"The term ''Civil War veteran'' includes a person who served in the military or naval forces of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and the term ''active military or naval service'' includes active service in those forces. ??????? Weren't there any Yankee left to become of that Civil War -- (known more accurately in the south as The Waw of Nawthren Agression.)?

You intentionally post something you know is hateful and then pout about how you are just using it to show how hateful the South is. You are a bigot.

Your outburst can go both ways though. I've been treated very badly in the North, but been surprised at the hospitality in the South. Mind you, not all areas of the South...or the North for that matter. We can stereotype people and places all day long, but that serves no purpose.

Well, I’m glad to see at least on person got my point. If you say one negative thing about the South, you have a barrage of people going nuts. I’ve never seen more defensive, provincial people, who generally have nothing but negative things to say about my home state, yet somehow I’m the “elitist”.

"No, it was one American soldier and two traitors.

Yeah, because advancing the notion of Federalism was worth the lives of 600,000 Americans.

Ok, so the US and the Confederate States would be allies and great friends. That’s a warm and fuzzy thought, especially for the slaves that would not have been freed.

You are correct, I’ve not read that book, but after your comments, it doesn’t sound like a book that I would waste time reading.

Similar situation in my family history. My Great Grandfather fought for the Union, while his brother in law (husband to his sister) fought for the south. I can not imagine the emotional toil it took when families choose different sides.

I’m not pouting, I’m laughing, because it worked. I’m not gonna deny that there is some anti-Southern sentiment among many Northerners, myself included, but I wanted to make the point it’s a two way street. There’s plenty of “elitist snobs” in the South - you need look no further than this thread (or a mirror, it seems in your case).

Would you mind telling me the year and name of the court case that decided that?

Texas v. White (74 US 700) 1869.

So you don’t deny you made a hateful statement yourself then. And what have I stated that marks me as a snob? You certainly protest loudly.

the FACT is that slavery was DYING by 1960. absent the war, it wouldn't have lasted another 5-10 years as it was quickly becoming UNprofitable! (the slavers cared nothing about anything but PROFIT!)

slavery was an EXCUSE & NOTHING more on lincoln's part for making WAR.

lincoln was a RACIST & a HATER of "non-whites"- like me for instance, as he called AIs "red-skinned savages without souls, who must be driven from our dominions or EXTERMINATED to the last one".

face it "Ldy", you've been LIED TO & made a FOOL of by the leftists & DAMNyankees of academia.

by all means, do NOT read THE REAL LINCOLN. the LEFTISTS wouldn't want your mind to be opened.

Remember Gen. Joseph Wheeler!   The former Confederate General volunteered during the Spanish American War and commanded the cavalry division in Cuba which included Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders. He went on to serve in the Philippines under General Arthur MacArthur and is one of the few former Confederate officers buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

My daughter graduated from Joseph Wheeler High School (wiki).

It was meant to be provacative.

Nonsense. It was meant to be insulting; hence, the term "traitor."

Please cite the dates and details of the treason trials that back up your "provocative" statement.

There was a composition and reconciliation of great dimensions and august authorship in the 1890's, when the actual veterans of that great war composed their former differences, led by men like Joshua Chamberlain, Joe Johnston, and James Longstreet.

The problem is that if Joshua Chamberlain, or any other Union hero, was able to come to life and try and defend the Union cause on this forum then you would be right there calling him a commie Clintonista, 4CJ would be calling him a liberal, and stand watie would be calling him a damned Yankee so-and-so. So with all due respect, you are about the last person around to be taking anyone to task about forgiveness and reconcilliation.

So the ruling was made after the close of the CW. As this reference indicates, New England considered seceding en masse during the War of 1812:
http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/9-18-2005-77051.asp

I’m sure DiLorenzo would argue that the decision was just one of the first steps to an over-reaching federal behemoth, the one Conservatives today are fighting to reduce to the bare essentials, as our Founding Fathers intended.

Thanks for the reference.

Absolutely. Does not matter if they wore blue or gray. They were all patriots.

If your *new* definition is what we go by-

They were soldiers of a seperate nation. They were not Ameircans by virtue of this seperation.

To be a traitor, one must claim friendly ties to the country they fight.

The fact that the enemy was the Confederate States of America should lead you the right way from there.

“I’m not pouting, I’m laughing, because it worked”

Well, you have to make allowances for us slow-thinking folk in the south. See, we aren’t as so-fist-ee-ka-ted as you folk north of the Mason-Dixon line.

When you deliberately denigrate your American history by disparaging soldiers, Americans, that fought on both sides, we simple minded folk can’t really tell the subtle differences between the of behavioral research, and sh!t-stirring.

But thanks for explaining it to everyone so graciously.
