Good morning gardeners. It has been another week of hot humid weather. My little garden got its small share of a 60% chance of rain yesterday afternoon. A nice pop up T-storm spent about half an hour dropping a nice steady rain on my garden. There is a 70% chance of rain today. If the percentage for rain is not above 50 the pop up T-storms seem to pass me by. I did get to harvest about a dozen ripe tomatoes this past week but they are on the small side. My replacement paste tomato plants are coming along just...

Good morning gardeners. I have been planting 2 zucchini plants every year I have had a garden and this year is the first year they have produced more than my wife and I can use. I think their production is due to the four-foot spacing between plants I gave them. I may be able to participate in the annual “leave a zucchini on your neighbor’s porch day” this year. It is on August 8th. I should be getting some ripe tomatoes soon; a few are developing a slight blush. Some netting will have to put up to protect them from...

Good morning gardeners. I hope your gardens are doing well. Mine is doing so-so as far as my tomatoes are concerned. A couple of tomatoes that I thought I would lose due to the heat have revived a bit and will survive because of the shade I have been providing in the afternoons. My new tomato seedlings are coming along great and need repotting very soon. I received a very nice quantity of Texas A&M yellow Jalapeno seed from Freeper Texas Fossil and plan to plant a couple today and see how they do. If you are a gardener or...

Good morning gardeners. Well this past week brought a respite from the sunny hot weather here in Mississippi. We received two days of beneficial rains, which helped to revive my garden. Watching the radar it looked like a good portion of south-central Texas from San Antonio to the northeast corner received some rain also. I hope it was helpful to our gardeners over that way. My winter squash are growing like mad and my hot and sweet peppers are doing great. What is left of my tomatoes seem to have revived a bit during these rainy and cloudy days. I...

Good morning gardeners. My tomato plants are struggling to survive these hot brutal sunny days. Their leaves are all curled up trying to save water. Temperatures are consistently in the mid to high 90s. My winter and summer squash along with all of my hot and sweet pepper plants are doing great. It does not look like any of my Opailka or Viva Italia paste tomatoes will make it through so I have restarted some more seeds in the hopes I can get them transplanted in time for a late harvest. I have about 4 Marion tomato plants that are...

Good morning gardeners. I lost a total of three of my Marion Tomato plants due to the heat this past week. The good news is that all my other plants are surviving this heat wave and a wonderful cooling T- storm visited my garden Wednesday afternoon dumping about ¾ of an inch of much-needed rain. Here in East Central Mississippi the forecast is for highs in the mid 90s with isolated thunderstorms for the next week. I am keeping my fingers crossed that one or two of them will pass over my garden. If you are a gardener or you...

Good morning gardeners. Here in East Central Mississippi the heat has arrived. It was 101 yesterday and is expected to be in the high 90s and pushing 100 for the next week. A heat advisory is effect. My garden is surviving these hot afternoons. Some of my younger plants have needed watering every afternoon. My established tomato, squash and pepper plants have been doing well with a deep soaking of water about every three days. Looks like it is going to be a hot summer. If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need...

Good morning gardeners. I apologize to all Freepers for the flame skirmish that occurred on the thread last week. This thread is intended to give like minded Freepers a place to share their gardening experiences and knowledge - a respite from the everyday problems we all encounter without encountering more on a benign gardening thread. Please be civil to your fellow gardeners, Thank You. Ok, back to gardening. Every one of my plants I started from seed are doing great! This includes two varieties of paste tomatoes and three varieties of winter squash and a few pepper plants. Unfortunately some...

Good morning gardeners. The past week here in East Central Mississippi has been beautiful with cool mornings and sunny moderate afternoons. It has been great weather and temperatures for a garden with young plants just starting out. I have been watering them with a solution of AlgoFlash and Sea Magic Seaweed and the plants are doing very well. Have any of you ever used a product called Humic acid along with your fertilization program? From what I have read it is supposed to help make the fertilizers more available to the plants. Good morning gardeners. I hope all of your gardens are doing well. Here in East Central Mississippi my garden is coming along very nicely. I have been worried about some of the very young plants because of steady hot sunny days this past week. The Weekly Gardening thread continues to grow. The thread currently has 452 members. Two to three additional FReepers are added each week. Now it is just a matter of watering and waiting for all the veggies to grow. Lets see I have Marion, Arkansas Traveler and a couple of verities of paste tomatoes, a couple of verities of winter squash, zucchini, egg plants, jalapeno and sweet peppers. Good morning gardeners. Well folks my garden soil finally dried out enough for me to get it all tilled and ready for planting but then that severe weather outbreak the other day delayed planting – the soil has been to wet and muddy. I bought a couple of bails of wheat straw yesterday to use as a mulch and cover for my landscape fabric. I may get the planting done today that is if my wife’s yard sale does not interfere. My PVC drip irrigation system has been working very well and I will be using it again this year....

Good morning gardeners. Today is NOT tax day! Y’all who file last minute can put it off until Monday the 18th. Why? In 2011, Washington, D.C., will celebrate Emancipation Day on April 15, a day earlier than normal, since April 16 falls on a Saturday. Emancipation Day marks the anniversary of the day that President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act. The Act, which was "for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia," freed 3,100 slaves in the District, making DC residents the "first freed" by the federal government. Good morning gardeners. It has been a rainy first part of the week with a little cooler weather following the rain here in Central Mississippi. We will be back into the low 70s for high temperatures for the next few days. I have been busy putting up a small 8’X 8’ shed in our back yard and running electricity to it. Good morning gardeners. It is finally March and in Central Mississippi it has come in like a Lamb so far, does that mean it will go out like a Lion? People used to believe that bad spirits could affect the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or did not do in certain situations. Those beliefs often included ideas that there should be a balance in weather and life. So, if a month came in bad (like a lion), it should go out good and calm (like a lamb). I am still waiting for my tomato...

