The V8 engine is probably the most popular engine configuration around, mostly because it has been around for decades. However, if you've been wanting to build your own remote-controlled car powered by a V8, your choices for a model V8 engine are thin and most of them are pricey. Toyan, a company known for making scale model engines, has released a V8 engine that's relatively affordable. Currently selling for a promo price of $1,799.99 at Stirlingkit, the Toyan FS-V800 can be bought as either a DIY kit or a pre-assembled version on a 1/10 scale. The video atop this page...
  • LONG LIVE THE V-8! EV Charging Insanity

    02/16/2022 9:36:04 AM PST · by norsky · 76 replies
EV Charging Insanity In order to match the 2,000 cars that a typical filling station can service in a busy 12 hours, an EV charging station would require 600, 50-watt chargers at an estimated cost of $24 million and a supply of 30 megawatts of power from the grid. That is enough to power 20,000 homes. No one likely thinks about the fact that it can take 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge a vehicle between empty or just topping off. What are the drivers doing during that time? ICSC-Canada board member New Zealand-based consulting engineer Bryan Leyland describes...
  • Ubiquitous food additive alters human microbiota and intestinal environment (Carboxymethylcellulose)

    12/02/2021 3:36:41 PM PST · by ConservativeMind · 17 replies
New research indicates a widely used food additive, carboxymethylcellulose, alters the intestinal environment of healthy persons, perturbing levels of beneficial bacteria and nutrients. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a synthetic member of a widely used class of food additives, termed emulsifiers, which are added to many processed foods to enhance texture and promote shelf life. It had long been assumed that CMC was safe to ingest because it is eliminated in the feces without being absorbed. Experiments in mice found that CMC, and some other emulsifiers, altered gut bacteria resulting in more severe disease in a range of chronic inflammatory conditions, including...

Unless you're into model cars (like, really into them) you may not have heard of Conley Precision Engines. That's a shame. Why? Because they build the Stinger 609, the world's smallest supercharged four-stroke V-8 engine, which has finally entered production. At just 6.09 cubic inches (hence the name), or nearly 100 cc, it's a very small displacement V-8. Despite the small displacement, the engine revs to 10,000 rpm and produces 9 horsepower.

DETROIT — Pontiac, the brand that invented the muscle car under its flamboyant engineer John Z. DeLorean, helped Burt Reynolds elude Sheriff Justice in “Smokey and the Bandit” and taught baby boomers to salivate over horsepower, but produced mostly forgettable cars for their children, will endure a lonely death on Sunday after about 40 million in sales. It was 84 years old. The cause of death was in dispute. Fans said Pontiac’s wounds were self-inflicted, while General Motors blamed a terminal illness contracted during last year’s bankruptcy. Pontiac built its last car nearly a year ago, but the official end...

STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz said it is rolling out a second diesel offering for its flagship S-Class lineup this month, a new 2006 S420 CDI. The latest edition to the S-Class lineup develops 320 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque from a 3996cc CDI engine with twin turbochargers. The engine is mated to a standard seven-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel gearshift controls. The S420 CDI sprints from zero to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph. The company said the more powerful diesel model replaces the V8-powered S400 CDI. Standard features include automatic climate...

August 9, 2005 Yes folks, this is a man’s barbeque. That’s Tim Kowalec firing up Chrysler Group's one-of-a-kind HEMI-powered grill at an event to announce the top five finalists in the company’s "What Can You HEMI?" contest. Until the event, the HEMI engine was only found in Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicles. With the power and torque of the 5.7-liter V-8 HEMI engine, the grill can cook 240 HEMI dogs in three minutes and is covered by more than 330 square feet of steel. The contest involved people sending in concepts for machines that could be powered by a...

Oil Prices Drop More Than $1 a Barrel SINGAPORE (AP) - Oil prices dropped more than $1 a barrel Wednesday morning after U.S. government data showed that supplies of crude oil and gasoline grew last week. Light, sweet crude for May delivery fell $1.36 to $50.50 a barrel in morning trade on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On the International Petroleum Exchange in London, Brent crude fell 70 cents to $51.28 a barrel. The U.S. Department of Energy said...

Despite high U.S. gasoline prices, DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler division on Wednesday said demand for its muscular Hemi V-8 engines was outstripping supply. "What we see is a tremendous shortage of our Hemis," Chrysler President and Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche told reporters. "It's a great problem to have," he added, saying Chrysler had underestimated demand for the big 5.7 liter engine, which is available in Dodge pickups and sport utility vehicles as well as the recently introduced Chrysler 300C sedan and Dodge Magnum sport wagon. Zetsche spoke on the sidelines of celebrations at two Detroit-area assembly plants, as Chrysler launched production of...

We're power mad. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Fuel-sipping hybrid gasoline-electric cars may get plenty of hype at the North American International Auto Show, but when they vote with their wallets, more Americans elected a big, powerful V8 engine last year than any time since 1985.
