War Crimes and Other Misdemeanors Deborah Nelsons new book documents Vietnam atrocities the army did nothing to stop. Deborah NelsonJohn Consoli / University of Maryland By Michael MinerNovember 27, 2008An essay in last Sundays New York Times marveled at the spate of new Holocaust movies arriving for the Christmas season. Movies fulfilling the pledge to never forget have become a genre, wrote film critic A.O. Scotta feel-good genre emphasizing hope and overcoming rather than despair and destruction. Let me suggest this: Maybe high-minded Americans gravitate to Holocaust movies because they distract us. They let us think were looking hard at...

The modern Winter Soldier movement now operates as the Iraq Veterans Against the War. Similar to the Vietnam era Winter Soldier anti-war movement, the modern effort uses the alleged testimony of carefully cherry-picked soldiers who claim to have witnessed systemic American atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan to make their ten point case against the war. The organization lists the following ten primary reasons why they oppose todayÂs war on terror, specifically taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan. âȘ The Iraq war is based on lies and deception. âȘ The Iraq war violates international law. âȘ Corporate profiteering is driving the...

One former soldier recounted an interrogation of an Iraqi by his fellow combatants so brutal he likened it to "a frat house gang rape." Another was still troubled not by his close brushes with death, but by the times he nearly shot innocent Iraqi civilians. And a third was exasperated and puzzled by being asked to fulfill what he called "ridiculous" orders to harass Iraqi residents and was discouraged from helping those in distress. He called the war "immoral and absurd." All came together Saturday afternoon at Seattle's Town Hall to share their troubling and sometimes graphic war stories in...

An organization calling itself Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) convened a conference in Silver Spring, Maryland, entitled Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan â Eyewitness Accounts of the Occupations, this month. Modeling itself on the 1971 Winter Soldier Investigation (WSI), which provided the text for John Kerryâs infamous testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee later that year, the event claimed to âfeature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in [the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan], giving an accurate account of what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground.â But in the immortal words of Yogi...

The Iraq Veterans Against the War held their Winter Soldier II event this weekend at the National Labor College. The implied intent of this event was to give testimony to a myriad of claimed attrocites committed by the US military in Iraq. Not surprisingly, it fell far short of its intent. For lefties expecting proof of the dishonor and heinous behavior of the US military, surely Monday morning recaps will bring little more than disappointment and frustration. For those who feared the smearing of our military a la John Kerry and the original Winter Soldiers, solace can be found.

Weve got another joint YAF/Hot Air TV production for you, just in time for the anti-war confab known as Winter Soldier II that kicks off in Washington, D.C. tomorrow and runs through Sunday. YAFs Jason Mattera, our intrepid special correspondent who cornered Jack Murtha in September, is back in the halls of Congress. This week, Jason caught up with the original Winter Soldier, Sen. John Kerry, and confronted him about his unsubstantiated, troop-smearing testimony. Jason also tried...

Members of the radical group Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) are busy preparing to host a new war crimes conference next month in Washington. The event, billed as Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan, takes its title from the IVAWs namesake and mentor, the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). However, information has now come to light that profoundly undermines the VVAWs original atrocity claims.

Home News Latest Winter Soldiers II: We Won't Stand for More Lies Winter Soldiers II: We Won't Stand for More Lies Written by Melanie Morgan Monday, 10 March 2008 The country is swept up in Obama-mania, the candidate who promises immediate withdrawal from Iraq just as we are winning the war. The anger in the streets is palpable. And in the middle of election madness, the hate-filled rhetoric of the anti-war crowd has gone under the radar of the Mainstream Media. Subject: Winter Soldier Action Alert Getting to Talk Radio: Sometime this week (and possibly as early as tomorrow morning) American Thinker will simultaneously publish three articles related to Winter Soldier. There will be one each from Scott Swett and myself on WSI and media, from 1971 to 2008 respectively. I don't yet know what the other will be or who is the author, but it will be favorable to our side. Rush Limbaugh routinely...

