  • Groups suing to block state funds for private schools

    DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Public school advocates are suing to block the state of Michigan from helping private schools with the cost of complying with state requirements such as immunization reporting and safety drills. The lawsuit will be filed later Tuesday in the Court of Claims. The Michigan Association of School Boards and groups representing school administrators and others said at a news conference that spending $2.5 million in the current state budget on nonpublic schools is unconstitutional.
  • Vanity - How do I get involved with lobbying for vouchers and charter schools?

    I have a special needs daughter who excelled after going to private school. We would have loved financial help in any form to help pay for her schooling and therapy. She went from below grade level in reading in 3rd grade to above grade level in 2 years using an Orton-Gillingham based multi-sensory reading program. I would love to use her as an example of how vouchers could help students. I would live to testify about how damaging public school was to her (pulling her from recess, not remediating her reading just dumbing down the work). Any ideas how I...

    In a tizzy after Betsy DeVos was confirmed as President Trump’s Sec. of Education, liberals on Twitter started considering the merits of homeschooling for the first time. The irony of invoking the freedom to choose where their kids go to school as a way to protest a pro-school choice Sec. of Education seemed lost on them. {..snip..}

    In its coverage of the U.S. Senate confirmation hearing on President-elect Donald Trump's pick for education secretary, The New York Times’ headline read: “Betsy DeVos’s Education Hearing Erupts Into Partisan Debate.” To understand how politics took center stage in a hearing about education requires understanding the influence unions have on elections and the interests that Democratic politicians support. State and national public school employee unions have been among the most vocal critics of DeVos’s nomination because of her long history of supporting school choice. In addition to enabling parents to choose their own children’s educational path, choice undercuts the financial...

    We Urge Members to Hear Our Voices. However painful 2016 was, a new year offers a fresh start.  This year, we will take nothing for granted.  The challenges we will inevitably face may mean that we can see new strategies and new solutions that would have eluded us in the past.  2017 marks the start of the 115th Congress, and we’re reaching out to members of Congress to encourage them to approach the unfolding year with a different perspective, too. We’re asking them to put families ahead of partisan politics and renew America’s commitment to public education so that all students, regardless...

    “We’re not going to hurt the people who have been paying into Social Security their whole life,” Trump declared, calling the payment of promised benefits “honoring a deal.” But the man heading the Trump transition team’s Social Security effort? Michael Korbey, a former lobbyist who has spent much of his career advocating for cutting and privatizing the program, according to Yahoo News. “It’s a failed system, broken and bankrupt,” Korbey said as a lobbyist in the mid 1990s. Korbey acknowledged that some of the reforms his group backed would hurt retirees, but “our constituents aren’t just senior citizens,” he told...

First, the student must come from a family whose income is...
  • Our Most Divisive Political Issue

    Can you name the most contentious issue in American politics? Here's a hint. It's being fought at the federal, state and local levels. And it doesn't go away. The struggle is persistent, ongoing, unending. Here is a second hint. The issue is not gay marriage, or gun control, or police brutality and or immigration. Those issues are either settled, largely settled, isolated or completely out of the control of local and state governments. Here is a third hint. The issue divides Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals. But it is especially divisive among Democrats and among people who call themselves...

    It turns out that American students have something in common with their Latin American counterparts: They don’t learn anything good about America either. “In Latin America children are often exposed to the negative aspects of American history but are seldom exposed to the negative aspects of their own history,” Alejandro Chafuen of the Atlas Economic Research Foundation said at the Philadelphia Society’s regional meeting in Indianapolis last weekend. Chafuen himself hails from Argentina. “In Argentina, at least before the Falklands War, we used to say that we act Italian, speak Spanish and think that we are British.” One-sixth of the...

    In January 2015, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) has introduced the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Individuals and Communities through Education (CHOICE) Act, designed to make vouchers more widely available to the poor so they can go to private or charter schools. “This pilot program would cost $10 million, and we’ve already paid for it,” said the Republican senator, “For those states that already have options, we are not dictating or mandating anything on any state, we are saying, here is another weapon in your arsenal to help those kids who are especially vulnerable to not seeing their full potential realized.”...

    As Saddam Hussein pressed the United Nations oil-for-food relief program for more money that he used to buy banned weapons, an unwitting ally may have been the American driver. Almost until the eve of the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, American oil companies were among the largest purchasers of Iraqi crude oil. The role that the companies, including ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco, played in the oil-for-food program is now coming under greater scrutiny in the wake of a report by the chief arms inspector for the Central Intelligence Agency that disclosed how extensively Mr. Hussein was abusing profits from the...

    I just read from 9News.com that the Colorado Supreme Court has just ruled against the voucher program in Douglas County School district. While I am disapointed in this ruling, it is technically correct. The Colorado Constitution states in Article IX, section 7: Aid to private schools, churches, sectarian purpose, forbidden. Neither the general assembly, nor any county, city, town, township, school district or other public corporation, shall ever make any appropriation, or pay from any public fund or moneys whatever, anything in aid of any church or sectarian society, or for any sectarian purpose, or to help support or sustain...

    Racine — A few short months ago, the newest proposed expansion site for HOPE Christian Schools, a rapidly expanding voucher- and charter-school network based in Milwaukee, was on the ropes. Gov. Scott Walker's state budget introduced in February proposed an expansion of the statewide voucher school program, but the per-pupil payments from taxpayers to new schools, such as the planned HOPE Via on Racine's north side, would have dropped from current levels. "We could have maybe made it a year or two, but no more," said Andrew Neumann, the head of the parent nonprofit that runs HOPE. Today, that budget...

    What is the Wisconsin Legislature trying to do to public education in Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s state? State Superintendent Tony Evers has gone on record accusing lawmakers of moving toward new legislation “that erodes the basic foundation of Wisconsin’s public school system.” How? By legislature efforts that include refusing to spend more money on public education for the first time in more than 20 years while while giving millions of dollars more to expand a private voucher program, slashing higher education funding, and weakening licensing rules for teachers.

    NEW ORLEANS — The American Federation for Children, which wants a dramatic expansion of charter schools and voucher programs, picked a boxing theme for its annual policy summit this week. Red boxing gloves became table centerpieces at the opening lunch Monday. Panel titles included "Knocking out yesterday's education models" and "Training parents to win the fight." And the first keynote speaker was Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a likely Republican presidential contender who is best known for aggressively fighting and weakening his state's education labor unions..... ....Wisconsin is home to the nation's first modern voucher system. The state adopted legislation in...
