An executive for one of the nation's leading evangelical groups says in a video voter guide that Mitt Romney has "acknowledged Mormonism is not a Christian faith," although the GOP presidential candidate has said he follows Jesus Christ and his church insists it is Christian. Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action, said in an interview Friday that the comment was his interpretation of Romney's December "Faith in America" speech that was meant to reassure voters about his religion. EL CAJON, Calif. (National Catholic Register) – The 2006 version of Catholic Answers Action’s Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics became available in late July. Like the previous version distributed in the 2004 election cycle, the 16-page guide identifies five “non-negotiable” issues that Catholic Answers says should take precedence when Catholics are deciding how to vote. The issues are abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning and homosexual “marriage” – all of which must be universally opposed by the Catholic voter. “On most issues that come before voters or legislators, the task is selecting the most effective policy to implement or...

His son's arrived in an Asian language. And Rogers can't borrow his wife's -- she never got one. ``I like to have a pamphlet and sit and read. I study it for about a month before I make up my mind,'' the Sunnyvale homeowner said of the booklet that details candidates' statements and proposition arguments. ``It's really inconvenient to have something you can't understand.'' It wasn't clear Friday how widespread the...

"These five current issues concern actions that are intrinsically evil and must never be promoted by the law. Intrinsically evil actions are those that fundamentally conflict with the moral law and can never be deliberately performed under any circumstances. It is a serious sin to deliberately endorse or promote any of these actions, and no candidate who really wants to advance the common good will support any action contrary to the non-negotatiable principles involved in these issues."

Why is Bush getting the bishop's blessing? Thursday, October 14, 2004 NEWARK'S ARCHBISHOP John Myers wrote an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal last month on why Catholics cannot in good conscience vote for a pro-choice candidate. It was titled "A Voter's Guide."Myers wrote that abortion and research that destroys human embryos are evil and that no other issue outweighs that evil in this presidential race: not the death penalty, poverty, or the war in Iraq. The archbishop did not name names, but his message is clear: Catholics can't vote for John Kerry. Since Catholics make up one-quarter of the...

WASHINGTON - The Christian Coalition is distributing 30 million voter guides that use conservative catch-phrases such as "unrestricted abortion on demand" and "affirmative action programs that provide preferential treatment" in detailing the positions of the two presidential candidates. The guides will be distributed nationally starting Thursday, handed out in churches, at shopping malls and at other public locations. The coalition has been producing the guides since 1992. Roberta Combs, coalition president, said the guides were an attempt to educate voters and "I don't think the wording is loaded at all." The description of the guides as "nonpartisan" was questioned by...

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites)'s campaign criticized a new Democratic effort to get out the religious vote for John Kerry (news - web sites) on Friday, saying it could endanger churches' tax-exempt status by involving them in partisan political activity. The Democrats said changes would be made. A Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) Web site launched this week encouraged Kerry supporters to download, print and distribute a DNC "Kerry/Bush Values Comparison Chart" to church groups and at churches. The chart opens with the statement "John Kerry Shares Our Values." "Share it with your pastor and...

HOUSES OF WORSHIP A Voter's GuidePro-choice candidates and church teaching.BY ARCHBISHOP JOHN J. MYERSFriday, September 17, 2004 12:01 a.m. EDT Amid today's political jostling, Catholic citizens are wondering whether they can, in conscience, vote for candidates who support the legalized killing of human beings in the embryonic and fetal stages of development by abortion or in biomedical research. Responding to requests to clarify the obligations of Catholics on this matter, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome, under its prefect, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, released a statement called "On Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion." Although it dealt primarily...

Using Church documents, Catholic Answers has written a guide citing "Five Non-Negotiable Issues" for Catholic voters. "These five current issues concern actions that are intrinsically evil and must never be promoted by the law," says the guide. We used the guide as a starting point to compare each candidate’s positions.1. Abortion The Church teaches that, regarding a law permitting abortions, it is "never licit to obey it, or to take part in a propaganda campaign in favor of such a law, or to vote for it" (Evangelium Vitae, The Gospel of Life, No. 73). President Bush signed into law the...

Dear Colleague, Today we report on a popular voter guide published by the group Catholic Answers that focuses exclusively on the life issues, along with marriage. Catholic dioceses report that the guide has met resistance from the lawyers of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Do they fear that the IRS will come after dioceses for distributing it? Or is it that the anwers too clearly favor the Republican? Spread the word.
