By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press Writer1 hour, 39 minutes ago U.S. Rep. Brad Miller (news, bio, voting record) chuckled through most of the first debate with his Republican challenger, who led a tense and often awkward discussion about sex-related issues Tuesday. Vernon Robinson, who has run a series of brash advertisements about the two-term Democratic congressman, charged that Miller wants to import homosexuals to the United States and supported scientific studies that would pay teenage girls to watch pornography. "Those are San Francisco values, not North Carolina values," said Robinson, repeating a common theme of his campaign. A bemused Miller...

... And so I decided to pick up the phone, dial Brad's private cell number and try to make peace so that he and I, the media and the voters, could all move on to more important things. My telephone encounter with him didn't go so well. I placed the call on Sept. 28 at approximately 12:50 p.m. Brad was outside the House chambers readying for a roll-call vote. I began cordially. JL: "Congressman, this is Jim Longworth… I want you to know that I have nothing against you personally, and there's no sense in this feud escalating." My intent...

RALEIGH - Wake District Attorney Colon Willoughby said Monday he has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into allegations that the husband of a state Supreme Court candidate began voting in North Carolina before his felony probation in Georgia ended. State Board of Elections officials asked Willoughby to investigate the voting record of Connie Mack Berry Jr., the husband of Rachel Lea Hunter. Hunter, a Durham lawyer who lives in Cary, is running for the state Supreme Court against sitting justice Mark Martin. If Berry voted or registered to vote before his probation ended, he could face a...

Quotes from Vernon Robinson's newest Campaign ad: "Brad Miller even spent your tax dollars to pay teenage girls to watch pornographic movies with probes connected to their genitalia." "Brad Miller spent your money to study the masturbation habits of old men." "Brad Miller spent your tax dollars to study the sex habits of Vietnamese prostitutes in San Francisco" "Brad Miller spent your tax dollars to study something called the bisexual, trangendered and two spirited Aluetian Eskimos"

Spouse's role limited Connie Mack Berry Jr., the husband of state Supreme Court candidate Rachel Lea Hunter, can do many things to help his wife's campaign: put up yard signs, hand out campaign literature, extol her virtues on blogs. But he cannot vote for her. Berry, 67, was convicted in Georgia years ago of swindling customers of his jewelry business, according to news reports in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Vernon Robinson: My New Conservative Herohttp://www.postchronicle.com/commentary/article_21227787.shtml By Sher Zieve Jul 12, 2006 I don't live in North Carolina but, if I did I'd campaign for Vernon Robinson. Running for the House of Representatives, Robinson is engaged in a campaign that firmly attacks the country's liberals and leftists in a most remarkable way. Robinson tells the unvarnished truth about them with great humor and some of the best sarcasm from a politician that I've ever heard. Robinson's truth has even recently been reported to have made a number of liberal "journalists" heads explode. No, THAT'S something I would have paid to...

Madame Loony TunesEven Democrats, Republicans agree on this candidate A candidate for N.C. Supreme Court justice who promotes herself as Madame Justice deserves a nickname in her campaign, all right, but not the one lawyer Rachel Lea Hunter wants. Ms. Hunter, a Democrat, has never been a judge, but she wants voters to oust Associate Justice Mark Martin, a Republican, and elect her. She wanted the State Board of Elections to put her on the Nov. 7 ballot as "Madame Justice." No way, the board said. She should try Madame Loony Tunes.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The leaders of the state's Democratic and Republican parties have asked voters not to cast ballots for state Supreme Court candidate Rachel Lea Hunter, whose fiery rhetoric in recent weeks has included comparing the actions of a black congressional candidate to that of a slave. "She's unstable and unqualified, and the thought of her serving on the highest court in North Carolina is scary," state Republican party chairman Ferrell Blount said Tuesday. Blount's comments came after Hunter, a former Republican running as a Democrat, used the title "Dur Fuhrer" -- commonly associated with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler...

