Celebrated conservative radio talker Mark Levin has cut a long-term extension with Westwood One-Cumulus, meaning one of the nation’s most influential talk show hosts will be on the air for another five years, well past the upcoming 2016 presidential election. Westwood One announced the contract extension for “The Mark Levin Show” through 2020 Thursday morning. They called Levin, a legal scholar who also runs Landmark Legal Foundation, “one of the most trusted voices in radio.” Five-year contracts are rare in the media. Levin started on radio in 2002 and his current show was launched on WABC in New York. He...

R&R has learned that layoffs at Westwood One have claimed upward of 70 jobs throughout the company. In an internal memo obtained by R&R, President/CEO Peter Kosann said the action "is part of several steps our company will take — and must take — to increase productivity and improve the utilization of all our resources." Concurrently, WW1 has initiated an evaluation of its services to Metro Networks affiliates in its smaller markets — namely those ranked by DMA under No. 60 — as part of a plan to reduce local operating costs. "Our plan is to continue to provide quality...

The connection was obvious to senators of both parties, though nobody said so publicly. Four days before Sen. Joseph Biden declared he would seek the Democratic presidential nomination if he could find the financing, he held hostage an important, non-controversial Bush diplomatic appointee. His intent: to force President Bush to reappoint a billionaire backer of Biden to a government oversight board. Nobody expected Biden's move when the Senate Foreign Relations Committee convened last Wednesday to send routine nominations to the floor. Biden, the committee's ranking Democrat, blocked Senate consideration of White House personnel director Dina Habib Powell as the State...

Since the shock of September 11th, and parallel to military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq, U.S. government officials in various agencies have sought to "win hearts and minds" in the Arab and Muslim world by crafting publicity schemes and media projects. All of those produced so far have been characterized by a combination of bombast, naivete, and silliness that, according to many friendly watchers and listeners in the targeted publics, does more to undermine than to reinforce American credibility. First there was Charlotte Beers, a former executive at such leading advertising firms as Ogilvy & Mather, named Undersecretary of State...
  • More Fallout From Sex Stunt: Opie & Anthony On 'Vacation'

The WNEW/New York afternoon talkers and Westwood One syndicated personalities are off at least through the end of this week after news broke of their contest encouraging couples to have sex in the city's riskiest places; the couple who had their encounter in St. Patrick's Cathedral - just feet from worshippers - were even arrested. At press time, officials at Westwood One were unable to confirm if Opie & Anthony's time off was scheduled or an enforced vacation.
