Good power quality can be defined as a steady supply voltage that stays within the prescribed range, steady a.c. frequency close to the rated value, and smooth voltage curve waveform (resembles a sine wave). In general, it is useful to consider power quality as the compatibility between what comes out of an electric outlet and the load that is plugged into it. The term is used to describe electric power that drives an electrical load and the load’s ability to function properly. Without the proper power, an electrical device (or load) may malfunction, fail prematurely or not operate at all....
  • Regulators expand their authority, play politics with carbon at ratepayer expense [ Colorado]

In a decision that evokes former President Obama’s environmental agenda, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on March 23, 2017, expanded its authority in a way that’s likely to drive up electricity rates. Every four years, Xcel Energy undergoes a resource planning process that outlines their ability to meet ratepayers’ electricity demand. They present portfolios containing cost analyses regarding the utility’s generation, and the Commission selects the “lowest cost resources available to provide the company with enough capacity and energy to in turn be able to provide customers with reliable electricity.” However, in the 2016 Energy Resource Plan, the Public...

Article Subtitle: Utility says city's filing 'ignores state law and is premature' "Boulder initiated long-threatened condemnation proceedings against Xcel Energy on Thursday, filing a legal petition seeking to acquire through eminent domain portions of the company's electric distribution network to serve as the backbone of a future municipal utility." ...

Xcel Energy on Tuesday announced its single largest increase in wind generation in the Upper Midwest, saying it will add three large wind farms in Minnesota and North Dakota. The additional 600 megawatts of electricity, enough to serve 180,000 homes, is a 33 percent increase over the Minneapolis-based utility’s existing wind capacity of 1,800 megawatts in the region. Xcel, which serves 1.2 million electric customers in Minnesota, said new wind generation is priced so competitively right now that customers will save $180 million during the 20-year life of the projects compared with electricity generated from existing power plants. The new...

Xcel Energy Inc. will seek to phase out subsidies for solar power and spend more to help customers conserve energy in Minnesota. The Minneapolis-based utility said Friday that it will reduce spending on its popular Minnesota Solar Rewards program to $2.5 million in 2013 -- half its current level -- before its elimination. The program has helped 560 Minnesota homes and businesses install solar arrays since 2010. • Xcel wins right to charge for SmartGrid City ( CO )

An administrative law judge for the Colorado Public Utilities Commission has approved Xcel Energy Inc.’s SmartGrid City project, and will allow the utility to charge Colorado customers $44.5 million to cover costs associated with the project. In his ruling, Adams said Xcel must keep information obtained from customers using the Smart Grid system private, and the utility must track intellectual property or patent rights that rise from the project. When Xcel launched SmartGrid City in March 2008, the utility billed the project as a $100 million test of various technologies that would upgrade the electricity grid in Boulder. Xcel thought...

It's such a respectable name for an outfit dedicated to character assassination: Accountability for Colorado. With such respectable men and women behind the respectable front, too. They include two of Colorado's richest citizens, Tim Gill and Pat Stryker, as well as the Colorado Education Association, the AFL-CIO and the corporate leadership of Xcel Energy and Comcast. Gill and Stryker each gave the independent political committee $75,000 in recent months — pocket change for them, perhaps, but serious political money — while the CEA chipped in $105,000, the AFL-CIO $50,000, and Xcel and Comcast 10 grand each. For what purpose? In...

Dick Kelly, CEO of Xcel Energy Inc., is irked that Congress hasn't raised his taxes. "We need a price on carbon," said Kelly, who runs a multistate utility in the vanguard of next-generation efficiency and cleaner-energy programs. Kelly, Duke Power CEO Jim Rogers and other utility executives have been expecting Congress to pass cap-and-trade legislation, which would effectively place a tax on carbon emissions.

If Boulder is serious about meeting the goal it set in 2002 when city leaders agreed to meet the Kyoto Protocol -- reducing greenhouse gas emissions 7 percent below 1990 levels -- it's time for city officials to play hardball in their negotiations with Xcel Energy. That's the message a group of business, community and environmental leaders hope to convey to the Boulder City Council on Monday when they meet at the Stazio Ballfields to listen to speakers rally the crowd from a pile of faux coal. With the slender towers of the Valmont Coal Plant as a backdrop, the...

A 23-year-old Michigan man faces up to 10 years in jail for illegally possessing bombs, which he allegedly intended to use to destroy the Xcel Energy Center during the Republican National Convention. Matthew Bradley DePalma, of Flint, Mich., was charged Aug. 30 with one count of possession of firearms. According to his criminal complaint, DePalma had several Molotov cocktails in his possession a week before the start of the RNC. DePalma had been under investigation by federal investigators after he attended a protester conference in Wisconsin in July. Officials said DePalma went to the Hennepin County Library on Aug. 18...

New York's uber-liberal attorney general, Andrew Cuomo, has strong-armed Xcel Energy into fanning the flames of global warming alarmism, the New York Times reports. Cuomo, who was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Bill Clinton, pressed Xcel to disclose to investors detailed information regarding the risks that global warming supposedly poses to its business. This new corporate disclosure requirement will help green groups blackmail energy companies into cutting the greenhouse gas emissions that supposedly contribute to global warming. "This really takes it another step, by making it a settlement agreement that should have an impact across the industry,"...

In lawsuits filed against utilities, some farmers contend stray voltage from overloaded power lines nearby has killed their cattle. Xcel Energy argues the cow deaths could be blamed on other factors. As dead cow No. 79 lay stiff in a tractor scoop one recent cold morning on Greg Siewert's dairy farm, it was pretty clear in the nearby sick barn which would become No. 80. Wobbly on three legs, the fourth swollen and kinked at her side, one cow stared out below stooped shoulders, her black and white coat hanging dull and low from a grim row of ribs. "It's...

One of the nation's largest wind farms will soon be constructed... 200 giant turbines will dot the high plains landscape over a 30 square-mile area. Some will stand more than 300 feet in height. The new wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 90-thousand homes. Headed by Greenlight Energy Inc. of Charlottesville, Virginia. Xcel Energy plans to purchase electricity from the project.

I was one of the lucky attendees at the President's rally in St. Paul yesterday. We had Laura Ingram as the host, which was a total delightful surprise, then we had some great speakers including Senator Coleman. The President arrived when his bus pulled into the arena--quite a sight to see. The President's speech was general, but very inspiring. I have some pics up that I took and that I was able to find online posted over at Hopefully I can find more.
