Reflections on spending a day at a state fair... Wisconsin holds its state fair in West Allis, a close-in suburb of Milwaukee, in the state’s southeast corner. This makes it a more convenient state fair for Chicago’s north suburbanites than our own Illinois state fair in Springfield, so one sees a number of fellow Chicagoans munching on funnel cakes and riding the giant slide every year. State Fair: it’s not just for farmers anymore. But even so, it is largely about farmers. The state fair is many things, a microcosm of our people, our commerce, and our culture. Annual attendance...

This morning, Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter appeared on Face The Nation, where she discussed Obamacare’s $700 billion cuts to Medicare. She touted those cuts as an “achievement”: Well, you know ask the wealthy to pay a little bit more. Cut waste from the government. Reform Medicare. More than $300 billion in savings from Medicare. On top of the savings we’ve already achieved. You know I heard Mitt Romney deride the $700 billion cuts in Medicare that the president achieved through health care reform. This is how Paul Ryan’s selection has already shifted the debate. Now the Obama campaign...

Gov. Scott Walker gave vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan a resounding endorsement today and joked it's another sign of a "cheesehead revolution." "If there was a Paul Ryan fan club, I'd be president," Walker said the morning after he learned Mitt Romney picked Ryan as his running mate. Walker indicated he knew Ryan would be the nominee last night. Walker told reporters in Wauwatosa that he and Ryan "texted back and forth" last night and that as Walker said his nightly prayers last evening, "at the top of my list was Paul Ryan and his family." Walker also said he...

The Drudge Report singled out political writer Ryan Lizza of The New Yorker as having the unintentionally hilarious first spin on the reported pick of Paul Ryan to be Romney's running mate. Lizza immediately started to "tally the risks." "For one thing, Ryan has no significant private-sector experience," he wrote. He wrote this with zero ackowledgment of Obama's private-sector experience scooping mint-chip at Baskin-Robbins. If the rest of the media follows this line, this is going to be shamelessly biased: Besides summer jobs working at McDonaldÂ’s or at his familyÂ’s construction company, or waiting tables as a young Washington staffer,...

It didn’t take long for Team Romney to go on offense over the despicable attack ad from Priorities USA Action that strongly implied that Mitt Romney was responsible for the death of a spouse laid off by GST — several years before her diagnosis, and long after Romney left Bain Capital’s active management. Today the Romney campaign released a new TV-ready ad that attacks Barack Obama for “scraping bottom” and asks, “What does it say about a president’s character that tries to use the tragedy of a woman’s death for political gain?” The ad title is “America Deserves Better,” but...

Representative Ryan is consistently being promoted on social media networks and by the Republican Party of Wisconsin and the nationwide “free market” group Americans for Prosperity. That’s why Ryan’s 2007 Republican Liberty Caucus Liberty Index score, which ranks members of Congress on their voting record from a constitutional perspective, was 91% on economic issues but only 56% on social issues. After the Democratic Party's failure to recall Wisconsin's Gov. Scott Walker, their consolation prize was control of the state senate, by one vote. Senate control would only have lasted until November, when yet another election (this time a regularly scheduled one) would have thrown 16 seats into question again, but it was a meager something for the millions liberals spent, at least. As of last night, meager something may be nothing. Moderate Democratic Senator Tim Cullen declared Tuesday he will no longer caucus with Democrats, possibly taking the Senate back to dead even again, even as Democrats are moving into new...

State Sen. Tim Cullen, a moderate Democrat from Janesville, broke with his party's caucus Tuesday, saying he may become an independent over what he felt were political "insults" by the Senate majority leader. Cullen said he made his decision, announced to the rest of the caucus by email, after Sen. Mark Miller, D-Monona, slighted him with committee assignments. Every senator in the caucus was given at least two committee leadership positions. Cullen has none. Miller said in a statement Tuesday that Cullen turned down an "important" committee overseeing small business and tourism. The immediate result of the defection is not...

A federal appeals court ruled Monday that two Wisconsin high schools violated the U.S. Constitution by holding graduations in a church -- among the most recent decisions in a long-running debate about the separation of church and state. A three-judge panel from the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in September the schools did nothing wrong by hold graduation in Elmbrook Church, in the southeastern part of the state. However, the full 7th Circuit reversed the panel, ruling Monday the ceremonies were unconstitutional and noting students were exposed to religious messages in the form of a giant cross that hung...

Cougar sighted in Buffalo CountyMONDOVI (AP) — A cougar is roaming western Wisconsin’s Buffalo County. The cougar was photographed by an outdoorsman using a trail camera on land between Gilmanton and Mondovi after dark Saturday, July 14th. A biologist from the Wisconsin DNR verified the sighting after discovering tracks in the area. It’s only the second verified cougar sighting in Wisconsin this year. The DNR has been able to confirm visits from just six male cougars to the state since 2008. • California, look to Wisconsin (Cities hoping to avoid bankruptcy should look east for ideas)

Now that three California cities have declared bankruptcy, perhaps it's time to consider the lessons of Wisconsin. One of the reasons Wisconsin Democrats couldn't unseat Republican Gov. Scott Walker in the state's recall election was that his challenger exemplified how Walker's narrowing of collective bargaining privileges for government workers benefited the state. As mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett had relied on Walker's reforms to balance his city's budget. And Barrett wasn't alone among Wisconsin officials. Walker comfortably defeated Barrett in large part because in the 11 months that the governor's reforms were in effect, Wisconsinites got a good glimpse of...

This story dropped Friday night, via National Review’s Robert Costa. I’m reliably informed that Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the Budget Committee chairman, has submitted paperwork to the Romney campaign. Sources confirm that he is being vetted for the vice-presidential nomination. Ryan, one of the GOP’s brightest young stars, is clearly a favorite of Romney allies. But some top Republican officials are wary of plucking him from the House, where he is the party’s most influential voice on fiscal issues. Earlier this week, Romney campaigned with Ryan in Janesville, Wis., Ryan’s hometown. Ryan previously stumped for Romney in late March...

At this point of the 2012 race, these seven states should be a lock and/or a little easier for Mitt Romney to flip from the 2008 Map.We can all assume that North Carolina,Indiana,Michigan,New Hampshire and Florida are a lock for Romney,we still need to wait and see future polling in Wisconsin and Iowa. Now this doesn't include Ohio and Pennsylvania. In your opinion, do you feel Romney will take all of these seven states and show O'Bozo and Moochelle the door in January?