Washington, D.C., March 4, 2008 A national coalition of pro-troop and veteran organizations is gathering in the Washington area next week to oppose a planned reenactment of Sen. John Kerrys infamous Winter Solider anti-Vietnam War event that, like its predecessor, will feature testimony alleging atrocities committed by American troops this time in Afghanistan and Iraq. Eagles Up www.eaglesup.us and other organizations are taking aim at Winter Soldier II, patterned after a similar event staged by Massachusetts Sen. John Kerrys Vietnam Veterans Against the War in 1971. Although most of the veterans who testified in Kerrys event a generation ago...

This week in Silver Springs, Maryland about 100 members of the Iraq Veterans Against the War, discharged veterans opposed to the Global War on Terror, will spend three days publicly revealing their knowledge of American war crimes at an event dubbed Winter Soldier II. In addition to media attention they hope to generate, the veterans may find themselves getting attention from federal prosecutors armed with a relatively new law that can send them to the penitentiary, knowledgeable lawyers say. As the name suggests, Winter Soldier II is not the first time disaffected veterans have protested the war they fought in....

By Jeff Cobb Wed March 5, 2008 Having started in Philadelphia Saturday morning, the soldiers marched up Lancaster Avenue, and camped in Bryn Mawr that night. Their destination that they would reach the next day was the National Memorial Arch at Valley Forge. The group consisted of about 25 Iraq war veterans and active duty personnel. They wore desert camouflage and toted packs. But they were not performing a military function. They were war protesters. Accompanied by a photographer, a videographer...

In November 2006, Jason Wayne Washburn was a member of the 3/1 Marines Weapons Company in Haditha. Today he is a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Washburn wasn't in Haditha the morning of November 19th, and didnt see what happened. But is coming to Washington to testify about it anyway. He will be part of Winter Soldier II on March 13-16. By late that evening, at the suggestion of a friend, I had gotten the on-line petition entitled âAppeal to the Senate Armed Service Committeeâ up, and it has been there for less than two full days. Many of the hundreds of signatories have made comments. Many of those show how truly appalled people are that the...

From March 13-16, 2008, members of the antiwar group Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) will gather in Washington, DC to testify against the US military at a protest event called Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan. The name Winter Soldier is taken from the infamous 1971 event at which members of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) related gruesome stories of crimes they claimed to have participated in or witnessed. The VVAW insisted that rape, torture and murder were standard practices for the US military in Vietnam. Organizers of the new IVAW tribunal, which is supported by several former...

IN A PAGE-ONE STORY published Sunday, January 13, 2008, "Across America, Deadly Echoes of Foreign Battles," the New York Times reported on homicides by veterans of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Seven Times reporters contributed to the lengthy story, which was co-authored by Deborah Sontag and Lizette Alvarez. The Times "found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing in this country, or were charged with one, after their return from war." All but one case involved male veterans. They speculated that their research "most likely uncovered only the minimum number of such cases,...

WINDER, GA - A Winder soldier accused of killing a detainee in Iraq will face third-degree murder charges, despite a military investigator's recommendation that those charges be dropped. The Army might be using Spc. Christopher Shore, 25, of Winder and other soldiers as scapegoats to satisfy world opinion about the U.S. presence in Iraq, Sen. John Douglas, R-Social Circle, said. "I am concerned because there is a number of these high profile cases coming out of Iraq and it appears there is a good degree of trying to sacrifice some of our guys in order to satisfy world opinion," Douglas...

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 29 (OneWorld) - U.S. war veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan have announced they're planning to descend on Washington, DC this March to testify about war crimes they committed or personally witnessed in Iraq. "The war in Iraq is not covered to its potential because of how dangerous it is for reporters to cover it," said Liam Madden, a former Marine and member of the group Iraq Veterans Against the War. "That's left a lot of misconceptions in the minds of the American public about what the true nature of military occupation looks like." Iraq Veterans Against the...

Senator John F. Kerry already has a Democratic opponent for his U.S. Senate seat. He is not from the party's right since there is barely anyone sitting in those seats in blue Massachusetts. Kerry's antagonist is Ed O'Reilly, a Gloucester lawyer who, according to the Wednesday Boston Globe, is targeting Kerry from the anti-Iraq war left. And, lo and behold, he wants to know the truth about Kerry's military record and has questions himself about the Swift Boat record and the Swift Boat ads. Besides, like a lot of the senator's tormentors, he is suspicious about whether Kerry is really...

