(Atlanta, Georgia-AP) Oct. 10, 2005 -
Police are investigating suspicious bottles found in a courtyard at Georgia Tech.
The discovery of the bottle containing chemicals led to the evacuation of two dormitories, but students have been allowed back into the buildings.
No serious injuries were reported after the devices were found by a janitor this morning. Officers later found at least two more devices fashioned from plastic bottles.
The worker who found the bottle was picking up trash. He was taken to a clinic for evaluation.
Spokeswoman Amelia Gambino says about 100 students were evacuated from Cloudman and Glenn dormitories. Authorities notified the Department of Homeland Security.
Police are trying to determine what substance was in the bottles.
Ping for a new article about GA Tech - This one is by the AP and is absolutely outrageous. They refuse to even mention that the devices found at GA Tech were explosive devices - just plastice bottles w/ Chemicals!!! I honestly can't believe the audacity of the AP at this point.
If these incidents keep happening at our college campuses and anyone ends up getting hurt the AP will be complicit in the crimes, IMHO. Word needs to get out and our students need to be warned to at the very least keep their eyes and ears open!!!
Yeah, two colleges. I wonder how many others are targeted?
Yeah, no clue about what these 'devices' were supposed to do. Go boom? Create poison gas?
Here's what's being reported out of Tampa, FL:
Terrorist Act on GA Campus - http://www.tampabays10.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=19817
Atlanta - Three explosive devices found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning were part of a "terrorist act," an Atlanta police official said.
One of the devices exploded, injuring the custodian who found them inside a plastic bag. Two others were detonated by a bomb squad.
The custodian suffered ringing to the ears and was treated at a local hospital. The events led to a temporary evacuation Monday morning.
"It is a terrorist act at this point and depending on the outcome of the investigation it potentially could become a federal violation as well," said Major C.W. Moss of the Atlanta Police Department.
The custodian found the three devices about 9 a.m. in a plastic-type garbage bag, Moss said. When he picked up the bag, one exploded, as it was designed to do when handled. The explosives were made up of chemicals placed inside plastic bottles and could have seriously injured someone, officials said. Numerous agencies were on the Georgia Tech campus to search for suspects.
"It will be a joint investigation between the Atlanta Police Department, the Georgia Tech Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Every possible lead will be followed," said Major Moss.
About 100 students were evacuated from the Cloudman and Glenn dormitories, according to school spokeswoman Amelia Gambino
Actually 3 colleges now...
1.) OU Bombing
2.) GA Tech
and
3.) Midvale, CA - 2 to 3 blocks from UCLA

BTW: Here is the email address of the person that posted this article at this station. I don't know how responsible she is as far as deciding what gets put up, but this is ridiculous...

This is a perfect example of irresponsible reporting if I've ever seen one. I'm still tracking down info for the AP in GA.
AP Bureau for Atlanta, GA Contact Info:
(I'm assuming this is out of the Atlanta Bureau as that's where GA Tech is located)

Please let them know that reporting like this is not going to do anyone any good...
Um..plastic bottles...sounds like a baking soda device.
This was discussed earlier here at FR.
Here's the link to the thread, it's rather long though:

The police are calling these "soda bottle bombs". The Maj. of the Atlanta PD who was interviewed said that these devices could be very dangerous if enough of the chemicals were used. Also remember from the OU Bombing case that they confiscated 13 empty plastic bottles from his trunk....
You can hear the detonation of the other 2 devices (along with the rest of the bottles in the bag found) in the video links above.
Here is the text from the article I linked above:
Explosives Found Near Tech Dorms
Three explosive devices found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning were part of a "terrorist act," an Atlanta police official said.
One of the devices exploded, injuring the custodian who found them inside a plastic bag. Two others were detonated by a bomb squad.

"It is a terrorist act at this point and depending on the outcome of the investigation it potentially could become a federal violation as well," said Major C.W. Moss of the Atlanta Police Department.
Under Georgia state law, a terroristic act is described as the release of a "hazardous substance," specifically for "the purpose of causing the evacuation of a building" with "reckless disregard of the risk of causing such terror."
The custodian found the three devices about 9 a.m. in a plastic-type garbage bag, Moss said. When he picked up the bag, one exploded, as it was designed to do when handled. "13 empty plastic bottles from his trunk...."
I misspoke with that statement. It is not known whether they were empty or filled with something. All that is known is that there were 13 plastic bottles taken.
Don't you dare suggest that Muslims were involved. And explosive? Some pesky kid probably just shook up a soda can for a prank.
C'mon, get with the program here!
LOL... (o:
Can't have people know the truth now can we?
Well I guess that means if you have baking soda and plasic bottles in your home, you can be charged with possessing "bomb-making" materials.
"You can hear the detonation of the other 2 devices (along with the rest of the bottles in the bag found) in the video links above."
I just watched and listened to that link. The "explosion" (report) that is heard on the video is the device used by the bomb squad to destroy the other two baking soda/vinegar devices. I have been off-line for a few days and had not heard anything about this so I thank for posting the article. My take is that it was some kids doing what kids do, being idiots and making little "noisemakers" (IMO), without any thought to the possible harm that it could (and did) cause.

I made a "stink bomb" in chem 101 almost 30 years ago, and forced the whole east wing of the lab to evacuate. I just realized that I am an international terrorist. Should I turn myself in after all these years? Is there a statute of limitations?
HA! I have been tracking you all these years and now you have confessed. The gig is up. You will stand tall before the man and answer for this crime.
You could be absolutely correct. However, with the other devices found this week and the threat broadcast by Al Qaeda mentioning targetting kids and using a college-aged American as the spokesman it to me doesn't appear like a harmless prank. Personally, I'd rather err on the side of caution at this point and assume till proven otherwise that this could be a terrorist act (and not just as defined under GA law).
Also, if kids understand that there are serious consequences for these "pranks" (if that's what they are) then maybe there won't be as many "copycat" type situations. At the very least they shouldn't downplay this in the media.
"Um..plastic bottles...sounds like a baking soda device."
I agree. Chances are these "explosive devices" are nothing more than bored kids goofing off with vinegar and baking soda.
Not the smartest thing to do in today's climate, however.
