Yup, baking soda and/or dry ice.
Now, while the OU bombing was/is a serious concern, this has all the earmarks of a boneheaded prank.
You had some great comments on the thread regarding this event yesterday. Thought you may wish to take a look at this article as well.
The guy set off several other bombs around town over the next several months, causing several large fires, before finally being caught. He ended up getting forty years in prison.
Granted we will have to wait for the lab results to come back regarding exactly what type of chemicals were used, but a "terrorism expert" (not sure who) was supposedly on FNC a few days ago and said that there are some types of "soda bottle bombs" that can be made with other chemicals (not dry ice, or acid) and that they can be extremely dangerous.
The devices in this case were "designed to explode when handled". In the fire safety report I read from the NJ Fire Dept. the "dry ice" and other common bottle bombs burst once pressure is built up - whether they are handled or not. This IMHO doesn't sound like a prank...
There is no fooling around with these things as far as I'm concerned. I too have had personal experience as far as pipe bombs are concerned. Some kids threw one on my front lawn a few years ago - thank God they didn't make it right in that case either.
Please see the comments at post #24. I humbly disagree that this was merely a prank. Although I will happily eat crow if I'm proven wrong about this.

At about the same time (in college, of course) I was filling weather balloons with air and stove gas (methane), attaching a fuse and enough weight to keep them from climbing too fast, and letting them go from the roof of my apt building in Boston. One exploded about 1/2 way up the Prudential Building, another one sunk into an alley in Roxbury and blew up. At that point we figured we'd better stop.
The bottle did blow up. Lucky for the maintenance guy. He picked them up with big tongs. I live in Georgia. I hope this is a student prankster, but the police are treating it as a terrorist act.
These were not that type. My brother is a state policeman at Georgia Tech...These thngs were made to go off when handled. The person meant to kill/maim someone- this was no innocent prank.
This sounds like he was taken for a mental evaluation. That's what I thought when I read it. Then you say the bottles exploded, which would require a little more intensive "evaluation."
Unbelievable!
strange that it occured again at a school. Sounds like the left is getting what they want...
WIS TV is in Columbia, South Carolina. Not Georgia.
Even if this were a college student prank, believe that the bad guys are watching the response. The minimal media response and public concern over the Oklahoma bomb (student blows self up) are notable. In our race not to offend people, it seems that Islamic extremist involvement is immediately discounted without a seemingly thorough investigation. The officials do not want to panic the public. I remain concerned that the terrorists are using these responses and American political correctness to plan their next attack.
Look for a mall or maybe a University. However, upsetting the university student environment will not achieve the desired terrorist effect. Right now, the vast majority of higher education students and faculty are anti-war and liberal. Attacking them might change their views. A mall, on the other hand, would strike at the heart of capitalism (assuming that Wall Street is too hard of a target currently, that is, until such time as the terrorists have a viable bio or chem weapon).
Watch these events closely, and regardless of who is responsible, the terrorists are watching our response. If we randomly implement a variety of security measures, it will extend the planning timeline and just maybe, we will be successful overseas in removing funding, eliminating active terrorist participants (willing suicide bombers with the requisite knowledge of English), and interrupting their leadership to keep the terrorist organizations in disarray. The long-term goal is to change the opinions of the generation of people who think that what the terrorists are doing is OK.
Best regards to all.
I sure hope you don't live near me!! Bet that got a lot of attention when the punks put it in your yard! Wow!!!
- 1 plastic 2-liter bottle with cap
- crushed up dry ice
- water
Directions: Put dry ice in bottle, add a small amount of water, and screw the cap back on.
Set on the ground. Step back and wait until the expanding gas ruptures the plastic bottle with a loud "bang".
This is a kids' prank that's been going on for at least 20 years or so. There are a lot of kids at college, and it's a new semester.
Don't be too quick to presume the worst. Hopefully, it's just a college prank.

My God, I've got a number of empty plastic bottles in the recycling bin in my garage! I hope nobody finds them and calls the bomb squad!
If this is the best terrorists can do, then I laugh in their faces. Good grief! A 10 year-old could make a bomb like this.
