BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's prime minister has told Shiite militiamen to surrender their arms or face an all-out assault by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, senior Iraqi officials said Wednesday, as President Bush said he will commit an additional 21,500 American combat troops to the war. Under pressure from the U.S., Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has agreed to crack down on fighters controlled by his most powerful political ally, Muqtada al-Sadr, a radical Shiite cleric, according to officials. Previously, al-Maliki had resisted the move. "Prime Minister al-Maliki has told everyone that there will be no escape from attack," a senior Shiite legislator...

It can stop a bullet from an AK-47, shrug off a roadside bomb, and it makes a Hummer look like a chick car. The $200,000 (U.S.) Gurkha is coming to a road near you — thanks to a King City-based company that is finding itself in demand because of the global war on terror. "They are pretty awesome machines," says William Whyte, owner of Armet Armored Vehicles Inc., the company that builds the Gurkha. "We've been stopped on roads with people taking pictures and wanting to know what they are." The Gurkha can go more than 150 kilometres per hour...

IAF fighter jets dropped over 20 tons in bombs late Wednesday night on a Hizbullah bunker, possibly the hiding place of the group's leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, in the Bourj al-Barajneh refugee camp in southeast Beirut. It was still unclear who was in the bunker at the time and what their fate was, but IDF sources said the bunker was totally destroyed and that all that was left was a crater. The IDF obtained intelligence information late Wednesday night that Hizbullah leaders possibly including Nasrallah had taken refuge inside the bunker. A wave of aircraft immediately took to the air...

I am not certain what the legal ramifications would be in changing Free Republic from donations to a subscription service. It seems to me the switch may be detrimental to legal issues such as copyrights. If that is true I'd appreciate if someone could briefly explain that to me. However if that is not the case here is my suggestion: I have been wondering about this for some time now and have not seen any discussions about it. So I would like to ask: Is it time for Free Republic to become an online subscription service? Currently, the site is...

HONG KONG — A six-minute film showing a grumpy man scolding a fellow Hong Kong bus rider for interrupting his phone call has become one of the most popular videos online. "Bus Uncle," as the film is commonly known, has been viewed nearly 1.7 million times on the video Web site youtube.com — the second-most-viewed video on the site in May as of Thursday — spawning spoofs and new slang drawn from the ranting subject's emotionally charged soliloquy. The grainy film was apparently recorded using a mobile phone. The film starts out when a middle-age man reacts strongly when a...

What struck Jim Wier first, as he entered the Wal-Mart vice president's office, was the seating area for visitors. "It was just some lawn chairs that some other peddler had left behind as samples." The vice president's office was furnished with a folding lawn chair and a chaise lounge. And so Wier, the CEO of lawn-equipment maker Simplicity, dressed in a suit, took a seat on the chaise lounge. "I sat forward, of course, with my legs off to the side. If you've ever sat in a lawn chair, well, they are lower than regular chairs. And I was on...

Included in human nature is an intense love. Even, because of the power of imagination, man fancies a sort of immortality in everything he loves. Whenever he thinks of or sees their passing, he cries out from the depths of his being. All the lamentations at separation are interpretations of the weeping resulting from love of immortality. If there was no imagined immortality, there would be no love. It might even be said that a reason for the existence of the eternal realm and everlasting Paradise is the intense desire for immortality arising from that passionate love of immortality, and...

For God's sake people, what is going on, with this website and in this country?!! We are all falling apart!! The left is getting us all to turn against ourselves and we are letting them do it. For Christ sakes get it together people and stop this nonsense. I too have my doubts about what is going on with Bush but that is because I am falling into the same trap as eveybody else. We are under attack within and many of us are falling into the trap and we must get it together to stop this madness. We are...

RUSH: I want to now go to these Dan Rather sound bites. Dan Rather was interviewed last night at the National Press Club in Washington by former CBS News employee-reporter Marvin Kalb. Marvin Kalb now runs the John F. Kennedy School of Government's Shorenstein Center at Harvard, and you know something? When you hear these bites you're going to understand what I'm saying here. This is one of the problems of the mainstream media today. When these reporters that get long in the tooth get laid off or retired, they farm them out to these think tanks and these journalism...

BRITISH police are considering the possibility that the four key suspects in last week's London attacks may have been tricked into setting off their bombs, a newspaper has reported. "We do not have hard evidence that the men were suicide bombers," a Scotland Yard spokesman told The Sunday Telegraph. "It is possible that they did not intend to die." According to the paper, one police hypothesis is that the bombers were tricked by a "master" who told them they would have time to escape - when in fact the devices were set to go off immediately. "The bombers' masters might...

Great whites and tigers are bigger, but the scariest shark people are likely to encounter in Florida is the bull shark. A bull was blamed in the fatal attack June 25 on a 14-year-old girl, bitten in the leg as she swam off the beach in Walton County in the Panhandle. A bull is also suspected in an attack Monday, when a shark bit a teenager swimming in waist-deep water 80 miles from the site of the Saturday attack. Doctors amputated the boy's leg, but he is expected to recover. A third attack, on Friday, injured an Austian who was...

