April 28, 2012 (WPVI) -- Firefighters came to the rescue of a southern New Jersey man who became stuck in a tree while trying to reach his pet bird. Dave Lovell tells the Courier-Post his scarlet macaw had escaped his home late Thursday night. After spending most of Friday looking for the bird, Lovell saw it at the top of the tree around 6:10 p.m. The Cherry Hill man used a ladder to get in the tree and climbed another 60 feet to reach his feathered friend. But when Lovell couldn't get down and had to cling to some branches,...

It has been 25-odd years since Absolut Peppar and Citron entered the American market, and since then, the flavored-vodka business keeps growing, now representing a quarter of the vodka market. Lemon, cranberry, grapefruit, pear, dragonfruit -- the entire fruit aisle is now being turned into 'tinis. (Though SFoodie is a brown-spirits kind of guy, we will admit to a guilty liking for Absolut Ruby Red, and drink the Alameda-produced Hangar One lime and citron vodkas quite readily.) As success grows, so does the temptation for distillers to indulge in risk-taking behaviors. Three years ago, vodka companies were still marketing the...

Old Lyme — The goose with the arrow through its head that was spotted earlier this year is continuing to evade capture by town animal control officials. The bird stood out Friday in a flock of fellow geese near High Hopes, a horse farm on Town Woods Road. Old Lyme assistant animal control officer Lizabeth Gode said the goose is able to fly, which has thwarted attempts to capture it. She said officials have tried using nets and food to lure the goose, to no avail.

NEW YORK - So you recycle, drive a small car, and try to eat organic. But what about running an eco-sustainable fish farm combined with a naturally fertilized vegetable patch in your kitchen? Christopher Toole and Anya Pozdeeva, two former New York bankers who founded the Society for Aquaponic Values and Education (SAVE), are there to help. "We call it 'beyond organic,'" Pozdeeva, 39, said. Aquaponics is a technique with ancient roots for breeding tank fish, recycling their effluent-filled water to fertilize vegetation, then allowing this naturally cleaned water to drip back into the tank below. It's a perfect, miniature...

Green clouds over Moscow spark range of theories Mysterious green clouds have been spotted over the Russian capital, sparking fears of a chemical disaster and even some doomsday theories. But the Emergencies Ministry is advising the public to calm down. It says the clouds are actually composed of birch pollen, not of chemicals from an allegedly burning factory in the Moscow region, as some reported. Some people, however, got so scared that even the official comments could not convince them. Russian Twitter users have been posting alarming messages like “Moscow schools are closed because of the blast! Children are sent...
  • Dark Matter May Collide With Atoms Inside You More Often Than Thought

Invisible dark matter particles may regularly pass through our bodies, and dozens to thousands of these particles may be colliding with atoms inside us every year, according to a new calculation. However, radiation from these impacts is unlikely to cause cancer, investigators added. Dark matter is one of the greatest scientific mysteries of our time — an invisible substance thought to make up five-sixths of all matter in the universe. Scientists think it might be composed of things called weakly interacting massive particles, or WIMPs, that interact normally with gravity but very weakly with all the other known forces of...

Cactus Jack was then transported to Arizona Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Hospital, where the rest of the spines were removed. According to Britta Nelson, the society’s public relations manager, the dog’s “good disposition never wavered,” and, “his tail never stopped wagging.” Despite the spines all over his face, Cactus Jack’s eyes were not damaged and after a course of antibiotics he was returned to the Humane Society with a clean bill of health. The brave, if unfortunate Yorkie/terrier mix was adopted today at Arizona Humane Society Sunnyslope, where he repaid his rescuers in spades. The amount of attention brought...
