Russia has lost nearly 1500 Soldiers in the last day, making it the bloodiest day for the Russian army since World War 2. Ukrainian forces have stopped the Russians at Avdiivka, Kupyansk, and are still attacking the Russians near Robotyne. The Situation is so bad Putin has visited the command headquarters at Rostov on Don to get a real look at the situation.

Israel has not begun the ground invasion yet, but attacks are still occurring from both sides, and a US response has not happened yet.

I wish you health, fellow Ukrainians!

Today my team and I are in Kherson region, in Mykolaiv. There are a lot of tasks.

A meeting with the military – Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhny, Chief of the General Staff Shaptala, Commander of the Odesa operational-strategic grouping of troops Hnatov and Commander of the Marines Sodol, Head of the State Border Guard Service, General Deyneko. A special format, a narrow circle. Regarding the situation in Kherson and the region, in the south in general, as well as in Donetsk region – first of all, Avdiivka. I am grateful to all our guys who are holding their ground and destroying the occupier day after day. These days, Russian losses are really impressive, and it is exactly the kind of losses of the occupier that Ukraine needs. We also discussed the Kupyansk direction in Kharkiv region.

I held a meeting in Mykolaiv with the leadership of the region and the city, the military, the law enforcers to discuss the protection of the region, our infrastructure, our ports, corridors in the Black Sea. We also analyzed social issues that are important for Mykolaiv and the cities and villages of the region: energy, heat supply, water supply to Mykolaiv and the region, the quality of water supplied to the city, social services, economic activity. All the things that really need attention at all levels of government.

I am especially grateful to Denmark for their effective support of Mykolaiv, for their sincere assistance to the city, just as we agreed with Prime Minister Frederiksen.

I visited our warriors in Mykolaiv hospital who are undergoing treatment after being wounded in battles. I thanked them for their strength and thanked the doctors for their dedication to their work.

An important report by the regional head of the Security Service of Ukraine on the protection of Mykolaiv and the region from subversive activities of Russia and collaborators. Thank you for your work, guys!

Special attention is paid to protecting the sky from Russian bombs and missiles. We are working to bolster air defense. I thank everyone in the world who helps us with this.

In particular, I spoke with Olaf Scholz – regarding air defense as well. We are working together to ensure that Patriots in the hands of Ukrainian warriors can do more – already this winter. I invited Germany to take part in a meeting of advisors on the Peace Formula, which we are preparing for late October. We also discussed the situation in the Middle East with the Chancellor. I thank Olaf that our agreements are being strictly implemented.

President Biden delivered a very important, indeed historic speech. Yesterday we spoke with him – it was a good conversation, and now there is his address – powerful, timely, one that really adds to our confidence. Thank you for your unwavering support for Ukraine. The democratic world understands how important Ukraine’s resilience is for the freedom of all free nations – and not only in Europe. We can overcome all threats.

The speech by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen the day before is also inspiring. I am grateful to Madam President for her clear call to speed up Ukraine’s path to victory. A call to everyone in Europe and the free world to be as united as possible, as long as it takes to defeat the terrorists who seek to destroy our states and our lives. Europe must prevail, not those who are trying to turn our lives into ruins.

And one more thing.

Today is the 20th anniversary of the intelligence of the Border Guard Service of Ukraine. They are heroic warriors. I had the honor to congratulate them today, to recognize them with state awards. I held a separate meeting with the border guards on the tasks they perform – they perform them effectively. And I am proud that the Border Guard Service of Ukraine and its units are only getting stronger. Glory to all of you, warriors! Glory to our strong nation! And thank you – Kherson, Mykolaiv – for today.

Glory to Ukraine!

The successes of the new grain corridor demonstrate that Russia was an unnecessary link in the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
Russia actively interferes in Ukraine’s religious life, disguising its anti-Ukrainian activities as religious ceremonies. The participation of Russian athletes in international competitions completely contradicts the Olympic principles, the IOC Charter and general norms of morality.

