June 10, 2015 MILWAUKEE—Few state party chairs have ever had a tenure like Mike Tate. The man who led Wisconsin Democrats for the past six years watched his party lose to Scott Walker in three elections, including a recall of their own making. He watched a liberal icon, then-Sen. Russ Feingold, lose to a tea-party-backed Republican, Ron Johnson. And most consequentially of all, he watched the Walker-led GOP break the traditional backbone of the Democratic Party—unions—in a set of once-unthinkable legislative actions. There have been successes during the past years, too, as Tate pointed out during his farewell address to...

After being diverted to the rules committee, the Wisconsin legislature passed SB 35 in the Assembly, obtained concurrence with the Senate (which had passed it previously) and sent it to Governor Walker for signature. From cbslocal.com: Wisconsin Republicans moved within a step Tuesday of eliminating the state’s decades-old 48-hour waiting period for handgun purchases, pushing a bill that would wipe out the statutes through the state Assembly to Gov. Scott Walker’s desk. I have not been able to find a record of the final vote, but I believe that at least some Democrats voted for the bill. At...

Knife rights is having a good year. In Wisconsin, a reform bill to de-criminalize switchblades for concealed carry permit holders and police was determined to be an insufficient reform by the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. A strengthened reform bill, to include knife preemption and decriminalization for the State, was written and passed as a substitute amendment, by a bi-partisan vote of 8-2. The bill number is AB 142. Chances of passage in the Assembly and Senate look favorable. It is likely that Governor Walker would sign the bill, as it essentially brings Wisconsin knife law...

"...During a confusing and often tense meeting Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,a committee of the UW System Board of Regents recommended the full board support moving tenure policy from state law into board policy. A GOP plan by the Legislature's budget-writing Joint Finance Committee took tenure out of the law, as proposed by Gov. Scott Walker. The full Legislature still must take action on the GOP plan as part of the budget, but the plan is expected to be adopted.Regent Tony Evers, state superintendent of public instruction, failed to get enough votes during the regents committee meeting to formally ask lawmakers...

Authorities seized almost 1,200 birds as they broke up an alleged cockfighting ring in western Wisconsin. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals helped authorities remove the birds from four properties in Polk and St. Croix counties. Authorities executed search warrants to seize the birds Tuesday morning. The ASPCA says cockfighting paraphernalia was discovered on the properties, including a fighting pit and gaffs - long, dagger-like attachments used to maximum injury to birds. Tim Rickey, a lead investigator, said, "It's a very lucrative industry, there's a lot of money involved in raising and selling of birds and...

Hillary Rodham Clinton’s top campaign lawyer has filed a second voter-access lawsuit accusing a Republican-led state of trying to suppress the vote — this time in Wisconsin, home to Scott Walker, the governor and likely Republican 2016 presidential candidate. “This lawsuit concerns the most fundamental of rights guaranteed citizens in our representative democracy — the right to vote,” the complaint states, then refers to a curtailing of early voting in the state, among other changes that affect minority voters and other groups. “That right has been under attack in Wisconsin since Republicans gained control of the governor’s office and both...

Wisconsin’s K-12 public schools would see about $200 million more in state funding and the private school voucher program would be broadly expanded, under a sweeping package of changes approved by the legislature’s Joint Finance Committee. The 29-page proposal, released just hours before the committee voted on the changes late Tuesday night, would increase funding for public schools by about $70 million in the 2016-17 school year, while keeping about $127 million in funding for schools in place that Governor Scott Walker had proposed cutting. It would amount to a $250 per pupil funding increase over the course of the...

Eau Claire County (WQOW) - A new week brings disheartening news to the taxpayers of Eau Claire County. The former Eau Claire County Treasurer and his assistant have been accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars. According to the criminal complaint, they took more than $625,000 from the county between 2011 and 2013. Larry Lokken and Kay Onarheim have both been charged with 11 counts of felony theft, as well as three counts each of misconduct in the office. They were arrested by the Eau Claire Police Department on Thursday and have been in jail since then. The two...

MADISON, Wis. -- A white Wisconsin police officer won't be charged for fatally shooting an unarmed 19-year-old biracial man, a prosecutor announced Tuesday, prompting peaceful demonstrations but none of the immediate violence that has hit some other U.S. cities in similar cases. Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said he wouldn't file charges against Madison Officer Matt Kenny in the March 6 death of Tony Robinson, saying the officer used lawful deadly force after he was staggered by a punch to the head and feared for his life. Ozanne, mopping his brow repeatedly but speaking forcefully for some 25 minutes,...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin lawmakers advanced a set of bills Wednesday that would require food stamp users to buy healthy food and mandate drug screening for state job training program applicants and some unemployment benefit claimants. An Assembly committee on public benefit reform approved the bills almost on party lines Wednesday, with Republicans voting in favor and Democrats against. Rep. Adam Neylon, a Pewaukee Republican, also voted against the measures. The approval clears the way for the full Assembly to vote on the measures next week. But prospects for the bill that would restrict food options for food stamp...

