  • GOP Front-Runner Compares Gay Marriage to Polygamy

    Mother Jones ^ | June 23, 2014 | Erika Eichelberger
Last week, a top GOP House candidate in Washington state compared gay marriage to polygamy. "Marriage is something more for religion to decide," Republican front-runner Pedro Celis said Thursday when asked about his stance on same-sex marriage at a GOP candidate forum, the Seattle Times reported. "Is this marriage or not? Polygamy—is it fine or not? It's a religion thing." The National Republican Congressional Committee has backed Celis, a former Microsoft engineer, to run against Democratic Rep. Suzan DelBene in Washington's first congressional district. DelBene is expected to hold onto her seat in November, but national Republicans are trying extra...

Republican John Koster, a candidate for Congress in the 1st District, received a $5,000 contribution from SarahPAC, the political organization headed by Sarah Palin. Koster is in a tight race with Democrat Suzan DelBene to represent the 1st District, a newly drawn swing district that runs from Redmond to the Canadian border. Palin endorsed Koster in 2010, when he ran against Democrat Rick Larsen. Koster’s far-right tea party ties have been a major talking point for the DelBene campaign, which has branded Koster “too extreme” for the 1st District. Koster’s campaign says DelBene is too liberal...

Senator Michael Baumgartner will suspend his campaign for US Senate for two days this week to travel to Georgia to advise an army battalion soon to deploy to Afghanistan. Baumgartner will lecture the 63rd Signals Battalion at Fort Gordon on counterinsurgency and the economy of Afghanistan. He will return to the campaign trail on Friday, June 8. “It’s a tremendous honor to be asked once again to help prepare our nation’s finest for the difficult challenges of fighting the war in Afghanistan,” Baumgartner said. Who will be on the ballot against Sen. Maria Cantwell a year from now? Maybe Michael Baumgartner. Haven't heard of him? He's from Spokane. He's not quite 36, one of four new Republican state senators elected in 2010. He stands out for several things. One is his victory a year ago over the incumbent, Chris Marr, in the most expensive such race in state history. It was big news in Spokane. "People said, 'You've been away. Nobody knows you,' " Baumgartner recalls. He had been away, and Marr tagged him as a carpetbagger. Baumgartner grew up in Pullman. His father...

Continuing an early trend in Washington's 2012 governor's race, a new Elway poll finds Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna with a 9-point lead over Democratic Congressman Jay Inslee. The poll, conducted last week, found 45 percent of respondents would "definitely" or "probably" vote for McKenna, compared with 36 percent for Inslee. Pollster Stuart Elway notes one "ominous" sign for Inslee in the poll data: the proportion of voters with a negative impression of him (22 percent) is nearly equal to those with a positive impression (28 percent). By contrast, McKenna has a 3 to 1 ratio of positive to negative...

In November, Accuracy in Media released my report regarding a company known as CH2M Hill, an engineering firm that claimed nearly $2 billion in stimulus awards. Most of their work concentrated on one division - the CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company (CHPRC) - which operated one of the world’s largest environmental cleanup projects—the Central Plateau on the Hanford Nuclear Site in Richland, Washington. New information shows that despite their claims, the Energy Department says the company actually received $1.38 billion from the stimulus, but had an additional $3.1 billion in annual budget appropriations. Furthermore, they are receiving $2 million in...

Members of the party’s state committee and the party’s county chairmen elected Wilbur at a meeting in Tukwila today, effectively unseating former Chairman Luke Esser. Wilbur collected 69 votes, while Esser, who had led the party since January 2007, received 36, said Peter Graves, the party’s political director. Bill Rennie of Puyallup received seven votes. “The state party spoke today and said they want a new direction for the state party. Liberals don’t like the filibuster. They want to rid the Senate of it in the next few weeks so newly re-elected Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) can exclude Republicans from all aspects of the legislative process. Conservatives should watch closely to see if Reid tries to exterminate the filibuster from the Senate rules without a fair vote. Conservatives need to fight any change of the filibuster rule. Without it, the Obama Administration and Sen. Reid will ignore the will of the American people. Reid and his allies will railroad through left-wing nominees to the courts and the executive branch—in...

