BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado woman’s attempt to steal a pickup truck — shortly after she was released from jail on a car theft charge — was thwarted not by officers, nor the truck’s owners, but by her inability to drive a stick shift, Boulder Police said.

The woman had been released from jail on May 3 after being accused of stealing a car a day earlier, and walked down the road until she spotted a pickup truck with the keys inside. She then started the pickup, but apparently discovered she couldn’t manage the manual transmission, so she got out and walked away, leaving the truck to roll forward and strike a fire hydrant, police said.

When I became driving age, my dad insisted that I learn a manual transmission and clutch, oh gawd I grinded the gears.

Oh well in Europe the rental cars are 95% manual transmissions.

Driving a stick is like riding a bike, once you learn you never forget.

My dad wouldn’t let us drive an automatic until we learned on a stick. He made sure all 5 of his kids could drive a standard and to this day, I prefer it, except maybe in bumper to bumper traffic

I taught my kids how to drive a manual. I miss not having one.

My youngest drives a semi. 18 speed I think.

This is totally incredible - like the story is not believable. Where can you buy a truck that has a stick shift, unless this one is so old that it has a stick shift in which case it is not worth stealing unless you are one of those guys like me who will hold onto their manual transission until it is pried out of my cold daed hands. But it is hard to see why someone who couldn’t drive a truck with a stick shift would want to steal one.

"I was taught to drive on stick shift."

After driving manual transmissions for years it took me a while to overcome the urge to push in the clutch after buying my first automatic transmission vehicle.

“Do we look?”

In Boulder? Boulderites really don’t embrace minorities that much despite what they present to the world.

I think Toyota still makes a standard transmission pickup. As for sedans, you’d be surprised. Most are high end of course.

Yes, but it’s got “smart” features, whatever the heck that means.

I learned to use a manual on a 1963 Volvo 544 with 350K on it. It was like trying to find a golfball at the bottom of a pond with a boat oar. My Dad, of course, shifted it without the clutch pedal.

She does not do well in a clutch situation.

I learned on an automatic. My dad then taught me how to drive on a manual. My Toyota truck had a manual transmission. Kept that thing for 25 years.

I preferred driving manual until I got pregnant. Still prefer manual, but most minivans are automatic and I had a busy brood to haul around.

I did the same thing you did. For the first month or so I was reaching for the stick and raising my leg to work a non-existent clutch.
