Haaretz has obtained a copy of a letter that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas intends to send to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Passover, in which he accuses Netanyahu of undermining the Palestinian Authority. According to both Israeli and Palestinian sources, an envoy headed by Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad will deliver the letter, which places responsibility for the freeze in negotiations on Israel, during a meeting with Netanyahu over the Passover holiday. Photo “We entered a contractual agreement with international backing in order to bring the Palestinian people from occupation to independence,” Abbas wrote in the letter. “Currently, and...

Four-year-old Aasia, five-year-old Aqsa and four-year-old Junaid were beaten with sticks and were forced to lie under the sun with three bricks placed over their chests and legs after their teacher, Qari Asghar, got to know that they had plucked flowers from the garden. Following the declaration of the State of Israel in 1948 numerous Arab countries expelled their Jewish citizens and seized their assets - forcing them to become refugees in Israel. Foreign ministry officials note that 850,000 Jewish refugees lost billions of dollars in assets and were forced to begin anew in Israel with only what they could carry on their backs. The officials added that while Arabs nations have perpetuated the status of "Palestinian refugees" in their nations for generations in...

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, in a policy U-turn, on Saturday named its deputy leader and businessman Khairat al-Shater as its presidential candidate for a vote in May after initially pledging it would not run for the nation's top job. The Brotherhood said it changed tack after reviewing other candidates in the race and after parliament, where its Freedom and Justice Party controls the biggest bloc, was unable to meet "the demands of the revolution", a reference to its mounting criticism of the ruling army's handling of the transition. Given the Brotherhood's strong showing in the parliamentary election and its broad grass-roots...

San Francisco may be known for antiwar movements and peace rallies, but when local law enforcement agencies needed help with supplies, they've turned to the U.S. military. Over the past two decades, San Francisco authorities have acquired infrared devices, combat helmets, chemical protective gloves, vehicles and even a boat as discarded hand-me-downs free of charge from the Department of Defense. In total, the San Francisco police and sheriff's departments have taken $1.4 million in equipment, from a $20 pair of evidence boxes to "climber's equipment" worth $325,000 in 1996. Several other government agencies in California also have tapped the vast...

Jeffrey Piccolella, 27, and Nicholas Anthony Puccio, 25, were arrested just before midnight. The Palm Beach County men have been charged with criminal mischief and use of a firearm while under the influence. A front desk...

As the post-mortem of the French-born 23-year-old jihadist of Algerian origin, Mohamed Merah, unfolds in the media alongside the official investigation into his bloody deeds in Toulouse and Montauban, a critical question of strategic importance remains unasked. French authorities knew Merah travelled twice to Pakistan and Afghanistan, spent time in the jihadi-infested tribal region of Waziristan, and there received further indoctrination and training in the use of firearms. Since his return from Pakistan, Merah was under police surveillance, as was his older brother Abdelkader, known for his role in the recruiting of young men for jihad. Moreover, as some investigative...