Michael Jackson attorney T. Mesereau seems to be completely out of this world regarding justice and the justice system. Just because an old civil rights lawyer gets himself seduced and hired by Jackson does not mean that this lawyer (not "attorney") has the end word and all the final sayso on what's right and wrong. Mesereau has been on every talk show that will have him in the past two days blaring about how bad the prosecution was and touting the "aggresiveness" of himself and his team. Sure, Jackson was found not guilty but not guilty is certainly not the...

If you, gentlemen, really want “to see US politics from another angle”, compare it with politics of present-day totalitarian regimes in Central Asia, for instance. And you’ll realize that there are practically no differences for our “democratic” state and e.g. authoritarian government in Turkmenistan. It’s common knowledge that Turkmen authorities abridge liberty of speech, freedom of the press, exercising control over mass and I-net. They bow down, imposing restrictions on freedom of association and assembly, in order to curtail political activity of non-governmental organizations, including groups of religious minorities. Nijazov does it with the aim of exercising control over latitude...

Smoking Gun at FOX News Yesterday, I released to an expectant world a smoking gun-memo from Bill Keller, Executive Editor of the New York Times. LOS ANGELES — The Planned Parenthood Association says it's not too early to be thinking of that perfect Christmas gift idea. They will be offering the little beauties (pictured left) at their Los Angeles offices starting next month. It's all part of a new nationwide campaign to make condoms more fun. "They could even be used as finger puppets, as you can see," said a spokesman for Planned Parenthood. "We're trying to get people away from thinking of the condom as strictly a 'backdoor' business." The spokesman said that Jewish versions are still in the testing phase. "Both the Star...

For most people, Moscow's underworld conjures up images of high-rolling gangsters driving around in expensive cars. For Vadim Mikhailov, Moscow's underworld is a tangible place of wonder and awe, a site of endless tunnels and labyrinths, clandestine streams and strange, unexplainable phenomena. "Moscow has the largest, deepest and most complicated network of underground channels of any city in the world," Mikhailov said. In 1990, Mikhailov founded Diggers of the Underground Planet, a loose confederacy of subterranean explorers. The group first formed in Moscow, but now it has members in major cities all over the world. Mikhailov's love affair with the...

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Rocky Oldaker bought a wood box for $2 at a thrift store because it looked interesting. When he opened it, what he found inside was priceless to Linda Bigford: her mother's ashes. "I don't think that is what someone's life should boil down to ... $2 at a thrift store," said Oldaker, who bought the box along with a stuffed animal and a picture frame. When he unscrewed the box bottom at home, Oldaker discovered a plastic bag of ashes and a note identifying them as those of June Peltier of Marion, Mich. Peltier, 77, died...

County sued over court Bible display Alabama case sparks local call for removal By ALLAN TURNERCopyright 2003 Houston Chronicle Citing concern over what she perceives as growing religious fundamentalism, a Houston woman filed suit Monday in federal court against Harris County, demanding it remove a King James Bible from a monument near the Fannin Street entrance of the civil courthouse. The Bible, tattered and waterstained, has occupied the lighted display case since 1995, when an employee of then-state District Judge John Devine's court undertook an effort to refurbish the neglected monument. The 4-foot-tall pedestal was erected in 1956 to honor...

Also Tuesday, Muslim-Jewish friction intensified at a disputed holy site in Jerusalem. U.S. termed worst rogue state Pyongyang, April 5 (KCNA) -- The United States started the Iraqi war, once again laying bare the despicable true colours of the U.S. imperialists who have indulged in all wrong doings, ignoring the UN and violating international law. Rodong Sinmun today says this in a signed article. It continues: The U.S. is going to use more than 300 types of ultra-modern weapons in the Iraqi war and has already used the "massive, ordinance, air blast (MOA)" bomb. This is hideous war crimes, crimes against humanity as they diametrically run counter to all international laws and...

The War At Home The number of emails I’ve received about my article on antiwar conservatives has just crossed the 350 mark. Of those, fewer than 10 have been negative. 01:37 2003-03-22 MURDERERS!! Donald Rumsfeld, the US Defence Secretary, gloated tonight while Baghdad was subjected to a terrifying 3 hours of massive bombardment by aircraft and cruise missiles. Donald Rumsfeld rejoiced with the knowledge that his “shock and awe” campaign had been a “success”. In a terrorist attack of horrendous proportions, hundreds of “targets” have been razed in the city, bearing witness to Rumsfeld’s claims that the US/UK forces would unleash an attack of “unprecedented” force and scale as he banged his fist theatrically on the dais in the Pentagon. Speaking of “targets”, Rumsfeld, like his master George Bush,...

DPRK Foreign Ministry spokesman on U.S. start of Iraqi war Pyongyang, March 21 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the DPRK Foreign Ministry gave an answer to a question put by KCNA today as regards the U.S. start of military attack on Iraq. He said: At dawn of March 20, the United States finally started its military attack on Iraq defying the unanimous protest of the international community. The U.S. armed attack is a grave encroachment upon sovereignty. The violation of Iraqi sovereignty already started with demanding disarmament by inspection and gradually led to the war. The unilateral demand for the...
