My brother has told me several times that, as a libertarian, I should be far more sympathetic to the ideas of liberalism than to those of conservatism. I believe his rationale is that libertarians generally agree with liberals about more issues than they do with conservatives. Of course, Ive never debated that point because I agree with it. Its just that some of the conservative issues always seemed to rank higher on my personal issues list than those of liberals. After almost 7 years of a so-called neocon in the Executive and 12 years of conservatives controlling Congress, my opinions have changed.
Its not that I dont still find conservative issues regarding liberty more important, its just that I dont find very many real conservatives holding office. The whole feigned outrage with the most conservative member of Congress after the last debate drives this home. It brings the lying hypocrisy of the neocons right out into the light for the whole world to see. It shows their big tent to be a reverse TARDISthat is, it looks much bigger on the outside than it really is on the inside. Read the rest of this entry »

“And, when we use government to “fix” morality, we surrender the field to those who want to use government to “fix” everything else.”
Therein lies the problem. Once the juggernaut gets rolling, it’s tough to stop.
I was stunned to read a little critique of Rothbard’s ideas here:
http://www.spunk.org/texts/otherpol/critique/sp001283.txt
It told me that Libertarians have a unique idea of Natural Law. According to Rothbard, the Libertarian idea of Natural Law is the only legitimate one. All other thinking about it is fiction. Libertarian “Natural Laws” are more akin to moral or legal laws. And when they make such a claim, they enter the realm of a cult. In doing so they replace God’s Law, which is the basis of our Bill of Rights and the basis of Liberty, with Natural Law. They are a Natural Law cult pure and simple which works in the realm of sociobiology that bases its reality on a theoretical conclusion of man’s human nature. It is a Trojan Horse which is at its core a denial of human freedom.
Well, yes ... belief in God certainly does conflict with libertarian notions of "self-ownership."
Remember, he’s a Republican now :)
If we take God's Law out of the argument, then there will never be any agreement. And no nation of free men. That is why we are a nation under God, which is something the Liberal Left and their Libertarian friends, do not accept. Both philosophies are based upon humanism and both, in their godless way, pave the way for the disrespect for the rule of law and the denial of human freedom. A society that does not respect the rule of law uses arbitrary decisions of rulers based upon whatever factors they believe are important to their decision at the time. This leads to unjust and inconsistent decisions that override free will and the freedom of the citizen.
I asked you to stop posting to me. And you're still going at it, still hurling the insults. Do you ever stop?!
He may be correct. You come off as ill advised and contradictory almost to the point of hypocrisy. Your personal page here would lead one to suspect that you are a lover of liberty, but conversing with you makes one think that you are more of a lover of the progressive era and its present nanny state hangover.
That, and you seem like a thin skinned whiner. Oh well, it will just give you fuel to complain about those meanie libertarians that made you (hopefully) second guess your principles, but most probably just raised your blood pressure and made your head heart.
d'oh!
have a great day!
Only those who either can't, or won't, see reason. I'm not asking you to like libertarian ideology, but I also won't allow slanderous statements and misrepresentations either.
It's a free country. Stop posting to me, and I'll stop posting to you...
Actually, there is no conflict between Natural Law and the Bill or Rights. A Right to self defense against predators? A Right to keep anything you make from your own labor? A Right to say and believe as you want?
If anything, God's laws are in conflict with the Bill of Rights. How can you have a "freedom of religion" if your Judeo-Christian God has stipulated that "thou shalt have no other Gods before me".
You are trying to claim a dichotomy where none exists.
Yeah... I noticed that. ;-)
Personal “wants” like being uncivil, obnoxious, offensive, or a menace. As opposed to accepting limits on behavior and duties within the community.
That’s why I choose Him over political identity or constitution
And while the BoR protects your Right to do so, the 10 Commandments don’t... That was my point. Trying to tie the BoR to the 10C doesn’t work from a logical standpoint.
Tell you the truth, I don’t need government protection to love the King of heaven and earth. That’s the point of the killing of Christians in Rome. All I need is the choice. You cannot take a man’s choice away from him.
Anyway, no man can follow the 10 Commandments. Christianity is about salvation and following righteousness. The righteous will do right and the wicked will do wicked.