Candidate for high court puts Robinson at a loss for wordsBy Scott Sexton JOURNAL COLUMNIST Thursday, June 8, 2006 Other than the good folks at the League of Women Voters and trial lawyers, who really knows anything about candidates for the N.C. Supreme Court? The answer, sadly, is not many of us. There is one candidate who is out to change all that - but not in a good way. The campaign antics of one Rachel Lea Hunter, a lawyer from Cary, are changing the perception of staid, nonconfrontational judicial races. She is running against Associate Justice Mark Martin for...

Vernon Robinson, the provocative former Winston-Salem city councilman who is an outspoken critic of illegal immigration, is once again an issue in Tuesday's Republican primary for the 13th Congressional District seat.Robinson is drawing criticism from his two primary opponents, who say his reliance on hotbutton issues and his slashing style are likely to hurt Republican efforts to take the House seat held by Democrat Brad Miller of Raleigh. The district runs from Raleigh, up along the Virginia border, and back down into Greensboro.John Ross Hendrix, a graphic artist from Cary, and Charlie Sutherland, a Rockingham County soap manufacturer, say Robinson's brand...

On Keith Olbermann's Countdown tonight, out of the blue he bashes 13th NC Congressional District Vernon Robinson's ad entitled "Twilight Zone".....except that the ad in question ran in Robinson's last race for Congress in 2004. Not quite sure what has prompted Keith's interest in the ad..... The blurb that Keith ran can be found here: http://www.canofun.com/cof/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=17659 The clip linked above doesn't show the end of the segment when Olbermann bets five dollars that the ad is a spoof and probably never ran. In fact, the ad ran in a heavy, heavy media buy in North Carolina in 2004.

Vernon Robinson's quest to become a congressman took an unusual turn yesterday as the filing deadline for local, state and congressional elections expired. Robinson dropped his plan to challenge seven-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Mel Watt, a Democrat and the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, in the 12th Congressional District and instead switched his filing to run in the 13th District, which is represented by Brad Miller, a Democrat.

The Honorable Vernon Robinson Winston-Salem City Councilman (R-NC) (1997-2005) Former Business Professor USAF Missile Combat Crew Commander & Intelligence Officer (1977-1990) Dear Concerned Citizen of the Republic, I came very close to winning a seat in Congress in 2004 thanks to the support of thousands of party leaders, activists and average citizens like you. Obviously, financial support was critical to my strong showing in the race, but I can't tell you how important...

GOP re-elects chair, ending fears of clash Delegates' overwhelming vote for Ferrell Blount repels challenge from conservative MARK JOHNSON Raleigh Bureau ASHEVILLE - N.C. Republicans weren't so divided after all. Delegates to the GOP's state convention overwhelmingly re-elected Pitt County farmer Ferrell Blount to a second term as chairman Saturday. The vote repelled a challenge from Vernon Robinson, a blunt-spoken conservative city councilman from Winston-Salem and self-described "black Jesse Helms." Blount was winning by a 3-to-1 margin midway through the roll-call vote when Robinson interrupted and asked to elect Blount by acclamation. The delegates obliged. Linda Daves of Mecklenburg...

Rep. Trent Franks, 47, works out of his office in the Longworth Building just south of the Capitol, where a bust of Lincoln and a small statuette titled "Jesus With Children" are on display. From that small office is coming legislation that could free thousands and then millions of children from bondage to public schools harmful to their educational health. Franks, a second-term congressman from Arizona, pushed through his state legislature in 1997 the Arizona Scholarship Tax Credit Bill. That law allows Arizona taxpayers to receive up to a $500 dollar-for-dollar state income tax credit when they make private, voluntary...

With U.S. Rep. Richard Burr retiring from the House to run for U.S. Senate, the conservative 5th district of North Carolina sports an open seat. Political legacies, millionaire businessmen, and incumbent politicians all declared their intention to run for the Republican nomination. The race quickly became one of the most contested in the nation. Many candidates distinguished themselves. Businessmen Jay Helvey and Nathan Tabor both drew considerable attention and are likely to seek high office again. However, most pundits narrowed the field to three likely contenders. For some time, the campaigns of businessman Ed Broyhill (son of former U.S. Sen....

