In the topsy-turvy world of the liberal media, good news is bad news, because good news threatens to bring about the worst news of all from their perspective - the re-election of George W. Bush.
So when the good news of Saddam being put on trial broke yesterday, The Today Show resorted to the ultimate ostrich maneuever and flatly failed to cover the event.
Taken to task over its omission, there was no way that Today could ignore the 'unfortunate' goings-on in Baghdad this morning.
Still, Katie Couric did her earnest best to cast events in the worst possible light for the United States.
Her guest was NY Times reporter John Burns, one of the few journalists permitted in the courtroom.
Burns described Saddam's defiant attitude. This prompted the following gem from Couric (not verbatim - my best approximation):
"To what extent is Saddam's defiance bolstered by anti-American sentiment in Iraq caused by our invasion and occupation of the country?"
That's right. If Saddam, the brutal dictator who murdered hundreds of thousands of his own citizens and invaded Iran and Kuwait is defiant, it's the fault of . . . the United States.
Though Burns has generally, to my knowledge, earned good marks as a journalist, he was all-too-willing to abet Katie's theory. He claimed that "80% of Iraqis strongly condemn the American occupation."
On the other hand, he described any support for Saddam by Iraqis as virtually a mental illness, suggesting that there is barely a family that has not suffered at his hands. Still he claimed that as many Iraqis object to the trial as support it, seeing it as an affront to Iraqi dignity.
In sum, there is no event, no matter how positive, that cannot and will not be spun by the liberal media in the worst possible light for George W. Bush.

I believe I do recall an interview - I think Today did a series on First Ladies in which Laura Bush was of course included. And I'm thinking Katie's interviewed her on other occasions. My recollection is that Katie treated Laura respectfully. I think Couric realizes it would be, from the liberal perspective, counter-productive in the extreme to mistreat such a fine, gracious lady.
Last night on MSNBC Chris Jansing was reading letters from angry Iraqis in this Country. She asked Tom Aspell (in Baghdad) if that was the majority opinion in Iraq. He told her that the majority of Iraqis were quite happy with the situation.
Aspell was on Today this morning, and gave what I found to be a reasonably balanced report. He had clips of reaction from people from around the Arab world, and almost all were glad to see Saddam on trial.
Beautiful infobabes... makes you wonder if they're hired more for looking good on camera than being knowledgeable.
She was hopefull to the bitter end.
You are stalwart and brave for watching this lib ding a ling...No country likes to be occupied and no sane Iraqi would want Saddam back unless they were part of the favored group or brain washed....

There's a new bimbo on MSNBC - I don't know her name - who rivals Katie in coo coo liberal sentiment, combined with the interruptive technique of Chris Matthews (but which she's intellectually not capable of pulling off in the same way).
Yesterday one of her guests made an appropriately critical comment about Saddam's court performance, and the bimbi interrupted with the opener "But to be fair....blah blah..anti-American something or other," as if she thought it her duty to provide an "objective" assessment of Saddam vs. America.
I wish I could recall the precise context, but I flipped the channel immediately and erased it from memory.
Katie is just reverting back to her golden days as a UVA cheerleader. Only thing that has changed is she now cheers for Saddam's team.
I don't watch much MSNBC but will be on the lookout for her. If you do catch her name at some point please drop me a message.

There is no wondering about it .
If Iraq fails to convict him for crimes against their people, we have the sovereignty to take him and convict him for crimes against humanity, outside of Iraq regardless of popular support, this should not even be an issue.
OJ was convicted in his second trial, the civil murder trial, and same will happen to Saddam if he is not found guilty because of "supposed" popular support . OJ was and still is viewed by many as being innocent, big deal Toady show, guilt or innocence is not a popularity contest or should not be decided viewership ratings based upon playing on the emotions of the innocent.
