To Set The Record Straight, first pubished in 2008, is much more than a history of the 2004 presidential race, and the effects the Swiftboat veterans had on that campaign. TSTRS uses the Swiftboat veterans' story to focus upon the role the mainstream media has played in shaping American public opinion over the past forty years, from the Vietnam War until the recent past. When Senator Kerry decided to make his military record a central part of his campaign, the Swiftboat veterans who knew him the best were angered and sickened. They had had enough, and they decided literally to...

Kerry draws on '71 Vietnam testimony in asking current vets to speak @ 11:43 am by Michael O'Brien Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.) is drawing on his own background as a Vietnam War protester in inviting veterans of the war in Afghanistan to testify in front of the committee this week. "One of the lessons that I learned a long time ago and lived out here was that it's important to listen to the troops, it's important to listen to the folks who are implementing these policies and putting their lives at risk," Kerry told National Public...

John Kerry, from his book, The New Soldier: "We will not quickly join those who march on Veterans' Day waving small [American] flags, calling to memory those thousands who died for the 'greater glory of the United States.'..." "The John Kerry quote comes in the epilogue to "The New Soldier," the book put out [in 1971] by Vietnam Veterans Against the War [VVAW]. The book's cover features a group of not-particularly sober-looking anti-war protesters (vets, presumably) flying the American flag upside down [while mocking the historic flag raising event at Iwo Jima]":http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1203164/posts_____________________________________________________________ Note John Kerry's name at top right of...

With all the turmoil in financial markets in the wake of a defeated federal government bailout package, hyperbole is running at high levels. Take former presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. Kerry appeared on FOX News Channels Sept. 29 The OReilly Factor and commended House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., for her efforts garnering Democratic votes in the House. He lambasted the Republicans members for not voting yes on the proposed $700 billion bailout. Let me tell you something. She [Pelosi] summoned a supermajority, Kerry said. Sixty percent plus voted for this. The Republicans had a super-supermajority almost veto proof...

That which is old, is new again On January 31, 1971, members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) met in a Detroit hotel to discuss war crimes they claimed to have participated in or witnessed during their combat tours in Vietnam. During the next three days, more than 100 Vietnam veterans and 16 civilians gave anguished, emotional testimony describing hundreds of atrocities against innocent civilians in South Vietnam, including rape, arson, torture, murder, and the shelling or napalming of entire villages. The witnesses stated that these acts were being committed casually and routinely, under orders, as a matter of...

Re: "swiftboating" From StreetInsider.com, July 3, 2008: "The 'Swiftboating' slogan is used by leftist politicians and members of the old media to smear the Swift Vets and other anti-Kerry veterans as liars. The truth is that they were effective because they supported their charges with evidence. A second goal of this tactic is to preempt any criticism of Sen. Obama and the other Democrats they are trying to elect - however accurate and relevant such criticism may be," said Scott Swett, the primary author of To Set the Record Straight. For those who havent heard, IVAW will be presenting materials from their Winter Soldier investigation to the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) next Thursday (May 15). Ive created another petition asking the CPC to verfiy any info that IVAW brings to them. This petition reads about the same as the petition that was circulated for the Senate Armed Services Committee. The CPC is more of an ad-hoc group than any sort of official committee, but since weve been out in front of IVAW on this, we should probably stay there. Please circulate this petition among your mailing lists. Ill be doing...

An organization calling itself Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) convened a conference in Silver Spring, Maryland, entitled Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan — Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupations, this month. Modeling itself on the 1971 Winter Soldier Investigation (WSI), which provided the text for John Kerry’s infamous testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee later that year, the event claimed to “feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in [the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan], giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground.” But in the immortal words of Yogi...

"The most dramatic testimony out of the IVAW's Winter Soldier II hearings is that American troops are using bullets in Iraq!" Col. Harry Riley, US Army, Retired, at Eagles Muster, Washington, D.C., May 15, 2008. There is a saying that sunlight is the strongest disinfectant. That was certainly the case this past weekend in the Washington, D.C., area when American veterans and troop supporters gathered to counter the Iraq Veterans Against the War's ill-conceived Winter Soldier II "hearings" at the National Labor College in Silver Springs, Maryland. The original Winter Soldier "investigation" was a farce put together by John Kerry's...

Hot Air TV: Sen. John Kerry confronted about Winter Soldier II By Michelle Malkin March 12, 2008 11:12 PM Grab the popcorn. Weve got another joint YAF/Hot Air TV production for you, just in time for the anti-war confab known as Winter Soldier II that kicks off in Washington, D.C. tomorrow and runs through Sunday. YAFs Jason Mattera, our intrepid special correspondent who cornered Jack Murtha in September, is back in the halls of Congress. This week, Jason caught up with the original Winter Soldier, Sen. John Kerry, and confronted him about his unsubstantiated, troop-smearing testimony. Jason also tried...

