NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actor Robert Wagner says he was so distraught over the break-up of his first marriage to actress Natalie Wood that he pondered suicide and would sit with a gun outside the home of her lover, Warren Beatty, intent on killing him. "Pieces of My Heart," Wagner's autobiography released this week, reveals details of his career and life, including the split with Wood, their decision to remarry a decade later and her drowning death in 1981. "I was pretty young, and I don't think I could have ever gone through with that act, but I was pretty...

In movies, a big star is insulated by protocol and precedence. Your big-time silver-screen colossus might get killed in a film, but not by the hands of some nondescript extra who casually shoots him with nary a thought. Alas, democratic politics aren't half so respectful of status: Last week Arnold Schwarzenegger got sand kicked in his face by millions of nondescript extras -- the California voters who rejected all four of the propositions he had backed. The Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan says "with each day a star is in politics he loses some of his star-glow, and if he...

OAKLAND, Calif. - Warren Beatty has a message for his old Hollywood pal, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger: it's nothing personal. "Arnold's always thinking about him, but I'm not," Beatty said in an interview Thursday night after he'd skewered Schwarzenegger in a speech to the California Nurses Association. "When I do think about him, I'm amused. I've always liked him. But I don't think he knows what he's doing." His wife, actress Annette Bening, agreed. "I think the special election is really dangerous," she said. "It's not personal, it's bigger than that. I don't see it as personal, and I don't think...

Actor Warren Beatty leveled a blistering political assault on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday night, accusing him of governing "by show, by spin, by cosmetics and photos ops." Beatty made his remarks at a convention of the California Nurses Association, an organization that has emerged in the last year as one of Schwarzenegger's most vociferous critics. Beatty, a Democrat and longtime political activist who has been mentioned as a possible challenger to Schwarzenegger next year, did not announce his candidacy as many in the boisterous crowd had hoped. But he indicated he hadn't ruled out a run, and said he...

"I see nothing wrong with Maria [Shriver] becoming a Republican. I'd say many of my best friends are Republicans," says Warren Beatty, Oscar-winning actor-director and liberal citizen-activist.....not really joking. .............. Though Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's poll numbers have been dropping thanks ................................................. ..................much like the candid candidate Jay Billington Bulworth from his 1998 political satire. He derided the governor for "his reactionary right-wing agenda," "his bullying of labor and the little guy," his plan to spend money on a "totally unnecessary special election" and his refusal to raise taxes on the rich. Beatty asked Schwarzenegger to "cut down the photo ops,...

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - Warren Beatty, an actor who has dabbled in politics across four decades, has some words of advice for fellow film star and now Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger should raise taxes on the California rich and "terminate" his fund-raising and dinners with "the brokers of Wall Street" and the "lobbyists of K Street," Beatty said. Receiving a political award Friday night, the actor who played Sen. Jay Billington Bulworth in the 1998 movie, "Bulworth," said: "Arnold. Be the action hero I know you can be. Be strong. Stand up and confront the wealthiest 1 percent of...

New York ON A THURSDAY they had the book party. It was a simple affair: just family, friends, coworkers, and journalists. They came to Ambassador Joseph Wilson's house, nestled in the ritzy Palisades neighborhood of Northwest Washington, to celebrate the release of his first book, The Politics of Truth. One thing Joe Wilson keeps track of is his "Notoriety Quotient," or the amount of attention he receives from the media. And that Thursday it seemed to be on the rise. For the past week The Politics of Truth was mentioned in the same breath as Ron Suskind's The Price of...

Acting Patriotic We often hear from the "anti-war" crowd that "dissent is what America is all about." That by protesting against the war, they are not "unpatriotic," rather, they are the "true patriots." Not to mention the pat on the back they give to themselves because of their "bravery." Bravery has many definitions, "The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding go out to meet it." – Thucydides. More to the point, "Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless...

More and more celebrities using fame to back causes 12/26/2002 Associated Press NEW YORK - From the moment Sean Penn arrived in Baghdad, eager to advance the cause of peace, he was doomed - a dead man talking. He was a celebrity, like so many other celebrities who have waded into the treacherous waters of politics or international relations. So he walked gingerly - he was there, he said, "to learn and not to teach." He avoided reporters. And he was careful not to say or do anything that would cause a meltdown at home. So the Iraqis did...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - Some of the biggest stars in Hollywood are urging Gov. Gray Davis to sign a bill that would help farmworkers get union contracts by allowing binding arbitration of farm labor disputes.
