More people buying earthquake insurance and home alarm systems too
VICTORVILLE — All the attention focused on home protection after hurricanes Katrina and Rita has increased sales of guns, earthquake insurance and home alarm systems locally.
People are looking for ways to protect themselves in the event of a disaster in the Victor Valley.
Lock Stock and Barrel manager Gabe Antravious said he attributes about 50 percent of their gun sales since Hurricane Katrina to customers worried about a disaster. A month and a half later, customers are still arming themselves.
"Most people buy one shotgun and a handgun," Antravious said. "If someone breaks into the house, all most people need is to hear the cocking of a shotgun and they're shaking out of there."
"They're arming themselves up," he said.
The hurricanes "spooked" people but sales have leveled off some, said Troy Kuhns, employee of the Hesperia Pawn Shop. Like any disaster, people are "freaked out" for a month then after, they forget about it.
Home security systems sales are also up in response to the disasters, said Charlie Schantz of Alarm King in Hesperia.
Allstate Insurance agent Richard Gonzalez said customers are coming in to update their homeowner's insurance policies and he is selling more earthquake insurance since the hurricanes.
Items like five-gallon water containers, water purification tablets, battery operated radios, two-way radios and first aid kits are also in demand by residents concerned about the possibility of a disaster, said Wal-Mart's Michael Butler.

It won't be long before Wisconsin has a CCW law. That will leave only Nebraska, Illiniois and Kansas without a carry provision. Not that places like New York have a realistic law.

Pitty, the .357 shoots .38's and .357's. My Dan Wesson has interchangable barrels, so I can configure it long or short.
Shoulda kept it and shot mostly .38's for practice and kept the magnum loads serious work.

I was trying to keep the choices from getting too exotic. Not every town has an Aprilia dealer, but BMW and Harley parts are easy to come by.

I agree, for that reason, the Suzukis are also a good choice. Lots of dealers, but I understand that the V-Strom is more suited to the touring end of the scale so anyone looking for something with better dirt capabilites might want to look elsewhere.

There are a number of stories about people who were able to 'escape' in a rather relaxed state of mind using their aircraft.
I saw a TV interview of an older couple enjoying the empty beaches at Galveston and were planning to leave a few hours later in their Beachcraft. Stress free.
I like the P89 too. I bought a 40 round clip for it though. I call the clip, my 'Rodney King' clip.

Ain't it great? They are a result, initially, of the troops selling off the armories in the post breakup period when they were not getting paid reliably. The one I did not pick up but should have is a Nagant revolver. Came with holster and lanyard. It has a cylinder that moves forward as you pull the trigger to seal with the barrel in order make the revolver silenceable and looks to be straight out of an old Red Army Over-the-Top poster from WWI or so. It was on sale hereabouts in mint condition for $95 in the 90s.
The problem with that gun is the special ammo it requires. Folks who reload can use a more common cartridge, but the original Nagant ammo is unique - the bullet is recessed into the casing. You can get Russian yellow box "target" ammo for that, but it is too expensive for plinking.
What I would like is a TT-33.

The old saw is that a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. I think the post-Katrina coverage created virtual muggings for a lot of liberals.