Does Congress want to take an Easter break? The American People have used many different tactics to try to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have camped outside the Bush Ranch in an attempt to get a conference with the president. He refused to meet with them. The people have petitioned Congress and even changed its balance of power. Still, Congress votes to continue funding the wars, and on the fifth anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War which has killed almost 4,000 Americans and over a million Iraqis, Congress plans to be on vacation. Except that a...

Last Monday morning (Feb 25) Scott Swett’s timely article “Newly Discovered Army Reports Discredit ‘Winter Soldier’ Claims” on the discovery of the summary files of the Army CID Investigations of VVAW War Crimes Allegations from the 1971 Winter Soldier Investigation was published at FrontPageMag.com. By late that evening, at the suggestion of a friend, I had gotten the on-line petition entitled “Appeal to the Senate Armed Service Committee” up, and it has been there for less than two full days. Many of the hundreds of signatories have made comments. Many of those show how truly appalled people are that the...

If John Kerry had been elected President of the United States in November 2004, especially with the incoming majority Democrat Congress, it is highly likely that Iraq would be in the midst of a civil war, Irans regional influence would have increased, Israel would be in more jeopardy than it is now, two Supreme Court seats would be occupied by clones of John Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg instead of by John Roberts and Samuel Alito, judicial decisions would have given even more rights to enemy combatants, domestic entitlements and earmarks would have skyrocketed, the Bush tax cuts would be...

It may be Providential that a book of history is soon to be released dealing extensively with certain shameful events of nearly four decades ago, just as others are now seeking to shamelessly and eagerly repeat those events. SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 29 (OneWorld) - U.S. war veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have announced they're planning to descend on Washington, DC this March to testify about war crimes they committed or personally witnessed in Iraq. "The war in Iraq is not covered to its potential because of how dangerous it is for reporters to cover it," said Liam Madden, a former Marine and member of the group Iraq Veterans Against the War. "That's left a lot of misconceptions in the minds of the American public about what the true nature of military occupation looks like." Iraq Veterans Against the...

As I said at the GOE rally, the Iraq Veterans Against The War are out to smear this generation of military as "babykillers" the way their mentors the Vietnam Veterans Against the War did during the Vietnam era. But I never expected that they'd give away their intent by calling it "Winter Soldier" just like their mentors. Winter Soldier was a series of 109 interviews that were turned into a book and film. According to B.G. Burkett's investigation of Winter Soldier in his book Stolen Valor, many were phony soldiers that never served, others like VVAW leader Al Hubbard served...

Road to MoscowBill Clintons Early Activism from Fulbright to Moscow By Fedora SummaryDuring the 1992 campaign, Bill Clintons student protests and Moscow trip generated much controversy, but few answers. While Clintons government files from that era seemingly remain unavailable even today, there is at least more information available than in 1992. The public record reveals that Clintons social network and views on Vietnam were influenced by a pattern of contact between Communist agents and sympathizers and Clintons academic and political associates. This pattern is documented here through an analysis of Clintons antiwar activity up through the time he left Oxford...

Sept. 13 issue - John Kerry wanted to hit back. It had been a miserable August as he took incoming fire about his military service from a gang of hostile Vietnam vets. But no, campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill and other staffers argued, the Swift Boat ads would blow over. Finally, Kerry had had enough. For three or four days, as he campaigned across the country, Kerry ripped into Cahill, furious that the mostly baseless attacks on his valor were driving his numbers down. "He was very angry," one old friend says. "The calculation had been made that this wasn't...

The FBI files on the VVAW reveal that on many occations the North Vietnamese Government would call the VVAW in the United States and advise them in advance about an upcoming NV attack on the South and US troops. In these contacts the NV would advise the VVAW leaders to start ramping up for anti-war protests because as soon as the NV invaded the South Nixon would start bombing the north. This is what allowed the VVAW and other anti-war groups to mount such large anti-war protests on what seemed to be very short notice, ie Nixon starts bombing and...

VVAW distributes literature at an event that is used to collect intelligence on military tactics and methods in Vietnam. Considering the fact that the VVAW has meetings with the North Vietnam Communists and VVAW members travel to Moscow and Hanoi, this is a very serious matter. VVAW collects military intelligence concerning US tactics and methods in Vietnam War.

John Kerry and Ned Lamonts Common AncestryCorliss Lamont and the VVAWBy Fedora When John Kerry threw his political machines fundraising support to Ned Lamont this week, he was in a sense returning a favor the Lamont family had once done for Kerrys old organization Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). Prior to Kerrys affiliation with that group, Ned Lamonts great-uncle Corliss Lamont and his great-aunt Helen had actually helped finance the creation of the VVAW in 1967. In August 1972, as US government prosecutors were preparing a case against VVAW members indicted in the Gainesville Eight case, FBI headquarters collected...

