In an effort to cut defense spending, the Obama Administration plans to cut health benefits for active duty and retired military personnel and their families while not touching the benefits enjoyed by unionized civilian defense workers. The move, congressional aides suggested, is to force those individuals into Obamacare, Bill Gertz reported at the Washington Beacon.

Vice President Joe Biden earned ridicule from foes Saturday when he twice referred to the Democratic Virginia Senate candidate by the wrong first name. Biden began his remarks to an enthusiastic crowd of about 1,500 at the Lynchburg Armory by praising former Gov. Tim Kaine with the correct name but later declared two times that he is "a big Tom Kaine fan." Kaine is running against Republican George Allen for the seat vacated by Democrat Sen. Jim Webb, who is retiring. The vice president went on to offer similar compliments for ex-Rep. Tom Perriello, whose first name is Tom. A...

A Virginia company filed a lawsuit after it was forced to stop its construction of a monument in Alabama honoring a noted Confederate general, who also was a member of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The federal suit, filed by KTK Mining of Richmond, claims that the company received the necessary permits to do the work on the monument in Old Live Oak Cemetery honoring Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, The Selma Times-Journal reported. However, the city of Selma, Alabama, suspended the permits when the project drew protests. The KTK mining company claims it had not received notice prior to the...

It's been called "snowicane" and "worse than the perfect storm," and it could knock out power in the mid-Atlantic through Election Day. Hurricane Sandy hasn't even made it past the Bahamas yet, but Sandy, or any natural disaster around Election Day, could wreak extreme havoc on the election, experts say. The poll shows a nine-point shift in the margin and a four-point increase in support for Romney. A month ago, Obama topped Romney by seven points in this battleground state (50-43 percent). The president has also lost ground in the state on his job performance and favorable rating. In 2008, Obama...

The Washington Post has decided to back President Obama for reelection acknowledging the shortcomings of his first term: President Barack Obama is better positioned to be that navigator than is his Republican challenger, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. We come to that judgment with eyes open to the disappointments of Mr. Obamas first term. He did not end, as he promised he would, our chronic avoidance of tough decisions on fiscal matters. The Romney camp and GOP operatives on the ground in key swing states think the wind is at their back. A senior Republican told me Sunday night that Mitt Romney is up by two to three points in Virginia, which President Obama won by nearly seven points in 2008. Two recent polls have Romney tied or up one point in Iowa, while two others have Obama up eight and three points. Private Republican polling has Romney up by one point. Republican operatives, who see swing-state voters, by definition, as representative of the country as a whole. In the GOPs view,...

(CNN) - Perhaps it only makes sense that a candidate who prepared for a presidential debate near Colonial Williamsburg would choose to slam Mitt Romney's plan for more Navy ships by using the phrase "horses and bayonets." President Barack Obama's quip - meant to make the point that modern warfare doesn't require the type of equipment it did in the past - appeared part of a larger strategy of casting his opponent as stuck in a time warp on important issues. And Republicans, seeing an opening, are making sure shipbuilders just down the road from President Barack Obama's Virginia prep...
  • [February 23, 1988] Navy Chief Quits, Assailing Carlucci Over Budget Cuts

    New York Times Published: February 23, 1988 ^ | February 23, 1988 | JOHN H. CUSHMAN Jr.,
Navy Secretary James H. Webb Jr. resigned today, sharply criticizing Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci's plan to cut the Navy's fleet and his approach to managing the Pentagon. His abrupt departure, which took Pentagon officials by surprise, was the most visible sign to date of turmoil within the military hierarchy over next year's budget, which keeps military spending virtually flat, at $299.5 billion, and reduces the size of the armed forces. Administration officials said President Reagan planned to appoint William L. Ball 3d, his assistant for legislative affairs, to succeed Mr. Webb. Mr. Webb's resignation is effective upon the President's...

If you dont think you can change Washington from inside the White House, then lets give you the plane ticket back to Chicago you have earned. Christie said. I mean that is a scary thing for the President of the United States to say, isnt it?

Seen here first, this ad, produced by the advocacy group Checks and Balances for Economic Growth, was funded with what a spokesperson called a significant statewide buy in Ohio. The ad calls out incumbent Ohio Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown for his claim that there was no War on Coal. Brown made this statement during an Oct. 15 debate with his GOP challenger Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel.
  • Norfolk Southern lays off 200, cites coal traffic decrease

BLUEFIELD, W.Va.-Norfolk Southern Corp. says it has laid off about 200 workers in the railroad's divisions based in Bluefield and Roanoke. Robin Chapman of Norfolk Southern tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that decreased coal traffic led to the furloughs. Chapman said the company has offered affected employees jobs at seven other areas in the Norfolk Southern system: Chicago, Elkhart, Ind., Toledo and Cleveland, Ohio, and Conway, Altoona and Harrisburg, Pa. Chapman said accepting one of those placements would require "permanent relocation."

The D.C. Council is poised to lower the cost of speed camera tickets from a maximum of $250 to just $50. The plan unveiled on Tuesday is meant to create the impression that the District has seen the light and has finally decided to go easier on motorists. Considering the source of the latest plan, thats hardly likely. The District and the for-profit vendor in charge of the robotic cameras dish out more tickets in a year than the city has residents. This has created a pile of loot so lofty that its only a matter of time before it...
  • Millennials less enthusiastic about Obama this election

The cheering midst of a rally featuring President Barack Obama and a largely college-age crowd of 15,000 on the Oval at Ohio State University would not seem a likely place to encounter those not in the president’s corner. Yet, the first five students approached at random by a Dispatch reporter on Oct. 9 turned out to support Republican Mitt Romney and his aspirations of replacing Obama in the White House. The must-vote adoration and enthusiasm for Obama isn’t what it once was among 18- to 29-year-old Millennials in central Ohio, a must-win area in a must-win state for presidential hopefuls....
  • Utica shale, below the Marcellus, contains large gas, oil reserves, study shows

Drilling companies beginning to explore the Utica shale got a piece of good news Friday when the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the rock formation in Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states holds enormous reserves of natural gas and oil. Releasing its first estimate of the Utica, the USGS calculated the shale formation holds about 38 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered, recoverable natural gas, 940 million barrels of oil and 9 million barrels of natural gas liquids like ethane and propane. The Utica lies beneath the Marcellus shale...
