A very moving and interesting story via "The Banty Rooster". Below an excerpt from an email by a doctor in Iraq concerning the visit by Donald Rumsfeld in Mosul, Iraq. He stopped by the hospital there and visited a wounded soldier. Iris Chang, whose haunting childhood memories of oral stories about the rape and slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians at the hands of Japanese soldiers compelled her to write an acclaimed book about the atrocity, was found dead Tuesday from a self-inflicted gunshot. Chang apparently drove down a road south of Los Gatos and shot herself to death in her car. Santa Clara County Deputy Terrance Helm said a motorist driving Tuesday morning on Highway 17 south of The Cats restaurant in unincorporated Los Gatos and noticed a car a short distance down a private water district road....

US troops wound Syrians in border clash By David Rennie in Washington (Filed: 24/06/2003) United States special forces wounded at least five Syrian border guards as they pursued a convoy thought to be carrying senior members of Saddam Hussein's regime, it emerged yesterday. The commandos launched an air and ground assault on convoy of six or seven vehicles speeding towards the Syrian border last week. The attack initially raised speculation that Saddam Hussein or his sons might have been killed. Five Syrian border guards are reported to remain in US military hands in Iraq, where they are receiving medical treatment....

'45 Moscow hostages died from bullet wounds' October 29 2002 at 11:21AM Moscow - Forty-five of the 117 hostages killed during the Moscow hostage drama died from gunshot wounds, Interfax reported on Tuesday, quoting the Moscow prosecutor. The statement contradicted earlier statements that 115 people had succumbed to a powerful gas used by special forces in their operation to rescue more than 800 hostages held by Chechen rebels in a Moscow theater. Prosecutor Mikhail Avdyukov said that 43 hostages were shot dead during the rescue operation while two others were killed before the raid by special forces early on Saturday....