On August 8th, the Los Angeles Times published a long article in which Nick Turse and Deborah Nelson reported that Army investigators had substantiated 320 U.S. atrocities during the Vietnam War. It is not clear what the Times meant by "substantiated," since many of these investigations did not lead to criminal charges. It is also difficult to determine how many of the events, if confirmed, would qualify as war crimes, since Turse and Nelson did not distinguish between ordinary crimes by soldiers and military atrocities. The only "news" presented in the Times article was that documents on file in the...

PHILADELPHIA--Several Vietnam War veterans who sued over a documentary about Sen. John Kerry's anti-war activities have dropped their libel suits, leaving just one lawsuit pending over the controversial 2004 film. Filmmaker Carlton Sherwood says the outcome shows the suits were frivolous complaints filed by Kerry operatives to try to block the film's release in the final weeks of the presidential race. "We've always believed that Kerry controlled these lawsuits," Sherwood said Monday. He said the suits were dropped as depositions got under way. "We also felt we were getting a tad too close to the truth about Kerry."

A controversial documentary titled Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, about Sen. John F. Kerrys anti-Vietnam War activities in the 1970s that was released just before the 2004 presidential election sparked at least five politically charged lawsuits. Now theres only one. In recent weeks, lawyers for the plaintiffs have dropped three libel suits brought by anti-war veterans who said they were falsely portrayed in the film made by journalist Carlton Sherwood. Sherwood was also hit with a copyright infringement suit in New York that accused him of unfairly including clips from another film and photos from a book. But that...

Kerry has the opportunity to lead a movement once again... by rallying a very angry public to force a change in policy. Richard Nixon worried about Kerry's potential as a leader back in the 70s; maybe the new Kerry will finally prove him right.John Kerry came to national attention not because he was a war hero but because he was a dissenter. In 1971, he appeared on "The Dick Cavett Show," testified before Congress, and electrified anti-war rallies with his message that the war was wrong. On March 17, Media Life Magazine published an article about the difficulties facing the Washington Post, which recently announced that it would have to eliminate some eighty positions over the next year, or nearly 10% of its editors and reporters. Last week, John Walker Lindh petitioned the president to commute his 20-year sentence for fighting with the Taliban, imposed in 2002. Traitors of Record: The Record of the New York TimesBy Fedora . . .the most untrustworthy paper in the United States. . . --President Dwight Eisenhower, referring to the New York TimesIntroductionLast week Senator John Cornyn criticized the New York Times for endangering national security with a James Risen story on NSA surveillance timed to coincide with a vote on the Patriot Act and, incidentally, with the release of a book by Risen. Vietnam Veterans Bare Their Souls In a Searing '72 Documentary See "Winter Soldier." This extraordinary documentary, made in 1972 and having its first theatrical release, not only revisits events during the Vietnam War that have uncanny resonance today but also stands as a riveting example of pure filmic storytelling. An unadorned, black-and-white record of a three-day gathering held in Detroit in 1971, "Winter Soldier" turns the camera on the testimony of former soldiers invited by Vietnam Veterans Against the War to share accounts of atrocities they committed or witnessed. The result is a spellbinding film that achieves impressive power through...

OPINION - One of the few compensations of hitting deep middle age is that life leaves you with some experiences and with them, some perspective. Perspective, properly applied, equals judgment. That judgment is why old guys can sometime beat the young and exuberant. The news media gleefully reports that presidents poll numbers have collapsed and that Americans are becoming frustrated with the management of the war in Iraq. This has lured many reporters who do not have the benefit of middle-aged perspective, to conclude that there is a burgeoning anti-war movement. The problem with this is that when the network...

Winter Soldier is a documentary which one experiences, instead of simply viewing. Over three days in January and February 1971, just a couple months before Lieutenant William Calley would be sentenced to life in prison for the My Lai Massacre (he would eventually serve less than four years), a group of Vietnam War veterans convened at a Howard Johnson in Detroit to testify about the atrocities they had witnessed or partaken in while serving in Vietnam. Many argue that communism will never be possible because of "human nature". The essence of this false argument is the belief that a communist society would consist of an all-powerful central government that would tell everybody what to do--and would therefore undermine the creative initiative of individuals and the search for happiness. This argument is based on two false assumptions: (1) It assumes that a communist society will look like the former Soviet Union, or the current China, North Korea, etc (ie: corrupt police states with a feudal-style ruling class) (2) It assumes that people will only work in...
