  • House window upgrade recommendations?

    03/11/2017 10:47:47 AM PST · by LouAvul · 38 replies
My house was built in 1998 with builder grade thermopane windows. It has four singles, three doubles and one triple window. I know of the Anderson and Pella brands, but know nothing about them other than the name. I'd like soundproofing as well as minimal heat transfer. Recommendations? Thanks.

Even if you didn't know it was called the "Azure Window" and didn't know it was located on Malta, an island nation in the Mediterranean, you probably recognize pictures of the famous rock formation, a stunning land bridge connecting the island to a massive rock jutting out of the sea ... While stunning, the collapse does not come as a complete surprise. Formed by erosion, the Window was eventually destined to be destroyed by erosion: The same waves which carved the window out of the living rock continues to eat away at the structure and threatens to one day cause...

  • Germans told 'stay away from windows' for Obama visit

Locals in Hanover have been given a very specific command for when the US President comes to visit — better neither heard nor seen. When US President Barack Obama arrives in Hanover for a visit on Sunday April 24th, residents have been told very clearly what is expected of them: stay away from windows and do not wave. Local police issued advisory flyers out of security concerns for some 1,800 residents who live near the Congress Centrum and zoo area, where Obama will be meeting Chancellor Angela Merkel for the Hanover Messe, a major global trade fair for industrial technology....
  • New backdoor regulations render store stock non-code compliant

I was in my local Lowes store today. Zipcode: 33541 I was shopping for and inquiring about windows to put in the wall of an existing home. There are metal, vinyl, etc. Single, double pane variations. Some block some of the light from the sun from entering to some extent. The Lowes salesman asked me if I was planning on pulling a county permit? I asked why he asked ! He said starting about two months ago they changed the code and requirements for windows. He told me the code that had been applying only to new construction had been...

I need to replace several windows in my house to get it ready to sell. I have had a few estimates made and frankly, I cannot afford to have them professionally done. Even if I could, I wouldn't recoup half of what i would spend. Therefore, I am endeavoring to man up and buy the windows and install them myself. I have seen a few Youtube videos (I know, I know) on replacing aluminum windows, but in two rooms I have these double hung, side by side windows. I guess what I really need is some advice on how to...

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has for much of the past few months been battling against a media narrative which frames him as some kind of Old Dominion Todd Akin – an extreme social conservative candidate who has split his party, dividing the moderate and conservative wings, and creating wedges vulnerable for exploitation by a centrist, pro-business Democrat. This narrative was sustained through most of August, fueled in part by the dramatically higher ad expenditures of Cuccinelli’s well-funded opponent, lifelong Democratic fundraiser Terry McAuliffe. Except this narrative has crumbled in recent weeks, at the same time that Cuccinelli has cut...

Earthworm poo can be used to measure past temperatures, providing a window into the ancient climate. A study shows that the chemistry of small balls of chalky crystals secreted into soil by the worms varies with temperature. A UK team said the granules could be compared with other climatic "proxies", such as ice cores and deep sea sediments. Details appear in the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. Scientists from the universities of Reading and York, report that the calcium carbonate (calcite) nodules dug up from archaeological sites give a unique measure of the ancient local temperatures. Because the ratios of...

Two Brazilian air force pilots could be collared by the long arm of the law after making a low-altitude supersonic fly pass which shattered every window of Brazil's Supreme Court. If they know what's good for them, it might be a good idea to keep flying and put as much distance between them and the angry lawyers inside the blown-out building Swooping low over the structure housing the Supremo Tribunal Federal in Brasilia, the two French-made Mirage 2000 jets generated a massive shockwave - destroying the building's glass facade. The war planes had been taking part in the ceremony of...

Do it yourself guy builds train detector to automatically shut bedroom window( -- In a nice display of can-do thinking leading to positive action, a guy by the name of Ed Rogers has devised a device that automatically shuts the window in his bedroom whenever a train passes by, reducing the noise significantly. He has posted a video on YouTube explaining how he did it. To start out, Rogers first installed a linear actuator (a mechanical device for moving an object) connected to a part he printed off using MakerBot’s Thing-O-Matic, which was then connected to wires that snaked...

The couple also threw a mattress out the window, but a hotel manager came to the room before they could jump. The manager told the couple there was no gas leak. The prank cost about $5,000 in damages. Police say...
