Gun sales up since hurricanes (CA)

More people buying earthquake insurance and home alarm systems too

VICTORVILLE — All the attention focused on home protection after hurricanes Katrina and Rita has increased sales of guns, earthquake insurance and home alarm systems locally.

People are looking for ways to protect themselves in the event of a disaster in the Victor Valley.

Lock Stock and Barrel manager Gabe Antravious said he attributes about 50 percent of their gun sales since Hurricane Katrina to customers worried about a disaster. A month and a half later, customers are still arming themselves.

"Most people buy one shotgun and a handgun," Antravious said. "If someone breaks into the house, all most people need is to hear the cocking of a shotgun and they're shaking out of there."

"They're arming themselves up," he said.

The hurricanes "spooked" people but sales have leveled off some, said Troy Kuhns, employee of the Hesperia Pawn Shop. Like any disaster, people are "freaked out" for a month then after, they forget about it.

Home security systems sales are also up in response to the disasters, said Charlie Schantz of Alarm King in Hesperia.

Allstate Insurance agent Richard Gonzalez said customers are coming in to update their homeowner's insurance policies and he is selling more earthquake insurance since the hurricanes.

Items like five-gallon water containers, water purification tablets, battery operated radios, two-way radios and first aid kits are also in demand by residents concerned about the possibility of a disaster, said Wal-Mart's Michael Butler.

Hmmmm.... Yeah, I'd better go out and buy some more guns. (Like I need an excuse.)

"Most people buy one shotgun and a handgun,"

My home protection, but I'm adding another handgun.

I would buy a motorcycle (preferably one that is a combo touring bike and dirt bike) and a 5 gallon can of gasoline.

Getting out of town in traffic seems to be the issue.

This is quite a phenomenon since all the footege of the looters in NO ran endlessly on the MSM.

My niece and nephew in Florida, boomer peaceniks, went out and bought their first guns last month, and have been down at the firing range learning how to use them. They are well-off, and have a lot of property to protect. Never thought I'd see the day that they would arm themselves.

MSM are probably sorry now that they showed the chaos in New Orleans 24/7 for two weeks. It opened a lot of eyes of former no-gun people.

They'll never put that genie back in the bottle.

ps: Show me a man who can take 10 .22's to the head and kick my A## and you will have shown me a god.

But again, I want a bigger gun. The .357 was too much so I sold it.

If you are referring to using a bike to avoid the Houston traffic problems your money would be better spent somewhere else.

Bikers could me a little more progress, but the traffic was so bad they were also stuck. Open doors and freaked out motorists made 'riding the line' impossible. If you tried to go down the median you were stopped by police and ordered back on the road.

Have you looked at a Ruger P89? With the combat grips it is a very comfortable fit in my little hands and doesn't have much of a "kick" at all.AWB

Bummer, you could have shot light 38 reloads and worked yourself up. I have a 38 and almost never shoot heavy loads, to damn expensive. But I keep it loaded with and keep a few speed loaders with heavy serrated jacketed hollow points next to it.