This is an interesting revelation. Foxx has claimed to have consistently maintained conservative positions. One wonders whether she will show consistency with her past or explain why she has different core principles now that she is running for congress in the conservative NC5 district.

There's a race afoot in the 5th Congressional District of North Carolina, and it isn't to see who makes the U.S. Olympic track and field squad. It's to see who goes to Washington – conservative Republican Vernon Robinson or American Civil Liberties Union liberal Republican Virginia Foxx. For the sake of North Carolina – and the tradition of the no-nonsense, protect your children and community, let the police do their jobs and we have a right to put the Ten Commandments where we want former Representative Jesse Helms – I hope Robinson wins. There are three key areas that would...

“A struggle is underway for the soul of the Republican Party between a minority of protectionist xenophobes and those who are pro-trade and pro-immigration.” Thus does Jack Kemp begin a column in which he jettisons the black conservative running for Congress in North Carolina whom he earlier endorsed. Kemp accuses Vernon Robinson of “running a very negative and aggressive anti-immigration campaign ... contrary to the core values of the party of Lincoln.” Jack is right about that struggle for the soul of the party. But why is it necessary to demonize disagreement? Webster’s defines xenophobia as “fear and hatred of...

BANNER ELK, NC (Talon News) -- Last month, Talon News reported on the candidacy of Vernon Robinson, a conservative black Republican running for the 5th Congressional District seat in North Carolina in 2004. In continuing coverage, Talon News recently spoke with candidate Virginia Foxx in an exclusive interview. In a positive, calm manner, Foxx says she realizes criticisms levied against her from other candidates vying for the congressional seat are all a part of the "dirty process" of running for political office. "This is one of the most painful things about politics," Foxx told Talon News. "However, I believe that...

Black Conservative Tops North Carolina Primary by John Gizzi Posted Jul 26, 2004 Vernon Robinson, a black conservative graduate of the Air Force Academy who serves as a Winston-Salem alderman, was top vote-getter in the first round of the Republican primary in North Carolina's 5th Congressional District. Robinson, who pulled 24%, now faces an August 17 runoff with State Sen. Virginia Foxx, who pulled 21%. Robinson was the most conservative candidate in the field. Robinson has said he is proud his voting record has infuriated "government bureaucrats and the tax-and-spend junkies who create their jobs," and has characterized his agenda...

One of the year's biggest political surprises came in Tuesday's North Carolina Republican primary, when black City Councilman Vernon Robinson of Winston-Salem finished first in the primary for a heavily Republican district's congressional seat. "Jesse Helms is Back. This Time, He's Black" was the title of a critical editorial in the Winston-Salem Journal, but Robinson has used it as his slogan. One of his radio ads called on African Americans to "stay in school, speak English and get a job." Another ad attacked illegal immigrants, contending "they commit crimes but won't commit to learn our language." Robinson will run against...

Robinson, Foxx to compete in runoff for Burr's seat By PAUL NOWELL Associated Press Writer WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After months of vicious personal attacks and all-out politicking, Republican voters in the 5th Congressional District can expect four more weeks of the same, as Vernon Robinson and Virginia Foxx advanced to an Aug. 17 runoff from an eight-person field. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., June 25 (UPI) -- A North Carolina Republican congressional candidate's anti-immigration stance has cost him the backing of former U.S. Housing Secretary Jack Kemp. Kemp, who is known for his efforts to persuade minorities to join the GOP, had been supporting Winston-Salem City Councilman Vernon Robinson's bid to become the first black Republican in the U.S. House from the South since Reconstruction. He ended that support, the Winston-Salem Journal reported Friday, because Robinson has been "running as a Pat Buchanan Republican" on the immigration issue. Buchanan is considered by many to be the leader of the anti-immigrant wing...

ATLANTA (AP) -- Herman Cain is a well-to-do black businessman with a strong belief that the Democratic Party that blacks embraced during the civil rights struggle has swung too far to the left. More black Republicans are running for office in Georgia this year than ever before, and black candidates in other Southern states are also finding that declaring for the GOP is more accepted than it was just a few years ago.
