Police believe death was from overdose ECORSE, Mich - Former Michigan lottery winner Amanda Clayton was found dead early Saturday morning at a friend's house in Ecorse. Police believe she died from an overdose. Reports are saying it was from prescription medication. Local 4 Defender Karen Drew later revealed that Clayton was collecting food stamps after winning the jackpot. She was charged with welfare fraud and sentenced to probation in July.

A Seattle couple alleged to have been drawing government assistance while living in a $1.2 million Lake Washington home has been charged with defrauding the government and is expected to plead guilty. Accusing the couple of stealing more than $115,000 meant to subsidize housing for the poor, federal prosecutors have filed felony theft charges against chiropractor David Mark Silverstein and Lyudmila Shimonova. Both are expected to appear in U.S. District Court next week to answer the felony charge of theft of government funds, which was filed by information Tuesday. Attorneys for both defendants said Tuesday their clients will be pleading...

A woman who is eight-months pregnant with her sixteenth child is claiming police brutality after she says Tampa officers used a stun gun on her. Tampa police arrested Angel Adams, 39, this week and charged her with battery on a law enforcement officer after a scuffle when police came to her home to talk to one of her sons. She says the stun gun endangered her life -- and the life of her unborn child. Adams, 39, first made headlines two years ago when she was evicted from her apartment, then moved into a small motel room with 12 of...

When Eugene Jenkins showed up at St. Paul AME Church at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, he didn’t know he would be one of the last people to get a ticket for assistance with his heating bill.He waited in line until 7 a.m., when officials started to hand out the tickets, then went home for a few hours before returning at 10 a.m. By the time he had finished up his paperwork, it was 1:15 p.m., making for a long day. Jenkins was one of the lucky ones in Macon, though. Other people were turned away because the Macon-Bibb County Economic Opportunity...

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) literally lost it on the House floor Thursday over his Republican colleagues' procedural objection to an amendment to the Public Health Services Act. The amendment would extend and improve health care benefits for 9/11 victims suffering from lasting health complications. Weiner is given to House floor drama. The New York Democrat is known for his often passionate and attention-grabbing remarks. He screamed for more than a minute Thursday, calling on Republican colleagues to vote 'no' against the bill, rather than object on procedural grounds.

A Springfield mom of nine said yesterday she has been bombarded with hate messages in the wake of a Herald article on her lawsuit against doctors who she claims permanently sterilized her without her written consent. Tessa Savicki, 35, has received a dozen nasty text messages and comments on her Facebook page since Sunday’s article on the suit. She said she’s been attacked for being a poor, single mom who is on public assistance. “It hurts. I don’t want my kids suffering,” said Savicki, who lives with her fiance and four of her kids and said she has even dyed...

  • How could American Oil Companies lower the price? Or Could they?

Could American Oil Companies lower the price of Oil, even if they wanted? The last figures I saw showed that American oil companies controlled 25% of the world market and 40% of the US Market. Let's say that under Congressional pressure all of America's oil companies got together and said they were going to sell their oil at $50 per barrel. What would happen? My thought is that the rest of the world would immediately buy up all their output to resell at the world price and then nothing else would change. Anyone have any other scenarios?

Life long republican - Drive by troll
All my life, I believed in Republican values -- individual responsibility and limited government. Then it happened; I found myself with a small child, unemployed and disabled. I turned to my church, and after years of regular tithes, suddenly I just wasn't their problem. My Republican friends? I was now a pariah to them. My only relief was to turn to government assistance for housing, food, and other needs and I was able to survive with dignity. So chalk me up as one who no longer drinks the GOP koolaid.
  • Cape hurricane evacuee gives birth to a son (13th child)

Add another name to the list of residents at the Cape Cod military base where evacuees from Hurricane Katrina are staying. But this one didn't need a plane to get there. Dionne White of New Orleans gave birth Tuesday at Falmouth Hospital to a boy whom she named Cape Cod Bannister, or C.C. for short. It's the first birth to an evacuee staying at Camp Edwards. "I named him that because I love Cape Cod," White told The Boston Globe. "Coming here has been a big break for me. It's like Christmas, just a big old miracle. And you don't...

WHILE millions of Americans know the conspiracies behind who killed JFK and why Elvis is living in a trailer park in Port Orange, Fla., I don't waste my time with such theories. Instead, I live my life and judge people on their athletic footwear. I call it the Sneaker Theory. .... BRING GIS HOME: W. By Deborah Orin August 17, 2004 -- WASHINGTON -- President Bush yesterday unveiled plans to bring home up to 70,000 troops from Europe and Asia, with the biggest chunk coming out of Germany. Democratic rival John Kerry's allies instantly opposed the idea. "The world has changed a great deal and our posture must change with it," Bush said as he revealed plans for a massive shift of troops that he said will make it easier to strike fast against terror and easier on military families. "Our service members will have more time on the home...

'We won't come back till it's over/Over There!' sang America's doughboys, marching off to war in 1917. In the Second World War, they had other songs to sing, which is just as well because, even though the World War was over over there 60 years ago, and the Cold War was over 15 years ago, only now are the Yanks heading home. In the largest military realignment in years, Washington plans to withdraw 70,000 troops plus 100,000 family members and support personnel from overseas US bases. That means, for the most part, from Europe. This will undoubtedly be welcome news...
