Good choice, other alternatives include Suzuki's V-Strom family, Aprilia's ETV 1000 Caponord, Ducati's Multistrada family, and the Triumph Tiger (did I miss any?). All of these combine touring and off road capabilities, yet each one approaches the split in their personalities differently. Some are more oriented towards the touring half of the equation, and some more towards the dirt, but all can do the job in a pinch.

I was trying to keep the choices from getting too exotic. Not every town has an Aprilia dealer, but BMW and Harley parts are easy to come by.
