Exactly. Russia's objective prior to 2014, and ever since, has been the political and cultural obliteration of Ukraine. No more Ukrainian Orthodox Church, no more Ukrainian language, Russian control of every part of the economy, manpower drafted to the Russian Army, children deported into the Russian interior for "re-education", und-und-und. These are the alternatives Ukraine rejected in 2014.