Members of Ukraine War Environmental Consequences: Work Group led by Margot Wallström participate in “United for Justice. United for Nature” conference in Kyiv
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Official website
20 October 2023 - 21:48
https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/chleni-mizhnarodnoyi-robochoyi-grupi-shodo-ekologichnih-nasl-86501

Members of the Ukraine War Environmental Consequences Work Group led by Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margot Wallström took part in the “United for Justice. United for Nature” conference, which began in Kyiv.

The goal of the event is to draw attention to the destructive consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine for the nature, to discuss approaches and lessons learned over the past 20 years in such situations, and to inform about the development of institutional mechanisms, procedures, and standards that are essential for holding those responsible for environmental damage during wartime.

Participants in the conference included members of the Ukraine War Environmental Consequences Work Group, representatives of the Ukrainian government, European Union institutions, the International Criminal Court, the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group, leading experts, and others.

A statement will be adopted based on the outcomes of the dialogue, documenting the main issues, challenges, and prospects.

In a video message to conference participants, Head of the Office of the President Andriy Yermak emphasized the global consequences of the Russian war for the world’s ecosystem and called for considering armed aggression against Ukraine and its impact on the environment in a global context.

“In fact, Russia is not only at war with the Ukrainian state and its people but also with the environment. Nature doesn’t recognize human borders. Therefore, crimes committed against it anywhere affect everyone,” he said.

Andriy Yermak stated that Ukraine is making every effort to draw the attention of the international community to the harm caused by Russian aggression to the environment. A series of international events dedicated to this issue will take place by the end of the year.

Oleksandr Bevz, an advisor to the Head of the Office of the President, who moderated the first session on “Russian Ecocide in Ukraine. A Danger to the Whole World,” noted that most members of the International Work Group are participating in this conference and will share the goals of their activities.

“The Work Group aims to develop a unified approach to assessing the impact of war on the environment, define a framework for fair compensation for environmental damage, and establish principles for environmental restoration,” Oleksandr Bevz added.

Margot Wallström, former Deputy Prime Minister and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, emphasized that the International Work Group, which she co-chairs with Andriy Yermak, has three main tasks: assessing the damage already inflicted on the environment in Ukraine, holding those responsible for the losses, and restoring the natural environment and ecosystems after combat operations.

She expressed her belief that the impact of military actions on the environment should be at the center of not only Ukrainian society’s attention but the entire world’s, as Ukraine is the third-largest grain exporter on the planet, and current events may have economic consequences and even lead to food shortages in vulnerable countries.

“The fate of Ukraine is our fate as well because you are currently fighting the enemy for the sake of the whole world. It is important to explain this to the world. We understand that nature and peace are interconnected. If you harm one component, the other will inevitably suffer. Protect one component, and you protect the other,” Margot Wallström said.

She said that through joint efforts, Ukraine can gain successful experience in overcoming the environmental consequences of war and become an example for others.

Heidi Hautala, Vice President of the European Parliament and former Minister for International Development of Finland, who is also a member of the International Work Group, mentioned that the aspect of environmental protection is important regarding Ukraine’s future accession to the EU.

Therefore, the European Parliament is ready to serve as a platform for consultations on issues related to achieving peace in Ukraine and, specifically, environmental protection.

Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders, former President of Ireland (1990-1997), and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the proper collection of evidence and documenting crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine will contribute to prosecuting cases related to the crime of aggression.

“What Russia has done is an attack on our entire planet because nature is our common treasure. Governments of all countries should protect the environment. That’s why it would be right to hold Russia accountable,” Mary Robinson said.

She said that blowing up the dam at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant was the largest but not the only environmental crime committed by Russia in Ukraine. Mary Robinson also supported the idea of creating a special international tribunal to address the crime of aggression against Ukraine in a format that would allow for holding the highest political leadership of Russia criminally responsible.

