And just think…. It was only a few short hours ago that far left Wisconsin candidate JoAnne Kloppenburg declared victory in the state’s Supreme Court race. Now this. Watch the first 36 seconds of her victory speech if you want a good laugh. [Video] From the video: Question: "How do you feel comfortable declaring victory when the margin is so thin? Justice Prosser’s supporters seem to think that they may be able to pull out a victory in a recount process." Kloppenburg: "You know, we ran a campaign that was focused on being positive and respectful and winning and we...

Today, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, appeared at an event hosted at Boise State University in Idaho. His appearance was part of nationwide effort, entitled “Conversation with the Country”, which is intended to strengthen community support for veterans. I was able to attend the townhall where Adm. Mullen made brief remarks and then invited audience members to ask questions not only related to veteran services but also national security matters. The main theme of his prepared remarks centered on the reintegration of our veterans into their communities and the need for support systems to aid...

Texas Rep. Ron Paul has won the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) 2012 presidential preference straw poll of 3,742 activists, the chairman of the huge annual gathering of conservative activists announced on Saturday. The poll, sponsored this year for the first time by The Washington Times, is seen as one of the earliest tests of grassroots popularity among the party’s dominant conservative wing, and Mr. Paul, who ran unsuccessfully for the nomination in 2008, has traditionally done well in the CPAC voting. The Republican lawmaker, long a favorite of the party’s libertarian wing, took 30 percent of the votes cast,...

The Federal Reserve's massive money-printing campaign of the last two years has had one central goal: Make sure the U.S. doesn't lead the global economy into the black hole of deflation. It may be time to declare "mission accomplished." Around the world, many countries aren't confronted with the debilitating forces of deflation, or falling prices and wages, but the opposite — inflation. Rising prices, particularly for food, have fueled credit-tightening moves by China, India, Brazil, Australia and other nations in recent months. Even in Europe, where a government-debt crisis is a serious drag on overall economic growth, annualized inflation in...

THERE are many theories for why very conservative Republicans seem to be doing so well lately, taking their party’s Senate nominations in Florida, Kentucky and Utah, and beating Democrats head-to-head in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia. Some attribute this to a generalized anti-incumbent mood. Others say it reflects the tendency of parties in power to falter in midterm elections. Recently it has been fashionable to ascribe right-wing success to the Tea Party movement. But the most obvious explanation is the one that’s been conspicuously absent from the gusher of analysis. Republican success in 2010 can be boiled down to two...

NJ school cancels cross-dressing fashion show after complaints Last Updated: 1:04 PM, April 13, 2010 Posted: 1:03 PM, April 13, 2010 A school superintendent in New Jersey said a "misunderstanding" led an elementary school teacher to mandate that all students -- including young boys -- dress as women in a now-canceled fashion show to honor Women's History Month, reported Tuesday. "I wish the letter had been clearer and had been worded differently," Maple Shade Township School Superintendent Michael Livengood told, referring to a letter sent home to the children's parents last week informing them of the assignment. "But...

He might not have planned it that way, but the timing of Rep. Bart Stupak's (D-Mich.) retirement announcement will send it into the annals of tea party history. Local groups and the national Tea Party Express had battered Stupak all week, holding rallies and running an estimated $250,000 of TV ads against the congressman.

BAGHDAD—Despite a spasm of violence early Sunday, Iraqis flocked to the polls in what appeared to be large numbers, in a hard fought and too-close-to-call parliamentary election representing a pivotal test of the country's fledgling democracy. A series of morning attacks cast an early pall over the day, as insurgents made good on threats to disrupt polling. At least 31 Iraqis died in dozens of mostly small attacks around the country as the voting began. The violence subsided by late morning without the sort of high-profile attacks that have shook the capital in recent months, killing in some cases more...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran on Sunday launched a new production line of highly accurate, short range cruise missiles capable of evading radar, state TV reported. The report quoted Iranian defense minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi as saying that the Nasr 1 (Victory) would be capable of destroying targets up to 1,000 tons in size. The missile can be launched from the surface but would eventually be modified to be fired from helicopters and submarines, he said.

March 1, 2010 ‘Invincible’ Taleban routed in raids on border camps Anthony Loyd in Peshawar Significant leaders of the Pakistani Taleban have been killed or captured in an onslaught of frontier ground and air attacks, a Pakistani general has told The Times. “The militant command and control centres and their caches have been dismantled or captured,” said Major-General Tariq Khan, one of the country’s most experienced commanders in the frontier war with the Taleban. “The kind of hits the leadership has taken, the casualties they have taken, the TTP [Pakistani Taleban] is no longer significant,” he said. “It has ended...

If you would like a graphic (literal and figurative) demonstration of our nation's greatest failing, sit in front of your television set and watch NBC cover an international sports event, the Winter Olympics, as if only Americans were participating. Every time the Today show's Meredith Vieira stumbles over the name of the Russian figure skater Yevgeny Plushenko (it's pronounced exactly as it's spelled, Meredith, with the accent on the second syllables) and giggles to show that it's OK to be ignorant, I think about all of the announcers from Canada and Europe who pronounce everyone's name correctly. Their employers care...

I am not naive. I understand that there are individuals who opposed the war in Iraq from the very beginning and I believe their passion, although misguided at times, is rooted in a deep desire for peace. What always baffled me was the reaction they had to pro-victory veterans when we came home. As if we were some robotic arm of the Bush White House. It was foreign for them to understand why winning in Iraq was so important. Our friends died in this cause. There is no honor in their death unless we complete the mission they died fighting.

It’s fascinating to watch the world try to turn the Dubai assassination into a debacle for Israel — all because the team members were captured on CCTV and the British and Irish authorities are making a momentary stink about the use of forged British and Irish passports. You, the reader of this post, will be captured on CCTV a dozen times today simply going about your business. The people calling the operation “sloppy” and a “debacle” seem to actually believe that the Mossad is unaware that there are video cameras in airports and hotels today, or that the passport photos...
  • Victory — How Quaint an Idea! (We can win the War on Terror, and sooner than you think)

Defeating Islamic terrorism is not only definable and possible, but closer than ever before. There is a common — and understandable — perception in the postmodern age of nuclear proliferation that victory is an obsolete concept. Is it that too many nuclear players have provided too many eleventh-hour reprieves to the losing sides in conventional wars? Or is it the non-uniformed status of our increasingly common terrorist enemies? Or perhaps the “ends” of wars seem inconsequential because of the ubiquity of terrorism and unconventional tactics, the mess of post-battle reconstruction and nation-building, and the power of instant global communications that...