Heres a burning question no one is asking: Whither John F. Kerry? He is his partys most recent presidential nominee. He came tantalizingly close to winning. And yet no one is looking for him to put his stamp on the 2008 Democratic primary or wondering aloud who hell endorse even though Al Gore campaign manager Donna Brazile says that in the early-state contests, most of the voters would be thrilled to know who Kerry would back and why. But the lack of an audible clamor for an endorsement by Kerry is more than a bit deceiving, as is the...

The tale of Army Private Scott Thomas Beauchamp, the discredited "Baghdad Diarist" for the discredited New Republic magazine, is an old tale: Self-aggrandizing soldier recounts war atrocities. Media outlets disseminate soldier's tales uncritically. Military folks smell a rat and poke holes in tales too good (or rather, bad) to be true. Soldier's ideological sponsors blame the messengers for exposing anti-war fraud. Beauchamp belongs in the same ward as John F. Kerry, the original infectious agent of the toxic American disease known as Winter Soldier Syndrome. The ward is filling up. U.S. military investigators concluded this week that Beauchamp concocted allegations...

Kerry says he deserves 2nd chance in '08 1 hour, 29 minutes ago Sen. John Kerry says he deserves a second chance if he decides to take another crack at becoming president. DES MOINES, Iowa --Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry lashed out Sunday against a group that bashed him during his last run at the White House. Kerry, who made a weekend appearance in northwest Iowa, said he is concerned that Swift Vote Veterans for Truth is again resorting to "the politics of fear and smear." The group, financed by Texas conservatives, ran commercials questioning his claim of being a decorated Vietnam veteran -- the centerpiece of his presidential campaign in 2004. "We're not going to give them an ounce of daylight," said Kerry, who is considering another run at the Democratic presidential...

Weinstein Co. buys Dixie Chicks docu By Gregg Goldstein NEW YORK -- Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck's politically charged documentary "Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing" has been picked up for worldwide distribution by the Weinstein Co. The film revolves around the aftermath of singer Natalie Maines' statement at a 2003 London concert, where she said, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." It chronicles death threats, political attacks and radio boycotts against the band, and that could...

<p>I got word (from an anonymous source) a week ago that Code Pink was going to have another Moonbat parade in DC on Flag Day (June 14th for those of you in Rio Linda), to celebrate the 2500th US military death in Iraq. It didn't matter to Gael Murphy when she announced the parade that the death toll might not be at 2500; she must have been really bummed by Zarqawi's untimely demise on June 7th (HOOAH! and AirPower!) and needed to do something to lift her out of the funk she was in. And a blood dance was just the ticket, apparently.</p>

The puff piece starts out: John Kerry starts by showing the entry in a log he kept from 1969: Feb 12: 0800 run to Cambodia. Right off the bat, this is the first piece where the Swift Boat Vets were 100% correct. At the time, John Kerry stated that his trip took place on Christmas Eve in 1968. The SBV were right at the time, he was NOT iN Cambodia on Christmas Eve of 1968. Kerry had said that this moment was seared into him. After the Vets came out, Kerry had his personal biographer come out and it changed...

WASHINGTON -- As Senator John F. Kerry prepared to make a return to presidential-style politics with a classic day of New Hampshire campaigning, he said that the 2004 run left him tougher and more eager to fight. And I did," Kerry said in an interview in his Senate office on Thursday. ''There's a very different John Kerry now who is absolutely crystal clear about how I communicate what I need...

Winter Soldier is a documentary which one experiences, instead of simply viewing. Over three days in January and February 1971, just a couple months before Lieutenant William Calley would be sentenced to life in prison for the My Lai Massacre (he would eventually serve less than four years), a group of Vietnam War veterans convened at a Howard Johnson in Detroit to testify about the atrocities they had witnessed or partaken in while serving in Vietnam. The conference was titled The Winter Soldier Investigation, after Thomas Paine: These are the times that try mens souls. The summertime soldier and the...