Just when Entertainment Weekly seemed to be rolling the boulder back up the hill, Time Inc. told EW staff this morning that its publisher of the last two years, Ray Chelstowski, is leaving. Mr. Chelstowski informed Paul Caine, president and group publisher of the Style & Entertainment Group at Time Inc., that he has decided to leave EW, Mr. Caine said in a staff memo. No successor was named. "I will be communicating a plan shortly, and my door is open should you have any thoughts or suggestions," said Mr. Caine, himself a former EW publisher.

Cooler weather is setting in here in Central Mississippi and we have a freeze watch for this weekend with sunny days and highs in the low 60’s. This is good yard and lawn maintenance weather around here. I am mostly just gathering leaves and grass clippings for my compost pile and doing needed maintenance on vehicles. If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy...

Good morning gardeners. Finally, we have had few thunderstorms passing through the Central Mississippi area the last couple of days. We just caught the tail end of those huge storms that passed through the middle of the country. Not much going on in my garden. The broccoli and cabbage are doing well and enjoying the cooler weather. Good morning gardeners. I am convinced that to be a successful gardener I will have to be a little more stylish. No more four or five year old jeans and pocket T-shirts or sweatshirts. Oh, and no more beat up old scruffy tennis shoes or crumpled up baseball caps for me. This winter while perusing the seed catalogues I will also be flipping through a few fashion magazines for my new look!I may even get myself a Segway to get me up to the garden in style.Maybe a flute of champagne in the morning before heading out to pick peppers?  Hey...

Good morning gardeners. The weather continues to be beautiful here in Mississippi. We could really use some rain but there is none in the forecast. I removed my landscape fabric from my garden and distributed what was left of my mature compost pile on the garden a few days ago and added the straw that I use as a cover on top of the fabric to my new compost pile. If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly...

Good morning gardeners. It is October and here in Central Mississippi the weather has been perfect with cool mornings and moderate afternoons in the mid 80’s perfect weather for working outside. My newest compost pile has received a lot of yard and garden waste over the last few weeks and is cooking away nice and slowly. It will be used on my garden this spring. My mature compost pile will be added to my garden’s soil next week. Compost is excellent for building up and adding nutrients to you garden’s soil. If you are a gardener or you are just...

Good morning gardeners. It is officially Autumn. It started this past Wednesday with the autumnal equinox at 11:13 pm ET. The days will start to get shorter and shorter. If there's an Indian summer, there is no better time of year to be out in the garden and there are plenty of garden tasks to keep us all busy. I wish everyone with a fall garden a bountiful harvest. Good morning gardeners. I was hoping that I could nurse my tomato plants through to mid October but they really started to look bad and were not productive at all so I pulled them all from the garden a couple of days ago. My pepper plants are still doing well enough to keep them around for a few more weeks. I also have a bunch of broccoli and cabbage plants that are doing very nicely so far. This is my first fall garden so pulling the tomato plants was not so depressing. I hope all of you and your gardens...

Good morning gardeners. This is the first year that I will have a fall garden. I have decided to try few broccoli and cabbage plants. I decided to visit our local County Co-Op a couple of days ago and they had starts of both and I bought a nine-pack cell of each. I hope they do well because we are still having 90 degree days with overnights in the mid to high 60’s. They also had starts for various types of tomato plants which kind of surprised me. If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and...

Good morning gardeners. We are having beautiful weather here in Central Mississippi. My tomato plants are looking a little scraggly but are thriving and still producing new green tomatoes. I removed my okra plants earlier this week because they were just too huge and some of my pepper plants were craving more sunlight. The pepper plants that have been getting full sun are just loaded with plump peppers. If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our...

Good morning gardeners. The end of August is approaching and the temperatures have moderated here in East Central Mississippi. Lows are in the mid 60’s with daytime highs in the high 80’s to 90 degrees. My garden is thriving in this weather. The sweet and hot peppers are abundant and the tomato plants are back in production mode. I think I will be removing my okra plants this week. They are huge and sprawling and over seven foot tall. They have to go so the sun can get to other plants. If you are a gardener or you are just...

Good morning gardeners. Freeper tubebender submitted a request yesterday afternoon via FreepMail that we make one of our threads about the garden magazines, books and web sites we peruse to further our quest for the perfect Zucchini??? It is a great idea. How about we also add seed catalogs and where we get our recipes to the list also. Here a just a few web sites that I like to go to regularly: Mississippi State University Extension Service National Gardening Association Pick Your Own - Also Info On Canning, Freezing and Recipes All Recipes.com Brewing-Compost-Tea Vegetable Gardener finegardening.com Pruning Tomatoes

Good morning gardeners. Typical August weather has set in here in East Central Mississippi with days in the mid 90’s and nights in the mid 70’s. I have pears and a few figs maturing and being picked. My garden is still producing but just a little slower in this heat. This is typical for me. Daisyjane69 asked me to pass on a link to a weekly radio gardening show by a gardening expert in NE Ohio. It provides advice about vegetables, flowers, shrubs, trees, soil, watering, bugs, fertilizer, pruning, and EVERYTHING. At the link you can download the programs and...