    1. U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-5, WA) may try to mend the rift between Dino Rossi and Clint Didier by asking Sarah Palin to step in. (Palin, who has family in Eastern Washington, was an early Didier endorser.) McMorris Rodgers, one of the select “Mama Grizzlies”—a Sarah Palin-endorsed female candidate—became fast friends with Palin after they met at the GOP convention in Minneapolis in 2008. Highly placed sources have informed me that efforts are underway to have Sarah Palin intervene in the current squabble between former Washington U.S. Senate candidate Clint Didier and Republican Senate nominee Dino Rossi. Palin, if you recall, endorsed Didier just prior to Rossi’s entry into the race in May. SarahPAC gave Didier $5000 and Palin recorded a robo-call for Didier, but she did not campaign in the state for him. Didier has declined to endorse Rossi in the Senate race until Rossi agrees to meet three specific demands. Rossi has refused. Republican state party officials and electeds are busy behind...

Tuesday is primary day in Washington. Democratic Senator Patty Murray will get an assist from President Obama. He's scheduled to headline a fundraiser for her in Seattle. Meanwhile Sarah Palin is lending her voice to an underdog candidate. The President will make a whirlwind stop in Seattle – part of a five-state campaign and fundraising blitz for vulnerable Democrats. Murray is running for a fourth term in the U.S. Senate. An extra push is coming from Sarah Palin for the Didier for Senate campaign in Washington State in the last four days of the primary. About a half-million voters across the state will be getting a call from the former V.P. candidate urging them to vote for Clint Didier. Palin's May 21 endorsement of Didier was one of her earliest endorsements this campaign season, calling him a "selfless, inspiring commonsense constitutional conservative who will help put our country on the right track." Washington State Senator Don Benton dropped his bid for Senate in Washington Thursday, endorsing Dino Rossi as the Republican candidate best positioned to defeat Sen. Patty Murray. Benton, a 16-year legislator who used warm language to welcome Rossi to the race last week, said defeating Patty Murray would be extremely difficult following a closely contested Republican primary between "several well-qualified candidates." "Patty Murray has six million special interest dollars in the bank. To defeat her, we must consolidate our resources, and work together to put our country back on the right track. “A Michigan Impossible until we work together ending illegal state house electioneering practices” Joe Alloway-R Michigan House District 81 St. Clair County Michigan PORT HURON – JULY 11, 2004 - Please listen to a recent interview (http://66.92.134.175/~benburch/old/TrupianoShow-(10-5-2004).mp3) exposing Michigan’s #1 area to reform and that’s ending illegal activities in Michigan’s House Republican Caucus Communications Office! Very few citizens asked have no idea of what that word means. Folks, the bottom line is we’ve had some major problems in this antiquated, 50-person staffed office and they’re just coming public. Take recent revelations of state employees assigned to representatives as campaign managers...

I just got back last week from driving across the country, I live in Washington State and drove to PA in see my wifes family and took I-80 and I-90 back home. With my Bush/Cheney sticker from 2000 in my back window along with my W-04 sticker I got a aproviel rating of about 75% judging from the honks and thumbs ups from fellow drivers. Funny how I got the 1 finger salute from the folks with the Kerry stickers. My question to you is do you vent your hate and anger at fellow drivers on the road with a...

Last night, I was told that a report was recently published by some DC think-tank. This report ranked members of congress in order of taxpayer-friendliness, i.e. it examined their votes on tax-related bills and determined where any particular member of congress came in on higher or lower taxes for their constituents. The same person who told me about the report told me that a whopping 75% of house and senate members from my state were in the top 20 LEAST friendly to taxpayers in their voting records. Have any of you heard of this report? Can you point me to...

SEATTLE -- The photograph on the front page of Sunday's Seattle Times captured a moment rarely seen publicly since the start of the Iraq war. Coffins holding dead American soldiers, draped with U.S. flags and placed in rows, nearly filled a cargo plane for the journey home to the United States.

I've seen the senate races heating up, but not nearly as much on the house seats. I'm mostly using information from DC POLITICAL REPORT and POLITICS1. STATES Alabama DISTRICT 3 - The other Mike Rogers (R) won in 02 with 50.3% over Democrat Joe Turnham(48.2%) in an open seat. So far, it looks as he is facing Democrat Bill Fuller, Ex-State Human Resources Commissioner. I haven't heard much about this race, but the first defense is hardest. Alaska SENATE - Lisa Murkowski(R) vs Ex governor Tony Knowles. This will be a tough race as Knowles is an ex-governor and Murkowski...

Senate Races to Watch 2004 South Dakota- I expect this one to be a barnburner. Thune is back and now there is a third party candidate (Tim Giago) that leans towards Daschle’s ideology. The Indian reservations in SD have been a haven for democratic votes and Tim Johnson owes his re-election to them. But now that an Indian candidate has applied to run, the Democrats are in trouble here. I expect Bush to visit often and the Republicans to put great effort into this race. The only thing that bothers me is the Janklow factor. He has done some damage...
