’s Activity & Recreation Center on a recent Sunday. Their 20-month-old son is learning to swim, and they spent the afternoon splashing in the indoor pool. But as...

Family members of a 14-year-old boy who was killed while attempting to rob a convenience store Thursday night said Friday that they are eager to see the full investigation to determine whether his death was necessary. Tulsa Police Capt. Dave Roberts said two masked robbers walked into Zeba Food Mart No. 2, at 506 E. 56th St. North, with a rifle around 10:45 p.m. and started shooting. Tulsa Fire Department driver Sam Agee said the robbers were wearing plastic masks that distorted their faces. Zahid Khan, an employee at the store, returned fire with a handgun, shooting one of the...

4:53 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010 A man was shot and killed for beer Saturday morning in northwest Atlanta, police said. A body was reported in the 2700 block of Defoors Ferry Road at about 8:40 a.m., said Atlanta homicide detective Maj. Keith Meadows. "It's pretty cut and dried," said Meadows, who said witnesses told police a man walking alongside the road with a 12-pack of beer was confronted by another man. "The victim refused to give up the beer and was shot once in the chest," said Meadows.