Virginijus Sinkevičius, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans, and Fisheries, said that the efforts to hold those responsible for committing environmental crimes should include, among other things, compensation payments and the subsequent restoration of Ukraine’s ecosystems.

“I believe the damages are immense, and they should not be covered by Ukraine or the European Union but by Russia. Our goal is also to ensure that Ukraine rebuilds and becomes even better, and we will also become better,” the EU Commissioner said.

After the panel discussion, members of the International Work Group held a meeting on the sidelines of the conference to discuss further steps and paths of cooperation. Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets and Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin also joined the meeting.

Ruslan Strilets emphasized the importance of creating a Climate Office in Kyiv, which will be responsible for building Ukraine’s climate architecture. He said that in 2024, a pilot project to implement a greenhouse gas emissions trading system is planned. The minister highlighted that this system will generate additional funds for transforming the environmental system in Ukraine.

From his side, Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin emphasized the importance of taking measures to hold Russia accountable for committing environmental crimes in Ukraine. He said that the Office of the Prosecutor General documents each of these crimes, and it is crucial to collaborate with international organizations in this matter.

Andriy Kostin stressed the importance of synergy between the points of the Ukrainian Peace Formula of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the restoration of justice and ecological safety. He also highlighted the significance of continuous cooperation with civil society in implementing the issues discussed during the conference. According to him, it is important to send a signal that no aggressor’s crime will go unpunished.

Margot Wallström acknowledged the importance of collaborating with Ukrainian environmental organizations.

She said that the work of the International Work Group demonstrates the significant implications of environmental crimes for both our country and the world. She emphasized the importance of drawing the attention of governments, international organizations, and the expert community to environmental issues. Margot Wallström proposed discussing recommendations for improving environmental legislation.

The Olena Zelenska Foundation is starting a project to restore a children’s creative and sports hub in Borodianka, Kyiv region. The building was destroyed by Russian forces during the occupation of the town in the spring of 2022. The restoration of the facility is planned to receive $1 million in funding. The funds for construction are being provided by the Temerty Family, which has been collaborating with the First Lady of Ukraine’s Foundation since the beginning of the full-scale war.

The President’s wife, along with her Foundation’s team, the director of Ukrainian initiatives of the Temerty Family Foundation, Krystina Waler, and the head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration, Ruslan Kravchenko, visited the site where the children’s center used to be located and discussed the initial steps in implementing the joint project.

“The Temerty Family from Canada is one of the largest contemporary Ukrainian benefactors because they originate from Ukraine and do not forget their roots. The Temerty Family Foundation was one of the first to join forces with the newly established Olena Zelenska Foundation last year.

Our collaboration has allowed us to support and provide the necessary assistance to large foster families who have lost their homes, residents of the occupied territories throughout this year. Now, we have new joint projects, so we will be able to help even more Ukrainians,” the First Lady said.

The ruined building housed the Borodianka Center for Children and Youth Creativity, the Children and Youth Sports School, and the Children’s School of Arts. “Before the full-scale war began, Borodianka was a hub for sports and extracurricular education not only for local children but also for children from neighboring communities. The children’s creative center was completely destroyed by the aggressor army. Together with the Temerty Family Foundation, we are investing in the future of our children,” Nina Horbachova, the director of the Olena Zelenska Foundation, said.

The Temerty Family Foundation has been consistently supporting projects of the Olena Zelenska Foundation. A year ago, the Canadian foundation was one of the first to join in providing humanitarian assistance to residents of the occupied regions of Ukraine. Thanks to the Temerty Family Foundation’s contribution of $500,000, the Foundation provided support to residents of the occupied Kharkiv region. This support included the purchase of powerful generators to ensure the uninterrupted operation of hospitals, educational institutions, and critical infrastructure in three districts of the region, as well as the provision of essential items to over 2,000 internally displaced persons.

“Everything goes well for Ukraine”

Of course it does. Everything has been going well for Ukraine for the past 2 years and will continue to do so into the future. Nothing but endless victories in battle.