These incredible photos show the damage caused by a bird strike to a passenger plane. The Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Nevehir in Turkey was on approach to land when it was involved in a severe hit with a unlucky bird. There were 125 passengers on board the Boeing 737-800, and there were not believed to be any injuries suffered on the landing on Tuesday.

Wisconsin knife law dates back to the 1950's and before, and like a lot of weapons law, has been very selectively enforced. If you were a minority, and spent time in Milwaukee, you were treated one way; if you were not and lived North of the Madison- Milwaukee line, you had little to fear. Most people had no idea that belting on their hunting knife, and putting on a jacket, made them subject to arrest for carrying a concealed weapon; and they were mostly justified because the police did not enforce the law. Except when they wanted to, against...

While visiting Iowa this weekend, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker commented on the wildly out-of-control “John Doe” prosecution waged by partisan Democrats in his state. One of the many objectionable features of this crusade was that the targets were legally gagged from talking about it. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm responded to Walker’s comments by threatening him. Whatever Chisholm’s virtues as a D.A. might be, a keen sense of irony is evidently not among them. The Wisconsin Witch Hunt has been an abiding interest of mine for years–rarely have so many been terrorized by so few for so little gain, until...

In January 2013, a 32-second radio advertisement was broadcast in Milwaukee, and — quite by accident — a political star was born. Hoping to encourage local residents to play a part in their own protection, the commercial’s progenitor went firmly on the record in favor of the private ownership of firearms: “With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.” Rather, listeners were invited to “consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm.” “You have a duty to protect yourself and your family,” the commercial intoned. “Can I count on...

The Supreme Court will decide Friday whether to grant review on a case relating to the infamous Wisconsin “John Doe” investigation of conservative groups that supported Governor Scott Walker and his reform of public sector union collective bargaining. The case, O’Keefe v. Chisholm, was filed by Eric O’Keefe and the Wisconsin Club for Growth after they each received John Doe subpoenas in October 2013, demanding that they turn over all Club records and communications–including all emails, financial materials and donor lists–to prosecutors. Consistent with Wisconsin’s John Doe law, the subpoenas gagged O’Keefe and the Club, prohibiting them from speaking to anyone...

If you haven't read David French's piece in NRO concerning the John Doe investigations and the tactics deployed in them under the direction of liberal Democrat Milwaukee County DA John Chisholm, please do so.A number of conservative activists in Wisconsin who had the temerity to support Governor Scott Walker and his efforts to curb public sector unions found their homes raided by police, their property confiscated and were told by the authorities they could tell no one about what happened not even their attorneys. This was done under the order of Chisholm who has also directly targeted Walker in a John...

John Doe laws dating back to the 19th century in Wisconsin allow DAs to hold secret panels, compel people to give testimony and turn over documents. To take advantage of the loopholes was Prosecutor John Chisholm, a partisan hack who had a vendetta against Scott Walker. The corruption extends to judges, police officers, lawyers and to at least one newspaper, the Journal Sentinel. In a September 9, 2014 article, former Milwaukee police officer Michael Lutz, who for several months served as an unpaid special prosecutor in Chisholm’s office, said that Milwaukee County DA John Chisholm, a Democrat, told him in...

Criminals normally commit many crimes before they are caught. If these crimes occur in a short amount of time, we call it a crime spree. One of the ways these crime sprees are cut short is that the criminals encounter an armed citizen. It happened in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday, the 10th of April, 2015. From channel3000.com: MADISON, Wis. - Police said two men were arrested after a string of violent home invasions Friday on Madison's west side. A number of people were victimized, starting with a 90 year old woman, then a 22 year old noticed a burglary...

MILWAUKEE —A new Marquette University Law School poll finds Hillary Clinton leading a possible presidential matchup against Gov. Scott Walker. However, Walker leads Republicans in the presidential race. Forty percent support a Walker run while 10 percent favor Rand Paul, 8 percent for Jeb Bush, and 6 percent each for Chris Christie and Ted Cruz. The poll finds that among Wisconsin voters, Clinton leads Walker 52 percent to 40 percent. The poll also showed that Walker's approval rating in the state has slipped. The most recent poll showed a 41 percent approval rating, compared to 49 percent in October. Looking...

Sometimes, 7 shots are not enough. 10 Shots are not enough. 20 shots are not enough, 30 shots are not enough. In the case related below, 40 shots were required to defeat a determined attacker. Most predators retreat in the face of resistance. If a predator faces armed resistance very many times, they will be killed or wounded. In nature, that makes for a short life. But there are motives for aggression other than predation. Defending territory and competing for mates are two of them, often intertwined. Those conflicts are engaged in with fierce dedication. Without territory or mates, ...
